Bayern (horse) is now live. Still kind of rough, but we are 33 days to the Breeders' Cup, so figured it was time to get moving. We could hoist a pint from Bayern Brewing, Inc., though I know he was named after FC Bayern Munich. Still, the principle applies... I just got Main Sequence (horse) live. With all the recent retirements this year's BC has a "last man standing" look about it. Will certainly look at Bayern again. Heh, my hubby is the microbrew expert, I'm more of a red wine sort! But cheers! The BCC is going to be a 3-year-olds' race, Bayern, Tonalist, Shared Belief, "Chrome are all probably for sure entries. Baffert said in an interview during Game on Dude's retirement ceremony (same day as the Awesome Again stakes) that they'll be doing the Classic with Bayern. If Wicked Strong comes out from his mishap OK, I anticipate he'll be there too. VE Day a wild card, but I think the Travers was also a "win and you're in"... Mine's a Gin and Tonic (easy on the tonic}. I've filled out Bayern's racing career. He does seem the like the second coming of Game On Dude (Baffert has called him "the little Dude") in that if he is allowed a soft lead he is a monster, but if he's taken on early he's very vulnerable. And like the big dude, he won't be allowed a soft lead in the BCC. I don't see any of the top Euro's going for the BCC. Toast of New York looks like our best likely hope and he has been beaten fair & square by Shared Belief. I think we have the likely winners covered. Tigerboy1966  20:18, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

Any chance you can figure out who this horse is? File:Napravnik at Churchill Downs (11151454063).jpg what I know is that, obviously it is the #3 horse, it is being ridden by Rosie Napravnik and she's in the silks of Ken and Sarah Ramsey. It's at Churchill Downs and the uploader says it was taken June 16, 2013 (which was Sunday, Father's Day in the US). Equibase won't take me back to 2013, maybe you can use Racing Post...?? Thanks for getting the page started. When things like this happen, people tend to say "why is it always the good ones", forgetting that the good ones are the only ones that get the publicity. I wanted to get the article up to scratch quickly as it's important to note that he was a very good staying thoroughbred who ran in many top races before the sad events of Tuesday. btw if you can get more Oz sports editors to work on Horse racing articles it would be much appreciated: there isn't anything like the depth of coverage you get with European or American racing. Tigerboy1966  22:43, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014: The results

The 2014 WikiCup champion is Godot13 (submissions), who flew the flag of the Smithsonian Institution. This was Godot13's first WikiCup competition and, over the 10 months of the competition, he has produced (among other contributions) two featured lists and an incredible 292 featured pictures, including architectural photographs and scans of historical documents. Cwmhiraeth (submissions), 2012 and 2013 WikiCup champion, came in second, having written a large number of biology-related articles. Casliber (submissions), WikiCup finalist every year since 2010, finished in third.

There have been changes to to several of the points scores for various categories, and the addition of Peer Reviews for the first time. These will work in the same manner as Good Article Reviews, and all of the changes are summarised here.

Hello. I appreciate all your updates to the career records tables after the March basho. I was out of town and wasn't able to do my share. If you happen to have a chance to help, could you also change the "updated" date in the infobox as well. This used to be only for the infobox, but we came to realize that the infobox doesn't change as fast as other information in the article, so it was best to use the date listed there for the whole page. Betting is illegal in Dubai, so there are no official odds, but the British bookmakers do take bets on the races there and those are the odds I quoted. Three for the money

We appear to not yet have articles for the current leading Kentucky Derby contenders who have won GI races: Dortmund (horse) (Santa Anita Derby), Carpe Diem (horse) (Bluegrass Stakes) and maybe Frosted (horse) (Wood Memorial). Not sure what to think about Materiality (horse) in the Florida Derby, kind of a long shot win. El Kabeir (horse) and International Star won big preps but not GIs. But otherwise, want to throw up the basics? We already have American Pharoah up (however it's misspelled) Montanabw^(talk) 21:31, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

Thank you ever so! Yeah, I don't really "want" Dortmund to win (don't get me started on Big Brown...). I've always been rooting for the Ramseys, one of these years they have to hit that jackpot. I was also impressed with Carpe Diem in the Bluegrass. I suppose this means International Star and Carpe Diem are the two I'm most rooting for, though I also have sympathy for Zayat - three possibles and two dropping fast - If American Pharaoh holds together he will be formidable, though. We'll see how he does in Arkansas. But was it you who reminded me that the horses you "want" to win and the ones you bet on need to be two completely different things in terms of one's thinking? If so, then I have three "live longshots" to make things interesting (or at least a more profitable than usual show bet...): Bolo, Firing Line and, of course, Ocho Ocho Ocho (for the name if no other reason!) You're right about my betting philosophy: I haven't backed a horse in years apart from a fiver each way in the Grand National, because I always used to back the horse I wanted to win. We will get the full picture after the Arkansas Derby, but I do think you should take a look at Mubtaahij who will probably start at attractive odds cos as we all know "foreign horses can't win the Derby". Thanks so much. Harness racing in NA appeals to me as it is a bit like National Hunt racing in Britain: many of the best horses are owned and trained by relatively normal people rather than multi-billonaires. I also tried to improve Messenger Stakes, Matts Scooter and Precious Bunny. To be honest I don't know much about the sport and a lot of useful work could be done by an experienced editor who actually understands what's going on (HINT!). Tigerboy1966  20:09, 6 May 2015 (UTC)

Sounds good to me- I haven't done a GA in ages. Nice international perspective here [5] from Sam Walker who is not easily impressed TC hype. American Pharoah, Family 14

I'm admittedly outside my wheelhouse, editing on American Pharoah and equine pedigree, but have become curious how you know he's in Family 14 thanks to his fifth generation grandam Queen Zetta (see your first and originating edit). Do you know of an online database or reliable source we can cite for mtDNA? (I know about this page but can't quite see how APh's mare lineage connects to it.) Thank you for raising this. I was probably just lazy and looked him up on pq which is not RS. If you look at the equineline pedigree of APh's fifth dam Miami Mood [6] you can see that she was descended from a mare named Refugee III, but does not mention her dam Aliena (also the dam of the Irish Derby winner Land of Song) who is mentioned here. this page. Lots of sources such as this one [7] make the connection and there are all kinds of pedigree blogs supporting APh descent from Family 14 but none of them would probably be considered RS, so the reference to the horse being a member of that family should probably be removed for now. Tigerboy1966  19:09, 27 May 2015 (UTC)

Unless www.bloodlines.net fails as an RS source — which would mean a lot of other Wikipedia articles are currently wrong to link to it — I think I can write an explanatory footnote with good inferential sourcing. I didn't know much about him and thought I might be struggling for sources but the Cambridgeshire win obviously made a very big impact. I might add more to it as he sired quite a lot of other really good winners. I do like doing articles on "forgotten greats". I can't calculate a range block with only one IP. A check-user might be of more assistance, I dunno. Thanks so much. Admins are in Whac-A-Mole territory, I think and doing well. 2.125.172.76 was the latest and was "whaced" by User:EdJohnston today. A too-helpy helper...

Seemed to think we needed to bluelink Littleprincessemma so redirected it back to American Pharoah. Per FAC, a reviewer (rightly) pointed out that we needed to either unlink it or stub it, so I stubbed it. Was wondering if you'd be willing to trot (or maybe a relaxed canter, but no need for a gallop) over and sprinkle a little more pixie dust on it so it's not a one-sentence stub. I figured that the mare has produced two stakes winners now (the other being Xixixi, I think) so probably GNG enough. I wouldn't bust a move to make it happen, but just FYI that it's lurking there. I've added an infobox and a ref. We do have articles about horses who are notable as broodmares like Kind (horse), Somethingroyal and the Rubens mare, but those three all had more achievements than LPE. Will add more later. Tigerboy1966  06:06, 22 July 2015 (UTC)

new rikishi articles

Thanks for your addition of the two new rikishi articles. They look well-made to me and they are appreciated. Next time please refer to the criteria for whether or not to make a new article for rikishi. These criteria are listed on the sumo project page [[8]].

The reason for these criteria is that in the past people have made articles for up and coming rikishi (ones who just joined makuuchi or even juryo) only to have that rikishi soon drop back into obscurity. This is even though we have to keep updating their article information every tournament. This would be fine if there were more people involved in the sumo project but there are very few of us these days.

Also please update rikishi article info boxes when updating anything on their page (in or outside the info box).

Thanks for the advice. I will try to keep the two I started up to date. We have a similar issue at Horse Racing: a horse wins one big race, gets an article, and then does nothing else. You end up with an article left out of date, or very unbalanced. I am getting into the habit of updating the infoboxes and will try to be more consitent. Tigerboy1966  18:47, 27 July 2015 (UTC)

I read this [9]. This suggests that the link between A4 and 21 depends on the assumption that Malvina and the "Stirling mare" were the same horse, but that the stud records which would prove this are no longer extant. I think the sentence I put in the pedigree section of the article is a pretty fair, if terse summary, of the position: CC is definitely from A4 which is probably a branch of 21. Tbh a lot of the early stud records were pretty chaotic, and not just in America: see the artioles on Bend Or and Bloomsbury. I'm sorry, I know I don't explain my edits enough.
