Portal reviews

Thanks for your reviews of Portal: West Bengal. Being a totally non-technical person, I almost copied every aspect of the portal from some other ones. Now that I see the Kerala portal, I guess I have some better portal to copy from :) I'll try the automatic rotation thing. Also, the selected biography thing in WB is a non-democratic process. As you know, there is little participation in voting process etc even in portal:India, let alone portals like WB! However, this is an important aspect, and maybe we'll introduce some voting process. Thanks. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 19:37, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Zora (talk · contribs) made an amazingly bad-faith allegation about us here. For some reason we should write every bollywood bio in nastaliq script. She accused us of political ploy which (in our case) means "anti-Muslim ploys". Anyway, Malayali and Nagari (for Hindi movies she acts in) are the only two languages which even make sense.Bakaman Bakatalk 05:12, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

I made a suggestion to the users that they should try to find a urdu wiki article on Vidya Balan, and interwiki link it so that urdu readers can get even better treatment (an article they can read in their own language).Bakaman Bakatalk 17:01, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Malayalam films

Hi, Thanks for your invitation. I am generally interested in movie related articles. I noticed that most classic movies dont have a page. Even worse T.V. Chandran did not have a page. If we can have more people contributing to movies it would be great. I have started on Bhoothakkannadi, T.V.Chandran and Kathavasheshan. Anyway.. nice job you doing there. --Jaseerabubakar 14:52, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

kerala edit re: 'God's own country'

1. You said the edit is 'controversial'. On what basis?

2. You asked for discussion on Kerla talkpage. Why was there no discussion by user saravsk or you when you guys did your edits?

3. Tourism industry's slogan is irrelevant. 192.30.202.20 17:37, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Your edit was controversial, because your edit summaries contained little or no explanation as to why you are removing the sentence. The phrase "God's Own country" is not just a tourist promotion tag-line, but one that has been extensively in use even before the tourism boom. Even reputed television channels like CNN-IBN and NDTV use it regulary to refer to the state (as a mask for the word "Kerala"). When such be the popularity of the world, why do you term it as irrelavent? Kindly explain your point of view. Thank you for your time.--thunderboltz(Deepu) 15:05, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

First of all you are devalueing the word 'controversial' just because you didn't like the removal of something you like. It is questionable whether the phrase was used extensively in Kerala before the tourism dept hijacked it from elsewhere. Even if it was, it is not an original phrase anyway. Cnn-ibn and ndtv are just repeating the slogan the tourism dept has succeeded in popularizing. I would suggest more concentration is focused on substance than on catch phrases unless the catchphrases has some real relevance. And you didn't answer why your edits didn't need explanation. Not plain double standard, I hope. 192.30.202.20 15:41, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi Deepu, Do you know whether Sukumari is an aunt of Shobhana and Vineeth. --Agεθ020 (ΔTФC) 20:08, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Now I am searching for copyright information on using infomation, images released by the Government of India on their website, www.-.nic.in I found that the 60 year restrictions are for classified information and all other information in WWW.NIC.IN are in public domain. Check this out. What is your opinion.

http://www.ifla.org/IV/ifla71/papers/012e-Goswami_Dasgupta.pdf

"Almost all the government ministries, departments, subordinate offices and government funded autonomous organizations have their websites on the Internet created by the NIC (National Informatics Centre, India), (http://www.nic.in). The spheres of activity, plans and programmes of different ministries and departments are made public through their website."

Is this enough for information like that is used to copy images like the U.S military images by citing U.S public domain laws.

Thanking you

Chanakyathegreat 14:27, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

Added later:Certain information will not be released to the public. That is the copyrighted images etc. If they release it, it will be with mentioning it that it is copyrighted like http://www.indiannavy.nic.in/NewPfr06/index2.htm you can see that this page states Copyright Indian Navy © since 2005. So this is the only page that is copyrighted and the navy has copyright over these images and all other images are in public domain. And all other images released through government website are not copyrighted and is in the public domain. Am I right? Chanakyathegreat 14:51, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

WikiProject India Newsletter: Volume I, Issue 3 - December 2006

Project News
  • Name change of cities in Karnataka: A straw poll was conducted on the proposal to change the name of cities in Karnataka, per the Nov 1, 2006 decision by the Karnataka government to rename them from the current anglicised forms. The result of the poll was to change the names. As controversial as the decision may be in the real world, the article Bangalore in Wikipedia still reflects the old name. You may be interested in knowing why. Dig the archives.
  • New Project Noticeboard (Shortcut:WP:INB): WikiProject India now sports a new colourful centralised noticeboard. An effort to make the noticeboard current and dynamic was mooted a few days back, and Ganeshk came up with the new format. The new noticeboard will strive to be the one-stop shop for all project related information. The shortcut is WP:INB.
  • Members List: The old members list is being phased out to give way for the new members list. New members are requested to add their names to the new members list. As the newsletter grows, further issues of the Project Newsletter will be delivered to those enlisted in the new list. So dash down now, to check if ur name is in there.

question

Dear Mr Deepu Joeph,Im slightly confused regarding the difference between a portal site and a regular site.Example they have Portal:Star Wars and the regular Star Wars article. The portal page for each subject is different from the regular page. What's the difference between the two?

Thirichchu vanne!

Hi, Deepu! I see you're an admin now; congradulations! Good luck on your exams, too! I have an exam tomorrow and another the day after, but they're in Italian and Japanese (respectively), so they shouldn't be at all hard. :-P

I've started questioning the claim (again!) that there were no famines since Independence. I also added a vague synopsis for Piya Ka Ghar...oh! That reminds me! I should probably put up something from that article on the DYK page!

Finally, if you're interested, you should be able to access the transliteration search engine at http://66.69.213.75:22555/trans/trans.htm. Let me know if it STILL doesn't work; several people have (succesfully) tried it out...--Kuaichik 17:51, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Wow, I'm really honored! For now, my plans with translit search are to improve it and then expand it (gradually) to various other transliteration systems and then other languages.

At this point, it only works if the search term is a Mandarin Chinese term in Hanyu Pinyin. Maybe someday, I will make other versions for Hindustani (I've already started), Malayalam, etc. Indian languages are really a challenge, just because there are so many ways to transliterate something in an Indian language. Hindustani is even harder, though, because you also have two scripts to deal with...!

Anyway, I'll see what contributions I can make while I can. I have also been working on the Spanish Wikipedia a little, but no one there seems to have taken any notice yet :-P --Kuaichik 07:33, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Probability of article selection

The answer to both of your questions is yes. Most days, the value of ({{CURRENTDAY}}+31*{{CURRENTMONTH}}) mod X goes up by one until it would reach X, by when it jumps back to 0. So normally it just cycles around. When it is the first day of a new month following a month of 30 days, CURRENTDAY goes back by 29 while 31*CURRENTMONTH goes up by 31, so then the value skips 1 in the cycle. When going from 28 February to 1 March the value skips 3. So there are only five "hiccoughs" in a whole year, which should be negligeable, and even more so since the values skipped are usually different each time.  --LambiamTalk 21:37, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Lage Raho Munna Bhai Production

Hey, we desperately need some sources to fill in a production section and then we can submit it to WP:GAC and I think we should pass. I just need sources if you haven't got the time to fill things in, just a few sources and I'll manage. I think that after a thorough copyedit, it might be worth it to give it a peer review. Nobleeagle [TALK] [C] 05:25, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

I think you misunderstood, the current content is well sourced, but I need something to base a section on the Production of the film on. All Film FAs have a production section so this is essential. I only think we should try GA after such a section is made. I believe this definitely has the potential to be the first Hindi movie to make it to the main page. Aah. too bad. He was a very knowledgable guy and had done some very good edits in his different avatars. IMO, the good that he did was definitely more significant than the bad. Deepu, please don't reveal the names of his other incarnations :-) Tintin (talk) 16:14, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
I really cant believe you, Tintin! Good job, Sir Nick. Knowledgeable or not, he has given us enough and more headaches. He hasn't shown an inkling of a likeliness to turn around and edit constructively. Anyways, blocking his old socks isn't going to help. He rarely uses them again.--thunderboltz(Deepu) 06:39, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

Well, its not Tintin's fault really. He was brought up in the nation that exudes Gandhigiri; and there might be a thing or two Tintin's expecting. As dear ol' Dubya would sacrimoniously put it – You are either on our side, or theirs. There is no middle ground. On a serious note, I do not think it would be a problem if he got himself a legitimate account which is devoid of trolling; as we cannot have him run amok with multiple sockpuppets. Blocking and marking his sockpuppets would be a good thing to do, as we can gain communal consensus to block him permanently if he continues trolling. By the way, I have zeroed on two of his IP addresses; seems like the wise guy was using two ISPs to avoid getting caught and wikilawyer all his way.

Cheers, — Nearly Headless Nick {L} 09:52, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

Rather unusual that this one did not show Bangalore as the city of origin. I surmise use of meatpuppets and I am afraid he might set up the bomb anytime soon. — Nearly Headless Nick {C} {L} 13:20, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

question about vandal protection programs.

Hello Mr Joeseph it's Nadirali.I know I should be asking administrator daniel about this, but he seems to be unavailable most of the time. Maybe you might know.

I was under the impression that anti-vandal templates, such as vandalsniper would provide protection for my userpage from vandals.I'm not sure if that's the case still. I read on the programs page that the program comes seperate from the template but it sounds a bit confusing. Do you know if adding the template would automatically upload the program and protect your userpage?

I'll be very grateful if you can tell me anything you know about this.

All the best.

(PS congratulations on becoming an admnistrator)

Nadirali 04:32, 16 December 2006 (UTC)user:Nadirali

Thankyou for providing me the link to vandal protection.I have added the script of the program to my prefference page. However I must go through another procejur to be able to view it.I think I'll pass on the viewing for now.Although it does not fully guarantee 100% protection,it atleast gives me a better chance against vandals.I have also applied for vandalsniper(you need special permission to use that)Though vandalproof and vandalsniper give you the oppertunity to go "vandal hunting",I unfortunately won't have the time for that.My main concern is that my userpage stays safe from anyone randomly editing or vandalizing my it. I still plan on adding a template to my userpage in case anyone is tempted to mess around with it.I again thankyou for providing me the info for it. (goodluck with your exams!!!!) M.N.Sathyarthi

Hi, I have been using wikipedia for quite a long time but didn’t have the courage to edit till now. I was trying to go through the maze rules and discussions. Still I am not sure I will be doing the right thing. Please correct me if I make any mistake. I think wikipedia expects editors to be BOLD. I see that there is no article on M.N.Sathyarthi. he is a very important figure in Indian Freedom struggle and also in Malayalam literature. He accompanied Netaji to Afghanistan on his way to USSR. He has translated under the pen-name Chamanlal Asad; won the Sahitya Academy award for translation. So there can be an article on him, I suppose. The problem is that there are not many online materials on him. Is it okay if I can give some books as reference? You cannot verify by clicking at a link but can go to a library and verify. Is that okay with verifiability? User:SunilMS

I looked at your discussion page and was very disappointed to see what was going on . I feel that the energy of wikipedia administrators are being wasted on not so constructive thinks. All editors should stand united and do something about this soon. I am really saddened to see this. Perhaps you should improve your software to prevent this type of vandalism and attacks. Image:S11 AC.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:S11 AC.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Angr 17:16, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
