User talk:Zamicol
October 2022
[edit]Hello, I'm Dudhhr. I wanted to let you know that I removed one or more external links you added to Radix because they seemed inappropriate for an encyclopedia. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page or take a look at our guidelines about links. Thank you. dudhhr talk contribs (he/they) 17:50, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
- In that case, I think this tool should be removed as well: https://baseconvert.com I submitted an edit request to it as well. Zamicol (talk) 18:10, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
You may request a change of username and unblock if you intend to make useful contributions instead of promoting your business or organization. To do this, first search Special:CentralAuth for available usernames that comply with the username policy. Once you have found an acceptable username, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}}
at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with your new username and replace the text "Your reason here" with your reasons to be unblocked. In your reasons, you must:
- Disclose any compensation you may receive for your contributions in accordance with the Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure requirement.
- Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked.
- Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
{{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}
at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your reason here" with the reasons you believe the block was an error, and publish the page. Alexf(talk) 23:21, 11 October 2022 (UTC)- rationale:
Zamicol (block log • active blocks • global blocks • contribs • deleted contribs • filter log • creation log • change block settings • unblock • checkuser (log))
Request reason:
The block reason is errant. I am not "a business, organisation, group, or web site". I am an individual. I am a software developer, and it has been our culture, since before the time I was born, to use a handle online. Zamicol is my name. Zamicol is my handle.
Accept reason:
See below. JBW (talk) 13:33, 21 November 2022 (UTC)
The problem is, zamicol is also the site you have been linking to, in violation of WP:COI and WP:EL. Do you understand why this is inappropriate? --Yamla (talk) 09:23, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
- To expect to be able to use the same handle on every website in the world on a planet with billions who use the internet is unreasonable. 331dot (talk) 09:25, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
- I now understand that Wikipedia is not the place for links like that. **I will never do it again.** Zamicol (talk) 22:36, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
- Which leaves the question of what you will edit about instead, and what you will change your username to. 331dot (talk) 09:45, 22 October 2022 (UTC)
- @Yamla, @Alexf please accept my most sincere, heartfelt apology. I understand that the link was inappropriate for Wikipedia.
- I hope my once-in-a-decade misstep is forgivable. Please unblock my account. Zamicol (talk) 16:38, 22 October 2022 (UTC)
- >"zamicol is also the site you have been linking"
- "Zamicol" is my personal site. It's me. I will never again link to it on Wikipedia. The tool convert.zamicol.com is just a radix conversion tool. I linked to this radix conversion tool on the radix conversion page, after seeing another tool one in the "Other links" section. I was then kindly informed by @Dudhhr that such links were not appropriate for Wikipedia, which I full heartedly agree. So I was going to remove the links that weren't appropriate for Wikipedia, but I was not given such opportunity as then someone else blocked my decade old account. After being informed, "Please don't link to tools you personally have been involved with", I promptly said, "Oh! My bad, sorry!" The rule makes sense and I find it an excellent rule. Please unblock my account. Zamicol (talk) 17:01, 22 October 2022 (UTC)

- Zamicol, don't keep repeatedly pinging the same editors. Doing so is more likely to annoy them than anything else, and that isn't likely to encourage them to be sympathetic to your requests. JBW (talk) 12:45, 21 November 2022 (UTC)
- Sorry, wasn't trying to be annoying. I think my "bump" wasn't actually pinging. I read in the block page that I needed to include four tildes and that that should work. I was unable to talk on anyone else page and didn't know how else to communicate. Zamicol (talk) 16:36, 21 November 2022 (UTC)

@Alexf: I have checked every one of Zamicol's edits before the block. Just one of those edits was linking to his own website. It looks to me as though at the time he genuinely didn't know that such a link wouldn't be regarded as acceptable, and he has now undertaken not to do the same again. I therefore think that the "spam" part of the spamusername block has been dealt with, and is no longer a problem. The username issue is perhaps not so straightforward. Personally, I wouldn't object to using Zamicol's nickname which he uses on numerous web sites (I have checked and confirmed that) just because he has a website which uses his nickname in its URL: I don't feel that constitues the account representing the website, rather than representing a person who uses the name for many purposes, incidentally including a website. However, I am aware that many, perhaps most, administrators take a stricter interpretation of the username policy than I do. Anyway, what do you say to agreeing to an unblock, with or without requiring a change of username? JBW (talk) 12:45, 21 November 2022 (UTC)
- @JBW Ok. Go ahead and unblock. -- Alexf(talk) 12:52, 21 November 2022 (UTC)
OK, I have unblocked your account. As you can see if you read my comments above, I have no objection to your username, but some other administrators might, so you could be blocked again. I hope that won't happen, but if you do need a change of username, then let me know and I'll do that for you. JBW (talk) 13:33, 21 November 2022 (UTC)
- As long as you do not spam your website of the same name, or any website, I don't have a problem with the unblock. If you have any questions on how Wikipedia works, please ask at the Tea House. -- Alexf(talk) 16:39, 21 November 2022 (UTC)
