Not me

Can you substantiate your edit summary here please. Are you confusing me with a previous user of this IP address possibly? It is, after all, from one of the largest public pools of IP addresses available in the UK. As such it seems likely that those wishing to harm Wikipedia may use it too, but if you check my edits, you will find them to be all honest, factual, improvements, with nothing disruptive or abusive added. 212.183.128.113 (talk) 11:01, 29 July 2013 (UTC)

Nope. I was referring to the IP that had been struck out, 212.183.128.159 (talk · contribs), which you then reverted. It has been blocked as an abuse of multiple accounts - ie, a sockpuppet. Any user may just delete those comments, but Martin only struck it out. Either way, per WP:BANBLOCKDIFF, it can be summarily removed without comment. VanIsaacWS Vexcontribs 11:11, 29 July 2013 (UTC)

Good enough? Useddenim (talk) 00:26, 9 August 2013 (UTC)

I love it, but I have no idea. All I know is that I was trying to implement Tri-Met and Link light rail into the template for use at {{Coast Starlight}}, when I realized that the images were non-free content. I am absolutely horrible at all that copyright stuff, and I have no idea whether or how a multi-use template should or could use non-free content under a fair use rationale. I guess I'm kind of conservative about those sorts of things, but if you think this is good, I'm going to do the same with Sound Transit, and see if we don't get away with it. Thanks for looking for a solution. VanIsaacWS Vexcontribs 00:32, 9 August 2013 (UTC)

Wikipedia Policy Copy Edits

I don't see how I changed the meaning of the page. Could you point it out to me?

-Duxwing — Preceding unsigned comment added by Duxwing (talkcontribs) 04:27, 10 August 2013 (UTC)

There was verbiage about not posting discussion to article pages, which ended up getting changed to say that you shouldn't post discussion to talk pages - exactly the opposite of what you should do. So while some of the change in wording may have had good purpose behind it, it was bound up with a bunch of stuff that ended up overturning longstanding practice. VanIsaacWS Vexcontribs 04:37, 10 August 2013 (UTC)

Quick note

Since we're talking on multiple template talk pages, I thought I'd drop you a quick general note. {{Amtrak Adirondack}}, in its current revision, represents what I think an Amtrak route template ought to look like. Cheers, Mackensen (talk) 01:55, 11 August 2013 (UTC)

Yeah, that looks really sparse to me, and seems ripe for relevant information to get added. You have a bunch of random transit icons, and no clue what they would possibly be. VanIsaacWS Vexcontribs 02:24, 11 August 2013 (UTC)
I would beg to differ; they're directly next to a wikilinked station article, which contains all the information a user might need. We don't need all the information to be everywhere, and de-duplication reduces the likelihood of outdated/inaccurate information. Mackensen (talk) 03:14, 11 August 2013 (UTC)
I disagree that information is only a click away. In the first place, you have to know where to click, which is basically impossible to tell unless you have a priori knowledge. There is no way to tell if stations are equivalent for connecting to ancillary services. Are the train connections at Poughkeepsie, Croton-on-Hudson, and Yonkers the same or semi-shared? How about the buses at Westport and Fort Edwards? Where does the Empire Corridor go? Does Yonkers also connect to the New York subway system, and there just isn't room for the subway icon? Taking a look at the much larger {{NE regional map}}, there's all kinds of information that is just plain obfuscated by the lack of information. I know that Alexandria, DC, and New Carrolton are all on the Washington Metro, but someone looking here would have no way of even guessing. I'm sure there's all kinds of information that's been kept from me - long-distance commuter bus lines, regional commuter services, all sorts of stuff, and I have no way of even starting to figure out where to find that information. Lastly, I really cannot imagine how there is much risk at all of outdated information - how often do public transportation systems stop connecting to each other? In the end, I view these as systems, and systems only really have meaning in relation to one another. I see stripping connecting information from these kinds of diagrams to be neutering what could be elucidating content. VanIsaacWS Vexcontribs 07:40, 11 August 2013 (UTC)
I took a stab at adding links and icons to {{Amtrak Adirondack}}. Anyone care to take it any further? Useddenim (talk) 13:41, 13 August 2013 (UTC)

Re this change, I'm not sure what it accomplished besides adding 6,301 characters and I don't know how much more parsing when loaded. (But then again, Wikipedia is woefully inadequate when it comes to documenting much of the “{{{…}}}” templating functions.) Useddenim (talk) 21:24, 14 August 2013 (UTC)

It allows you to override the default link and alt text (for accessible screen readers or text-only browsers), so that, for instance, you could have {{rail-interchange|us|amtrak|link=Coast Starlight|alt=Amtrak west coast service}} - Amtrak west coast service, which links to the Coast Starlight article, instead of Amtrak, and reads "Amtrak west coast service" to a blind user. Since there are no conditionals, I don't think it actually adds any processing overhead at all. VanIsaacWS Vexcontribs 19:09, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
I see. I just assumed that because link= and alt= were already piped that they could be overridden. Now all that's left is for someone to update the documentation. Useddenim (talk) 23:37, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

Hi Vanisaac. I see you removed "Switzerland" from this template, but the aim was to ensure the reference system was made clear i.e. it's the Swiss one, not the Amsterdam, Trieste one, etc.. Höhe is the only template that currently does this. It doesn't have to say "Switzerland", but is there a way to indicate the reference system?? Bermicourt (talk) 07:12, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

I don't know. The extra long reference was screwing up the layout of a bunch of Swiss rail line infobox diagrams, and there wasn't a country name associated with any of the other datums, so that seemed like the solution most consistent. Maybe the Swiss abreviation "000 m ü. M." / "-000 m ü. M." would be best. VanIsaacWS Vexcontribs 08:01, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

Moveable bridge

Just a brief note to say I agree with you. Sorry about changing your recent edit; I acted uncharacteristically impulsively when I did that, and had second thoughts soon afterward. If Wikipedia were written entirely in American English, drawbridge almost certainly would redirect to movable bridge (and so would "moveable bridge", the mainly British spelling of the term), and the current drawbridge article would be renamed to a title containing a parenthesized disambiguator. However, Wikipedia needs to accommodate all varieties of English, so the current wording at moveable bridge is OK. And your rephrasing improved it. SJ Morg (talk) 05:30, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

I only just now discovered your edit to the drawbridge (disambiguation) page. That was also very welcome. I wish I'd thought of that myself, but that disambiguation page is only eight months old, and I hadn't seen it until now. Thanks. SJ Morg (talk) 05:35, 20 September 2013 (UTC)
As a WP:Wikignome, I would have been extremely amiss to not check out all the related pages and make sure they all gibed with each other. I didn't revert you back until I had checked all those out and made sure that the whole system made at least some sort of sense. But thank you for your acknowledgement, and thanks for checking it out for yourself. Having people that examine their perspective and explore the issue is what makes this project work, in my opinion. ie in Braille articles

Hey, I've noticed you've been creating a lot of Braille articles lately--thanks for that. Just a minor question--I notice a lot of your articles use ie, as in, " ie /ai/". Is this part of the phonetics or other code, or is a misspelling of "i.e."? If the latter, don't forget the periods; also, you should probably use e.g. instead, since you seem to mean "for example" rather than "that is" (id est). In any case, thanks for all the work! -- Khazar2 (talk) 15:28, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

Having taken many years of Latin, I am well aware of the difference between "id est" and "exempli gratia", and my usage is correct. The unrounded, front, open-to-close diphthong description is limited to only /ai/. You will notice that "ie" contrasts with "such as" in these articles, and is used only when the phonetic set being described is closed, rather than open. As for the use of periods, I believe I use the suggested style from Robert Bringhurst's Elements of Typographic Style - no internal periods, and lose the end period when another punctuation immediately follows. Whether you wish to classify it under WP:ENGVAR or as a grammatical error subject to minor edit is, of course, your own choice, and I would not begrudge it being changed. thanks / assignment error

Thanks for the link. I started verifying our articles (Armenian, for example), and though I won't be able to do much until next week, I found an assignment error that I thought we'd fixed a long time ago. I can't find it in the coding to fix it now. In the Arabic article, we had {{Braille cell|type=image|?}} for one of the vowels, and it was supposed to display as 26, as in French. However, it displayed as 236, as in English. (I corrected the article here.) I worry that we may have other errors like this, and suggest that we not allow "?" as a cell input unless the language is specified. Or at least that we go through the transclusions and hard-code any instances to make sure they're as intended. — kwami (talk) 19:49, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

Braille patterns

Hi VanIsaac,

Re. articles like Braille pattern dots-23456, I added a lot of that info to Wiktionary last year at articles like wikt:⠾, so it might be a good idea to add a 'see also' or 'external link' like the one at right from this end and to check them against each other. I could easily have made mistakes, and none of the changes in the 3rd ed. of Unesco have been added. — kwami (talk) 21:42, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

Good idea. I'll set it up and run it through AWB later this weekend. VanIsaacWS Vexcontribs 23:37, 9 November 2013 (UTC)
Thanks BTW for the Unesco update. We now have articles (or at least a rd to a mention in a related article) for all languages listed, though several of them are still inadequately ref'd, and I didn't bother w the punctuation in a lot of cases. The the main form of the name for each rd has been cat'd, so all langs are now visible from the category, which is now linked from the nav box.
Oh, while you're at it w AWB, could you maybe put the articles in a subcat rather than directly under Category:Braille? — kwami (talk) 07:00, 10 November 2013 (UTC)

It is, quite frankly, ridiculous the number of these - over 700 with 1000+ requests in the last two weeks, but the page request histories look like it's human beings following a link somewhere, and not automatic processes that are making these requests - they build up to an early peak, and then taper off. So I don't really know what to do, but if they get requested, I figured the least we can do is try to get them where they seem to be going. VanIsaacWS Vexcontribs 00:40, 30 November 2013 (UTC)
