Hurricane Beta (2005)

Hurricane Beta was one of the seven major hurricanes to form during the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season and the record breaking 14th hurricane (breaking the record set earlier that month by Hurricane Wilma). It struck an area prone to devastating hurricanes but caused relatively little impact. Despite this, eight people were killed by the storm. This article is one of the core articles for the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season series, thus improving this article to featured status is important. All thoughts and comments are welcome.   • Oppose for now. I'm glad to see this article has been improved, but at the moment, the prose needs work.
  • The wave spawned an area of low pressure that later developed into Tropical Storm Alpha the next day before weakening. - Too much detail for the lead.

  • 18:00 UTC on October 29–06:00 UTC on October 30 - Unspace the en dash.
  • At 12:00 UTC, Beta made landfall in central Nicaragua, with maximum sustained winds, of 105 mph (170 km/h). - Way too many commas.
  • Rapid weakening followed landfall, with the storm dissipating early the next morning. - "With" followed by "-ing" should be avoided.
  • As a tropical storm, Beta produced heavy rains over northern Panama, amounting up to 3 inches (76 mm), which caused several mudslides. - Remove "up".
  • Rains in Honduras totalled to 21.82 in (554 mm) and rains in Nicaragua amounted to 6.39 in (162 mm). → "Rain in Honduras totaled 21.82 in (554 mm) and 6.39 in (162 mm) in Nicaragua."
  • The cost to repair damages in Nicaragua was estimated at $2.1 million (2005 USD; $2.3 million 2008 USD). - Is this the damage total? There's a different between the actual damage and the cost of rebuilding.

  • On October 21, a westward moving tropical wave entered the Caribbean Sea. - "Westward moving" should have a hyphen.
  • Once in the southwestern Caribbean, the wave slowed down, and convection gradually redeveloped around it on October 25. - Remove "down" and "around it".
  • The next day, with continued organization, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) stated that a tropical depression could develop in the following day or two - Remove "with continued organization".
  • At around 18:00 UTC, the NHC determined that Tropical Depression Twenty-Six had developed about 105 miles (170 km) north of the north-central cost of Panama. - "North of the north" reads a bit oddly.
  • With favourable conditions for development, Beta was forecast to intensify into a hurricane before making landfall in central Nicaragua. - Why the British spelling here, but not elsewhere?
  • An increase in wind shear caused a minor disruption of the storms structure, briefly preventing strengthening. - "Storms" → "storm's".
  • Around 00:00 UTC on October 29, Beta passed very close, or over Providencia Island with winds of 70 mph (110 km/h), just below hurricane-status. - Why not just "passed near"?
  • As the pinhole eye became more pronounced - Redundant to the previous sentence.
  • Beta continued to intensify as convection continued to deepen around the 11.5 mi (18.5 km) wide eye,[12] and strengthened into a Category 2 hurricane with winds of 105 mph (170 km/h). - The subject of "and strengthened into" is unclear.
  • The sentence structure of the final paragraph in the storm history section is rather repetitive. "At X on October X, Beta..."
