Notes to myself

Maps:

Israeli settlements are not "neighbourhoods"

[edit]

There is a reason why Israeli settlements in "Greater Jerusalem" don't have an inbox: they are contested, cheers Huldra (talk) 21:20, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm improving the articles by adding the "Infobox settlement" to make them more informative, consistent and visually appealing. Are you concerned with the word "Neighborhood"? It's not a mandatory part of the infobox. There is no attempt to make any political statement here. Whizkin (talk) 06:13, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
By calling them "Neighborhood", you are making a political statement. Please take it up on talk, eg Talk:Gilo, before you include it again, Huldra (talk) 23:24, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's why I said the word "Neighborhood" is not a mandatory part of the infobox. I'll recreate the infoboxes without anything that can be interpreted as a political statement. They are important for many reasons. For example, they create the "at a glance" section for mobile readers. Whizkin (talk) 05:28, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
But it is not only the word "Neighborhood" which is a problem! The map itself is. It presents the Israeli view; there is no difference between East- and West-Jerusalem. The pre-1967 border is not clearly marked. This is unacceptable.
Again, please start a discussion, (eg on Talk:Gilo, as that page has a lot of "watchers"), about this befor you make any more changes like this, Huldra (talk) 22:46, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction to contentious topics

[edit]

You have recently edited a page related to the Arab–Israeli conflict, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Additionally, you must be logged-in, have 500 edits and an account age of 30 days, and are not allowed to make more than 1 revert within 24 hours on a page within this topic.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Flags and templates

[edit]

Hi there! I see you are making a lot of edits that involve adding flags to biography articles. I wanted to let you know that flags generally shouldn't be used in infoboxes. In fact, nationality shouldn't be included at all when it can be inferred from birthplace. With that in mind, could you make some edits to your additions? Thanks, Nikkimaria (talk) 00:23, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for letting me know! I noticed there are many infoboxes that do have flags, and I emulated that, without being aware those were discouraged by the manual of style. I'll stop doing that from now on. I'll review previous edits, but this might take me a while . Whizkin (talk) 16:02, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
PS: Your note about nationality not being included when it can be inferred from birthplace—point taken. Whizkin (talk) 16:03, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
