Managing a conflict of interest

[edit]

Information icon Hello, Varuasofsaurav. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places, or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic, and it is important when editing Wikipedia articles that such connections be completely transparent. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. In particular, we ask that you please:

  • avoid editing or creating articles related to you and your family, friends, school, company, club, or organization, as well as any competing companies' projects or products;
  • instead, you are encouraged to propose changes on the Talk pages of affected article(s) (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • when discussing affected articles, disclose your COI (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or to the website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Please take a few moments to read and review Wikipedia's policies regarding conflicts of interest, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing and autobiographies. Thank you. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 08:35, 22 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Notability for films and self promotion

[edit]

I've deleted the article you created in the mainspace. I had declined your article at AfC, as it did not pass WP:NFILM. If an article is declined at AfC it is a very bad idea to then try to create it in the mainspace, especially since you did not address the issues that caused the decline.

Here are the reasons why I declined the article and why I deleted the one you created in the mainspace:

The articles did not have any sort of coverage in independent and reliable sources that would pass WP:RS and establish notability - the notability being one of the key features. You sourced it to two websites, only one of which contained content, and a g-mail address. You cannot use an e-mail address as a source and it should not be on the article at all. Not only is this not a reliable source per Wikipedia's guidelines, but it also causes the article to seem promotional and also looks like you're exerting WP:OWNERSHIP over the page, neither of which are things you want on a Wikipedia entry. This might have been unintentional, but you still need to watch out for this. Of the only website that contained content, it looks to be a blog that did not mention the film offhand. Since it looks to be the website for the production company you formed for the film it's OK to list to a certain degree, but it cannot be used to back up anything in the article unless it specifically mentions the film. Even then it can only be used as a WP:PRIMARY source, which cannot show notability. Notability must absolutely be established in an article in order for it to pass NFILM. While I think it's admirable that teenagers are creating a film, this in itself does not mean that the film passes guidelines, nor is the film automatically notable because WP:ITEXISTS or will at some point in time.

I also note that the article contained a lot of information that is essentially unsourced. While none of it is particularly an issue (ie, no large and grandiose claims), this would all still need to be backed up by some sort of sourcing to be included. You can accomplish this via a primary source, but ideally you'll want a secondary source (newspapers, film review websites and the like) because at some point you still need to establish notability. One other note about the content - avoid terms like "innovative" since they're seen as very promotional on Wikipedia and you'll want to avoid that on here. This likely wasn't your intent, so just be careful about that.

I know that this might sound harsh and it isn't meant to be - I just want to explain why the page was declined and deleted. Ultimately it's extremely difficult to establish notability for films in general, but especially short independent films that are published online. It might end up that the film doesn't get any sort of coverage when it releases in September, so if this happens then don't feel discouraged. Very few film workers gain coverage for their work right away. Most of them won't get coverage until they're well into their career. What I recommend is that you look into working on a site like Wikia, where you can create your own wiki, as that site's rules are far looser than they are here.

I'm going to try to clean up the article some in order to make it fit the basic editing style on here. It doesn't mean that the article can be moved to the mainspace, but I did want to help give you an example of the writing and editing style on Wikipedia. You can continue to work on the AfC draft, however you should not move it to the mainspace before another, independent editor accepts it. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 09:13, 27 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
