DYK for Alien Blue

[edit]

On 11 August 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Alien Blue, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Alien Blue was the most popular Reddit app for iPhone and iPad at the time of its discontinuation? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Alien Blue. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Alien Blue), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Richard Drewett

[edit]

Hi. Thanks for choosing to review Richard Drewett. In order to work on it in the light of the tags you have added I should be most grateful if you would give examples from the article of what you consider to be its “promotional tone” as I am not quite sure what or who you think the article is promoting.

I am also not too certain about “overly detailed”.

Please expand on your criticisms if you have a moment.

Regards. Vortexionio (talk) 17:33, 1 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Vortexionio: I approved the article but I placed the promo tag because of the presence of what seemed like some overly fawning language in the article regarding the subject that doesn't read to me like a neutral encyclopaedia. The long quotes praising the subject and puffery words like "pioneering" and "respected" are not really words that we should be using from Wikipedia's voice; WP:WORDSTOWATCH is a good resource for things like this. Rather than long quotations it is usually better to paraphrase and summarise in our own words. For example, when the article references Drewett's "astonishing rigour" in booking guests, that quotation is not attributed to anyone and it's unclear who is calling him "astonishing"; it should be referenced from a more neutral POV in my opinion.
The detail tag was because of portions of the article that seemed to go overly into detail such as the bit about Parkinson's "ground rules". However on reflection, I've decided to remove that tag for now unless someone else restores it. StewdioMACK (talk) 17:51, 1 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. Thanks so much for your prompt response, which I have been studying. I accept on reflection that the long quotes are indeed inappropriate and as a consequence I shall set about removing them or paraphrasing and summarising them. I shall also delete words that are considered puffery, except those that are or can be attributed. Closer inspection, for instance, will show you that the "astonishing rigour" quotation was in fact always attributed. It is the POV of David Herman found in his August 2023 article "Parkinson: the heyday of Saturday night TV". Once I have cleaned up the promotional colour of the article I shall take the liberty of removing the promo tag. If any subsequent reviewer wants to reinstate it, then of course they are free to do so.
Thank you for dispensing with the detail tag; it will not be missed. Vortexionio (talk) 12:23, 2 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for working on those issues. I did see the citation on "astonishing rigour" but the issue was that it seemed like Wikipedia's writing voice was endorsing the viewpoint, which was my issue regarding WP:NPOV. The article looks to be improved quite a bit and it seems to be a quality article. Nice work. I've also linked to the article from Parkinson (TV series); feel free to link to it from any other articles that may be appropriate, per WP:MOSLINK.
