Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Rennell Island/archive1
I'm nominating this article for featured article because firstly the island itself is noteworthy as is the second largest upraised coral atoll in the world with the largest lake in the Pacific. It is also a World Heritage Site with several endemic species. It is a Polynesian outlier and the only Polynesian culture in the Melanesian Solomon Island group with a unique language. It is also the foundation for the naming convention of Avaiki, which is common in Polynesian cultures. The island is the subject of numerous expeditions from USA, UK and Denmark and was instrumental in the Battle of Guadacanal during WW2.
Secondly because of all the articles within Solomon Islands, this is the only one that is as detailed and appears to be linked to numerous ancient texts for various disciplines of research. Furthermore the WW2 history of the entire Solomon Islands area, while comprehensive, still needs further detail to make it a 5 star article and the recognition of one of these articles will further publish the notability of WW2 history which would benefit military historians, the Solomons people and Wikipedia. Oppose As a WWII buff, I would love to see a Solomons Island article become featured, but as a featured article reviewer, I have to say that this is far from reaching FA standards at the moment. There are significant prose problems throughout (two typos in the second sentence of the article alone, ampersands used within the text, sentence fragments) as well as MOS issues (images sandwiching text, section headers in title case, latin names in plain text, ship names in plain text). More importantly, there is conflicting information within the article (the infobox says population 1,500 yet the lead says 3,000); the article as a whole is under-referenced (religions characterized as 'major' or 'minor' without a reference?); and many of the cited sources are altogether unpublished, while other published ones would not meet WP:RS either. This needs serious work on prose, sourcing, and images (four images from a single internet cafe?). Suggest you withdraw the FAC nomination, put at least a couple weeks' work into improving the sourcing and finding copyeditors, then take the article through peer review before renominating for FAC.
