Helping out at the Teahouse
Hi, StudiesWorld. Thanks for helping out at the Teahouse. We appreciate your effort but I undid your last advice. Davidwr has been a Wikipedia editor since 2006 with almost 30,000 edits. He was asking for help dealing with a group of newcomers in a gentle way that wouldn't discourage their good faith efforts. He didn't need to be told to use talk pages or mark articles for deletion and might have felt offended.
And please don't go marking the pages he listed for deletion too quickly. That's considered biting newcomers. Explain notability and reliable sources. Helping them (and more experienced editors) is what the Teahouse is about. If the articles still don't meet policy in a week or two and after explaining what's needed, then you can begin nominating them for deletion (unless an article meet criteria for speedy deletion, especially blatant copyright violations, attack pages and such.

- Hi again. When dealing with Wiki-jargon, you can usually put WP: in front of it in the search box and get to a place that explains. RfA is Request for Adminship at WP:RFA, WP:BITE is a pretty good explanation; you obviously read it since you added the new user template so I doubt you will bite any newcomers.
- Becoming a WP:Wikipedian is a process. It takes time. We learn one thing as needed or when we just get curious. Try this: On your userpage or talkpage, click the "View history" tab. Look a few lines down from the top for "External tools:" and then on the far right, click on "Page view statistics". You, Davidwr and I looked at your page but so did others. Want to see how you're doing? In the far upper right of the screen, click on "Contributions" (or right-click and open in a new tab or window) and then scroll down to the bottom of that page. In the grayish box, click on "Edit count". Interesting graphic, isn't it? It will change as you work. You can learn more by clicking on the links that end "/OptIn.js" and then adding a space or something and saving the page. You can look at the same page of others by going to any of their pages, clicking the "User contributions" under Tools in the left-side navigation bar and clicking their Edit count.
- The criticism you'd get right now is that you haven't created WP:CONTENT, what Wikipedia is all about. I'm a bird geek but get sucked into other content creation. Since you are interested in science and space, you might be interested in creating articles that are missing. Wikipedia has a gender gap meaning that too few editors are female and there is a lack of articles on notable females. I got involved in WikiProject: Women scientists to help out. Now your challenge:
- Download and save to your hard drive http://www.nasa.gov/centers/goddard/pdf/613194main_WomenOfGoddard_book.pdf. Many of the people in that book deserve a Wikipedia article and exceed notability standards but aren't even mentioned in Wikipedia right now. Read over WP:BTIP and then choose a scientist/engineer from the NASA book. Check that she doesn't already have a Wikipedia article, Goggle her to find some more sources and then create a page in your sandbox. Look at my start at User:Doctree/sandbox/Beth_Brown for an example of a prototype article. Build your article in your sandbox until it's somewhat complete and see if it would meet the criteria for a WP:DYK. You'll learn a lot by creating an article and nominating it to be featured on the main page.
