Orphaned non-free media (Image:NasmithGandalfBalrog1.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:NasmithGandalfBalrog1.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 19:06, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: "Nazgûl" or similar-sounding names as real names in the real world: relevant?

[edit]

Dwarvish is based largely on the Hebrew language, so I've at least got reason to believe Nazgûl being based on Arabic or something else in the area is possible. Octane [improve me?] 18.03.08 1436 (UTC)

Philippine-American war first shots, William Grayson, etc.

[edit]

Hi.

You and I had an exchange recently in Talk:Philippine-American_War#First shots. I've been looking for more info on this, and have today stumbled across what looks like a good source. See the note mentioning the book America at War: The Philippines, 1898-1913 at User:Wtmitchell/Work1, and also this link.

I've just quickly glanced at a Manila street map, but the account given there seems to disagree with recent revisionism reported here.

Also, for some detailed info from sources other than Filipino historians writing long after the events, see the following two books (full text available online)

  • Halstead, Murat (1898), The Story of the Philippines and Our New Possessions, Including the Ladrones, Hawaii, Cuba and Porto Rico

Cheers. -- Boracay Bill (talk) 08:01, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi I've completely re-written the Literature section in the Treebeard article I need some reliable sources for the text in the that section only. I'll re-write the other sections and hopefully get it up to GA status.

(The Watcher in the Water article was also very well done. Thank you for the sources in that article.) LOTRrules (talk) 23:56, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

ME horses merge

[edit]

Hi Uthanc. The merge of the ME horses popped up on my watchlist. I was wondering, as it was one of the B-class articles (see Talk:List of Middle-earth horses), was there a reason for merging this? I'm worried that the list of animals might end up a bit long. Carcharoth (talk) 01:33, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:BakshiAragorn.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:BakshiAragorn.jpg. You've indicated that the image meets Wikipedia's criteria for non-free content, but there is no explanation of why it meets those criteria. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. If you have any questions, please post them at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions.

Thank you for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 19:02, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Middle earth prods

[edit]

What do you mean by "for now"? Judgesurreal777 (talk) 03:50, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

the only way to catch articles that were prodded and can be merged is to check prodsum yourself. Fortunately, looking every 3 days or so is sufficient. DGG (talk) 11:43, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Battles mergers

[edit]

What about merging Scouring of the Shire into your List of Middle-earth wars and battles, possibly renaming it to "List of Middle-earth conflicts"? I just don't know your intentions for that list. Súrendil (talk) 16:58, 14 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I started the list (sloppy job) because several conflicts (why didn't I think of that name?) - namely, War of the Dwarves and Orcs, Battle of the Crossings of Erui, Battle of the Camp, Kinslaying at Alqualondë and Kin-strife - all had their articles tagged for proposed deletion in quick succession (by Judgesurreal777, above). I feel certain articles may be easier to defend from deletion as parts of lists. Getting hold of references is the real problem. After I merged and redirected these, I thought the others might as well be too. A possible model is Wars in A Song of Ice and Fire. The War of the Ring battles may need their own page - something like User:Uthanc/Sandbox/Battles of the War of the Ring. Stuff also needs to be rewritten. Great job on Gondor. I'm unsure about the Scouring as it's really more than just the Battle of Bywater. Uthanc (talk) 09:30, 16 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

baggins edits

[edit]

Thanks for the 'heads up' - I personally find the infoboxes stupid and unnecessary - ie I wouldn't expect to see anything similar for other major works of fiction - but if concensus is to leave them in I will not remove any more.

Also I appreciate your edits to 'radagast' - it helps if middle ground can be found.87.102.86.73 (talk) 11:18, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Template:S-fic

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Template:S-fic, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

The template is no longer in use and its use is contrary to the MoS.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on [[Talk:Template:S-fic|the article's talk page]] explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Bazj (talk) 13:49, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Gollum1989graphicnovel.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

This is an automated notice by FairuseBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. --FairuseBot (talk) 04:00, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've replied on my talk page and left some comments at the WikiProject Middle-earth page. I will help out with the editing where I can, but I'm afraid I won't be able to help out much with the WikiProject organising stuff, apart from commenting here and there. Could you or someone else do that now? Well, when I say now, I mean I haven't done it for a while and you have, so would you be happy to keep on doing that? Obviously only as much as you have time to do - it's bound to me more than I would have time for, unfortunately. As for pinging other members, see how things go and if it's a bit slow I'll try and help with contacting various people. There was a lot of activity at Talk:Middle-earth canon in December, so maybe try there? Carcharoth (talk) 16:30, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Philippines

[edit]

The people are classified as "Pacific Islander". In the sense that I am also a Southeast Asian (Vietnamese), if they are in the general area of 'Southeast Asia' they wouldn't and/or shouldn't be considered 'Pacific Islanders'. But this isn't about the area of the Philippines, its about the location of the bloody war. And the war was in the Philippines, NOT SOUTHEAST ASIA. Dtlwarrior (talk) 05:56, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Manuel Quezon III requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. The article Minor battles in The Lord of the Rings has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This page doesn't really need to exist, it is nothing but a repository for minor points of plot in a book that has plenty of coverage already. There is no real world evidence given for the need for this article to exist.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Proposed blackout in protest of R.A.10175

[edit]

Dear Uthanc,

Greetings!

As a Filipino Wikipedian, I hope you are aware of the passage of Republic Act No. 10175, also known as the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, which was signed into law by President Benigno Aquino III on September 14, 2012. Currently, there is a discussion on the Tambayan, the noticeboard for Philippines-related topics, about a proposed blackout of the English Wikipedia in the Philippines in order to protest the passage of RA 10175, similar to the blackout against SOPA and PIPA held earlier this year. I feel that your input on the subject will definitely help in the discussion.

Please feel free to participate in the discussion at Wikipedia talk:Tambayan Philippines#The Cybercrime Prevention Act, and I hope your input will help the Filipino Wikipedia community determine which is the best course of action against this law. Similarly, we hope to get as much input from as many Wikipedians as possible.

Thank you and maraming salamat po!

Kind regards,
