WikiProject Eurovision Cup - April 2015

WikiProject Eurovision Cup EuroCup II Dear Project Member The winner of the first Project Eurovision Cup is Jjj1238, who achieved an outstanding 108 points. Androptrnt finished in second place with 30 points, and Moldova96 in third with 15 points. The second contest has begun, with participants from the first contest automatically registered. The EuroCup II will run from 1 April to 30 June, to allow people to get articles reviewed for GA or FA status. The aim of the competition is to help improve many of the articles within Project Eurovision that would have been otherwise left neglected, by carrying out as many objectives as possible. The more objectives you do, the more points you will earn. So have you got what it takes to be crowned winner of the next Project Eurovision Cup? Project members who wish to participate have until 18 April to sign up. The Project Cup judges, Wesley Mouse and CT Cooper, wish you all the best of luck.

Eurovision Cup

Not that I'm going to participate, but just a passing observation.. Some of the more time consuming tasks (GA, FA) don't seem to receive a fair number of points. I see that you've adjusted the points a little since the first Cup, but I think more can be done. Last Cup, dozens of stub articles were created. We don't need more stubs in the Project, we need more quality articles. Creating 6 articles with 3 sentences each is much easier than spending hours/days/weeks getting an article to FA. When I worked on GAs for this project, it sometimes took 2 months! The wait time for a review is easily weeks long. Just something to think about. Grk1011 (talk) 23:26, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

@Grk1011: I had noticed this too during the first cup; which is why I revised the cup period from monthly, to quarterly (3-months) - to allow time for GA and FA's to go through. And there is now a new bonus point scheme, in which if participants improve an article that is listed in the newsletter maintenance section, they gain an extra point. Obviously this is something new for the project, so teething issues will arise. Which over the first few competition, I hope we will be able to iron out those issues, and get a more fair contest in operation. Giving the stubs a lower score, should (and I emphasis on should) reduce the eagerness to create stubs, and concentrate more on improving the more neglected articles instead. Karin Park

Hi Wes, I have a question. So before Melodi Grand Prix 2015, I edited the Karin Park article quite a bit and updated it with new information. However, a user with the name "Karinpark" removed nearly all the information I added (even though it was sourced with reputable sources). I undid the revision saying something about "random undoing of sourced information" or whatever, but then today the same user removed exactly what they removed before. Normally if this was just any user I'd talk to them about it on their talk page but I'm not sure what to do because of their name. I'm not saying it's definitely Karin Park doing this (and it likely isn't) but just in case what should I do? { [ ( jjj 1238 ) ] } 14:08, 7 April 2015 (UTC)

We studied the various needs that WikiProjects have, and have come up with some ideas for our first round of WikiProject tool development. These include:

• An automatically updated WikiProject directory that surfaces WikiProject-related metrics and automatically generates a list of active participants and potential members;
• A lightweight, optional alternative to WikiProject banners, featuring an option to quickly send a message to the named WikiProjects;
• A tool that bootstraps WikiProjects; and
• A worklist generation script for WikiProjects

We are now looking for volunteer coders to work on these projects. If you are interested in developing these tools, or if you would to volunteer for other tasks, check out our new volunteers portal. Thank you for your help!

WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 3

Greetings! For this month's issue...

We have demos!

After a lengthy research and design process, we decided for WikiProject X to focus on two things:

• A WikiProject workflow that focuses on action items: discussions you can participate in and tasks you can perform to improve the encyclopedia; and
• An automatically updating WikiProject directory that gives you lists of users participating in the WikiProject and editing in that subject area.

We have a live demonstration of the new WikiProject workflow at WikiProject Women in Technology, a brand new WikiProject that was set up as an adjunct to a related edit-a-thon in Washington, DC. The goal is to surface action items for editors, and we intend on doing that through automatically updated working lists. We are looking into using SuggestBot to generate lists of outstanding tasks, and we are looking into additional options for automatic worklist generation. This takes the burden off of WikiProject editors to generate these worklists, though there is also a "requests" section for Wikipedians to make individual requests. (As of writing, these automated lists are not yet live, so you will see a blank space under "edit articles" on the demo WikiProject. Sorry about that!) I invite you to check out the WikiProject and leave feedback on WikiProject X's talk page.

Once the demo is sufficiently developed, we will be working on a limited deployment on our pilot WikiProjects. We have selected five for the first round of testing based on the highest potential for impact and will scale up from there.

While a re-designed WikiProject experience is much needed, that alone isn't enough. A WikiProject isn't any good if people have no way of discovering it. This is why we are also developing an automatically updated WikiProject directory. This directory will surface project-related metrics, including a count of active WikiProject participants and of active editors in that project's subject area. The purpose of these metrics is to highlight how active the WikiProject is at the given point of time, but also to highlight that project's potential for success. The directory is not yet live but there is a demonstration featuring a sampling of WikiProjects.

Each directory entry will link to a WikiProject description page which automatically list the active WikiProject participants and subject-area article editors. This allows Wikipedians to find each other based on the areas they are interested in, and this information can be used to revive a WikiProject, start a new one, or even for some other purpose. These description pages are not online yet, but they will use this template, if you want to get a feel of what they will look like.

We need volunteers!

WikiProject X is a huge undertaking, and we need volunteers to support our efforts, including testers and coders. Check out our volunteer portal and see what you can do to help us!

As an aside...

Wouldn't it be cool if lists of requested articles could not only be integrated directly with WikiProjects, but also shared between WikiProjects? Well, we got the crazy idea of having experimental software feature Flow deployed (on a totally experimental basis) on the new Article Request Workshop, which seeks to be a place where editors can "workshop" article ideas before they get created. It uses Flow because Flow allows, essentially, section-level categorization, and in the future will allow "sections" (known as "topics" within Flow) to be included across different pages. What this means is that you have a recommendation for a new article tagged by multiple WikiProjects, allowing for the recommendation to appear on lists for each WikiProject. This will facilitate inter-WikiProject collaboration and will help to reduce duplicated work. The Article Request Workshop is not entirely ready yet due to some bugs with Flow, but we hope to integrate it into our pilot WikiProjects at some point.

IP User

Hey Wes, this doesn't have much to do with Eurovision but I still need your advice. There's an IP User who's been changing Baltic people's birthdates from their respective countries to the Soviet Union, however this goes against the WikiProject's policies (I know in the cases of Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, etc. it should be the USSR but not for Latvians, Lithuanians, and Estonians). The IP User is User:123.140.222.64, they've been warned many times and their edits have been reverted but they continue to readd them. I reported the user at the incidents noticeboard a day or so ago but no one has responded. I was wondering what should I do, as I'm sure you've dealt with users like this before. Also, as a Baltic person myself I kinda find their edits to be especially offensive to me. { [ ( jjj 1238 ) ] } 14:03, 19 April 2015 (UTC)

Minor correction, it's two IP users with nearly identical IP addresses. The one I mentioned before and User:123.140.222.75. The one ending in 75 has been warned and reported. { [ ( jjj 1238 ) ] } 14:14, 19 April 2015 (UTC)

Ignore that, that user has just recently been blocked. But I do find it a bit fishy that as soon as one user is blocked, another with a nearly identical IP address begins doing the same edits the other was blocked for. { [ ( jjj 1238 ) ] } 14:16, 19 April 2015 (UTC)

@Jjj1238: they are what's commonly known as dynamic IP addresses and can be given a range block by an administrator. But they tend to air on caution with range blocks, as they could, in effect, cause registered users to be blocked too - especially if they do not have IP block exemption rights. Perhaps posting a polite note to the blocking admin about this other IP, will raise their awareness. Feel free to have a look at this archived thread, in which a range block effected myself from editing, as my IP address fell with the IP range that was blocked. Another Question

Hi Wes, sorry but I have another question lol. So I've been editing the page for the song "Ur Cool" and noticed that on the Finnish article of the song, the song's cover is on the page. I tried to use the image on the English wikipedia like I've done with various Eurovision singers but it didn't work and acted as if no image with the name has been uploaded. @Jjj1238: no worries, although the link they have used on Finnish Wikipedia as a source for the file belongs to a blogger website, which I'm sure is not allowed. Thankfully I found a more legitimate link from the official iTunes which makes it safer. @Jjj1238: there is an even bigger problem then. You've add the file to Busy Doin' Nothin' (Ace Wilder song), an article created in March 2014. However, there is also Busy Doin' Nothin' which was created in 2006. The article you used need to be redirected into the earlier version, and we will require an admin to do a history merge. As for the duplicate file upload; it should have flagged up a warning to you before saving the upload. Nina Sublatti

Hey Wes, I noticed that on Nina Sublatti's official website, the biography section is copied word for word from Sublatti's article on Wikipedia. I just wanted to point that out since Wikipedia isn't credited anywhere on the page and with that whole big than that happened between Wikipedia and ESCkaz awhile ago. I also noticed that some biographies on Eurovision.tv copy sentences exactly from the respective Wikipedia articles. { [ ( jjj 1238 ) ] } 18:33, 22 May 2015 (UTC)

@Jjj1238: This could be a complexed situation, as we're dealing with BLP issues. Trying to determine who created what first would be like the aged old question of what came first, the chicken or the egg. Sublatti's team could claim that they wrote it all first, and claim that we have copied their content. Ultimately we would need 200% water-tight proof that they copied from us in order to proceed that they be forced to re-write their website. @CT Cooper: Do you have any suggestions regarding this matter? Australia in Eurovision voting history

Hi Wes. I just saw that you reverted the change that I made to the voting history table in the Australia in the Eurovision Song Contest page. I'm not entirely sure why you did so, since the table was for the most votes given in the semis and final, so I believe that what I made was correct. @Sims2aholic8: I reverted your change, as you only shown the points Australia awarded in the second semi final. Australia awarded points in both semifinals, thus the table would reflect this. Thanks Wes, but as far as I can see, points from all the shows should be combined in that table, i.e. from both semi-finals AND the final. Therefore Sweden would have 24 points (12 from semi 2 and 12 from the final), Russia should have 20 points (10 from semi 1 and 10 from the final) and so on downwards. @Sims2aholic8: why would a table that is showing the most points given in a semi final, also included the points given from a final; when we have a separate table that breaks down the most points given in a final? Okay yeah I understand that, the table had been "Most points given in the semis and finals", but I see you have changed the table on the Australia page. I think all the other countries have the same table though, so perhaps we should open a discussion on what tables to include in that section. I believe the main point at the beginning for having two different tables was that originally there was one table for just points awarded in the final, therefore eliminating all the points received in the semi-finals. Therefore a second table arose to include points awarded in all shows, but if that is to change then it could be important to open up a discussion on it. From what I remember, @Sims2aholic8:, all of the articles had tables showing the following:

• A table with most points given in a semi final.
• A table with most points received in a semi final.
• A table with most points given in a final.
• A table with most points received in a final.

I hadn't even noticed that other tables had been re-titled to show a combined semi and final. Are all the others like this? And if so, who on earth changed them all without proposing the change to WT:ESC? Saying that though, I do remember Karlwhen went on a rampage of rolling out new table formats that he preferred, without discussing the proposals with the project first. Oh heck! All this confusion. This was why I was never a huge fan of these break down tables, as they were (and still are) the poisoned chalice of Project Eurovision. With exception to the big 5 and Australia (for now), all the other countries can award and receive points in the semi final; as well as award and receive points in the grand final. So every country (except the big 5 and Australia) will have 4 tables. The remainder who can only award points in a semi final, whilst award and receive points in a grand final, will have 3 tables. I totally agree, I was never very much in favour of these tables to begin with. I have no idea when the tables seemed to migrate from just semi-finals to semis and finals, or who made that change either. I had been operating under the assumption that this was the way we were doing this from now on, but there seems to be a lot of confusion on the subject. And yeah, what you described is the way I the tables are implemented at the moment: every country would have 4 tables, except the big 5 and Australia which would have 3 tables. So unless now we add another table with a combined ranking to resolve this, which would be 6 tables total (or 4 tables total for big 5), which I think would just be overkill. Once upon a time I had !voted in favour of having them removed and a blanket ban on them. To me personally, they require constant adding up. And if we do not monitor them religiously, then we would never know if they are accurately tallied up, without having to painstakingly re-tally them up whenever a vandal has altered them. Alas, my way of thinking was rejected and overturned, because at the time there was a website that could be used. But that website no longer exists. So I suppose that could mean the original idea of a blanket ban on them would in theory play more an advantage. Sims2aholic8 I would open up a debate on this issue at WT:ESC, but with all the other issues being plastered all over the place, and the accusations that have been thrown at me from non-project members these last 24 hours, stating that I am the "evil dictator of WikiProject Eurovision", is putting me off ever wanting to open up any type of debate at the project talk page ever again. Undone editing tables of Eurovision Song Contest 2015

Hello Wesley! I not understood why undo my edition. Sorry if my issue caused problems. I just suit the table according to the tables of previous years and had no intention to destroy or vandalize the page. Rather, I wanted to improve it and leave cleaner look and accessible to readers. I will not change again even not knowing the problem what actually happened. I look forward for your understanding, and I am willing to talk about it to find a solution. Thank you. Hello @Egtj:! The only reason I undid the edit, is because the dashes looked neater and as I have learnt in the past, prevents IP editors from attempting to vandalise and add points into "blank" sections. At least with the dashes indicating no points awarded will help us identify in future if a score has been incorrectly altered. Creating all the scoreboard tables for the 2015 article, was tiresome as I spent hours from 12 midnight until 6am UK time getting them all accurate. I intend to add dashes on all the scoretables across the rest of the Eurovision articles too, which I know will take even longer to get them all completed. Wes Mouse | ^T@lk 19:32, 24 May 2015 (UTC)

Mishela Rapo

Wes, I have another question. So I understand the whole Rebecca situation, but does the Mishela Rapo article that got deleted because she created it while she was blocked have to remain deleted? It was a good article that several other users including myself contributed too, and I don't believe it's very fair that it has to remain deleted just because Rebecca ruined it for all of us. It just recently got deleted again but I don't believe it was Rebecca recreating it and evading her ban, so I was wondering if it'd be ok to recreate the article myself as Rapo deserves to have her own article. { [ ( jjj 1238 ) ] } 11:21, 2 June 2015 (UTC)

Thanks Chris, for stepping in on this thread whilst I was having laptop issues. @Jjj1238:, the article was deleted first time around as RebeccaTheAwesomeXD had evaded her BLP ban by creating a BLP article under a sock account RebeccaTheMegaAwesome. She then evaded that block by re-creating the article again under the second sock June The Mega Wonderful. This was further confirmed, along with yet more block-evading sock accounts, which can be found at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/RebeccaTheAwesomeXD/Archive. How to create/edit maps?

@KingDriverFC: creating and editing maps is not an easy thing and if done incorrectly can be troublesome across many language Wikipedia's, as they are uploaded to commons. It took me many weeks/months of practice before I felt comfortable enough to work on maps without getting into difficulty. There are some guides within my talk page archives that may help - see here and here. I would recommend experimenting first and feeling comfortable with how the inkscape software works before attempting to upload newly created or editing maps. Please also remember when posting comments on talk pages that you sign then using ~~~~ before saving the comments. Wes Mouse | ^T@lk 16:36, 18 June 2015 (UTC)

@NeilN: I did provide explanation in my edit summaries, along with warnings and notes on the IP's talk page. However, with Twinkle when one clicks "vandal" or uses the rollback, then it does not allow an editor to provide an edit summary. That is why I also added additional notes to the article talk pages. Point 4 of WP:NOT3RR states reverting vandalism is exempt. Seeing as the IP was vandalising, after being told not to add original research/unsourced content on 2 occasions, then they are disruptively vandalising. Wes Mouse | ^T@lk 14:16, 23 June 2015 (UTC)

@Gianluca91: please ignore the warning. Looks like pending changes and Twinkle are not communicating with each other like they should be doing. The article itself is under pending changes protection, and there were a string of edits that had removed confirmed countries from the article. As I have pending changes reviewer rights, I had rejected those edits. I also have Twinkle rights, so I'm assuming because you made an edit whilst I had rejected the previous user's edits that it brought up your talk page and issued the warning in error.
