Vancouver Nicknames

[edit]

Howdy, Tom! I believe that the only modification of your text at Vancouver, Washington I have made is removal of the "Vancouver B" joke, but if I'm mistaken on that I apologize. If you review the talk page for the article you will see that this article has already had some bad blood about nicknames, a little over a year ago. The current article lists a fairly limited number of nicknames, most of which are related to periodic moves to rename us as "Fort Vancouver" or somesuch, although "Vancouver USA" was prominent in the 1970's (there are photos of the entire city council wearing Vancouver USA t-shirts, for example) and the current mayor has promoted the "America's Vancouver" moniker fairly recently. There is less precedent for "The Couve" (recently featured in a Willamette Week feature on Vancouver) but some published support. If we have to go to providing WP:RS citations for nicknames yes, I would suggest going there.

Among the names which I have heard used for Vancouver are "Vancompton," "Portland's Tacoma," "Portland's New Jersey" and various other stepchild references, most of which are vaguely derogatory. Vantucky I have heard more than most, while my favorite is "the first Vancouver." The Vancouver A joke is simply unfunny, because it is inconsistent. Given that our Vancouver came first and that the other is Vancouver BC, "vancouver, eh?" is just a variant of the old "How do you spell Canada? C, eh? N, eh? D, eh?" saw, and not nearly as funny.

Without some significant weight behind such assertions of alternative names or jokes, I feel that such remarks (however witty) violate WP:NOR and basic notability guidelines, in keeping with WP:NOT.

My apologies if I seemed to mean, and I shall trust that you or someone else will remove the material again, for reasons similar to why I did so. Nothing personal was intended in the removal, although I did find it both irrelevant and unfunny. - Rorybowman 00:36, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
