- What do you mean by "delete ip address"? Everybody using the Internet has an ip address (but it changes for some). Wikipedia contributions by your ip address cannot be deleted on request or changed to User:Cherria2, if that is what you mean. PrimeHunter 01:34, 23 May 2007 (UTC)
(HelpMe) Chantix
[edit]A few months ago I took the prescription drug Chantix to stop smoking. I quit after 2 1/2 weeks and continued to take Chantix for 5 more weeks. Recently I have started having severe joint pain in my left shoulder and it has started to affect my right shoulder. I had a Cortisone injection and I am doing therapy 3 days a week. Has anyone else had this problem after taking this medication. My left shoulder is better but I still don't have a good range of motion in it. If it doesn't get better then my orthopedic physician will have to put me to sleep and manipulate it for me. Please, can someone help me?

Submitting a name of a person that has an entry of another person by the same name
[edit]I was trying to submit information for the comedian Ian Clark. There seems to be a professor Ian Clark already. What do I need to do? Do I need to make a new page? And how do I make a new page if the name is already used by Professor Ian Clark.

My question is can a user be blocked for violating WP:NOT? User:Soxrock is updating the scores of sports games after each point is scored, violating WP:NOT#PUBLISHER. - (Double edit conflict) I would recommend going through Dispute Resolution for this - it looks like Soxrock is a fairly established user, but by looking through his talk page it does appear he's had some issues with policy before. I do agree with what you are mentioning - constant updates like that are what cause us to have these bloody database lockdowns so often, which is why the policy is in place. If he starts to get really uncivil, then maybe bring it all the way to the Arbitration Committee, but I don't think that should be necessary. His edits appear to be in good faith, even if they are against policy, so I do not believe a block would be considered, even if requested. Good luck with that, and I hope this has helped. Added note to Magnus: I think the section in question is item 6 under PUBLISHER: "Wikipedia should not offer first-hand news reports on breaking stories. Wikipedia is not a primary source." Going crazy trying to set up an AfD

- Thank you. However, it shows somebody else as having fixed it, so apparently it's been fixed multiple times over. I don't think the template that shows up is sufficient for listing an article, and probably should be fixed (if only it were that easy). I've been reading around what Wikipedia is and is not, but still I haven't been able to find the answer.
Let's put it this way. A Fandom in particular becomes relatively big, and so it creates a term about it that could be considered "Fanon Material" to which most of the fans know about and turns out to be really popular. So, considering that there are sources with information about this Fanon Material, an well-done article could be build up, but what I wonder here is if Wikipedia allows this TYPE of articles.
I've seen some articles refering to themes related to Fandom, like:
So I wondered if an article about Fanon Material could be done, of course, following the rules of Wikipedia for making an article, but I wanted to have some opinion before attempting something that might be deleted because of rules.

- (via ec) In general, no, because it would be extremely hard to find reliable sources about fanon. For example, suppose it's considered fanon that Luke Skywalker's middle name is Erasmus. You'd need to find a reliable magazine, newspaper, book, etc. that says "while not explicitly mentioned in the films, most fans agree that Luke's middle name is Erasmus" or something along those lines. At which point you'd have enough for a mention in Luke's article. If you had a whole bunch of fanon "facts" that were all based off reliable sources, then yes I suppose you could pull off an article about it, but I don't think that's likely to happen. Or, to put it differently - yes you could, as long as you followed Wikipedia policies, but doing so would be (in my eyes) very difficult. Confusing Manifestation 05:08, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

- What is the referent of "they" in the second sentence? "Users" or "articles"? And "user" in the first sentence, is that a user of your site, or a user of Wikipedia? Your question does not make clear what you want to send from your site to Wikipedia: your users, or your articles? Or do you want to download Wikipedia articles to your site? Or do you want to direct Wikipedia users to your site? You mention two sites which both have articles and users, without making clear what you want to redirect to what. - Electricity meter#Electromechanical meters does not say why the aluminum disk is sometimes perforated. My guess would be to promote heat transfer from the disk to the surrounding air. The article says the electricity meter consumes about two watts to generate eddy currents in the disk which cause it to spin. If that power converts into heat in the disk, the disk will heat up. In an enclosed meter, perhaps a smooth disk would get too hot. You could try calling the company which made your meter and asking them. --Teratornis 15:21, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

- Try using Wikipedia's sister project Wiktionary, typing the meanings into the search box, and clicking on 'Search' (which will search the text of the definitions, rather than pressing Return or clicking on 'Go', which will search the titles). --ais523 10:46, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

- Will Computer engineering suffice? If so, just hand that article out. If not, and you need to write your own, first you must know what to write, and second you must choose a tool to write it. If you want to write your handout on a wiki, you might try Wikibooks or Wikiversity, or perhaps another wiki. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, so unless your handout meets the requirements for encyclopedic content (which seems doubtful, judging from the errors of grammar, case, and punctuation in your question), someone would probably delete your handout if you wrote it here. --Teratornis 15:09, 23 May 2007 (UTC)
i would recommend not using the word "nudge" when referencing the poke feature. msn messenger might step in and say something because they use a "nudge" function which is similar to a poke.

creating wikipedia pages from a database
[edit]I have been asked to investigate how to publish a database on gardens of the Czech Republic onto wikipedia. A database has already been created on the topic of Czech gardens and we are hoping that somehow this information could be directly transferred to wikipedia. There are hundreds of entries. Is there a way we can upload this database onto a wikipedia page/s? Or will we have to enter all the data individually?

Yeongjo of Joseon is listed as the twenty-first king of the Korean Joseon Dynasty. His successor according to the navigation table at the bottom of his article was Jeongjo of Joseon, but no number appears for him. His successor was Sunjo of Joseon, listed as the twenty-fourth. His successor Heonjong of Joseon is also listed as the twenty-fourth. I'm no mathematician but something doesn't add up. Can I use my wikipedia user space to write guides (read more in text)?
[edit]I love wikipedia, and I love the way I can edit something then see the differences in my edits. I also write game guides for games which I allow multiple games websites to use. Am I allowed to use my userspace as a temporary place to edit my guides, it is quite useful to have the history. - The MediaWiki software that powers Wikipedia stores a copy of every deleted article in its database, so everything we type here "clutters" the server whether it is visible or not. If you like editing on a wiki but your content does not meet Wikipedia's policies, look for another wiki. Search WikiIndex for "game". That finds lots of wikis, for example Encyclopedia Gamia. Gamers are one of the most wikified groups of people, so you should have no problem finding a wiki home. --Teratornis 17:37, 23 May 2007 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) There are several ways; if you use Unix or Linux then the diff command is overwhelmingly likely to be on your computer already, and even on Windows such tools can be downloaded freely in various ways, but this is straying offtopic for the Help Desk (try the Reference Desk). - You can link to basically any page on the Internet, in any format, like this:

converter. Depending on your skills, you might be able to write a script with Perl, PHP, or Python, etc., which would run periodically and automatically update a wiki page with content from the spreadsheet. [edit]I'd like to request a deletion of the image found at the article for chastity cage, it's an image of a penis in a clear plastic cage. At the very least, there should be a warning and a place to click to view the image if desired.. this image caught me off my guard and disgusted me. Sorry, I tried searching how to flag an image but couldn't find it.

How do i add a caption to a picture
[edit]I would like to add a caption to a picture and i am unaware of how to do it.
- Make it a thumb by using the following syntax:
[[File:Bad Title Example.png|thumb|Image caption]]
- Which gives the image on the right.
- You can also use other parameters, like size and alignment, by adding them to the mix:
[[File:Bad Title Example.png|thumb|right|100px|Image caption]]
- Which gives the second image on the right.

Recreating images and Wikipedia policy
[edit]Okay, so I've noticed a few images that are logos of organisations, and they're all tagged with {{ShouldBeSVG}} or something along those lines; if I was to recreate them as SVGs what would the licensing be? Is it the same as with the flags on Wikipedia, in that they're considered my work as I've recreated them and as such can be released in to the public domain, or would it still need a Fair Use tag and rationale? - Good question... To be completely technical, since an SVG allows for infinite resolution, and since we're supposed to use low resolution for all fair use images, we're really not supposed to be converting logos. There's been a lot of discussion about this at Wikipedia talk:Logos and Template talk:ShouldBeSVG, so you might want to join in the discussion there before you spend time converting these images... tiZom(2¢) 19:50, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

- Ah, okay, thank you. Neither law nor bureaucracy are my strong points so I'll probably stay out of the discussion. :P What should the articles be tagged with instead? - {{ShouldBeSVG}} is for those images that you know would be better rendered in the SVG format (logos, graphs, etc.). Likewise the {{ShouldBePNG}} template is for those images that should be rendered in PNG, but could not be done in SVG (most photos, etc.). The {{badJPEG}} and {{badGIF}} should be used when you're unsure of which format might be best.
- As an aside, even if you don't participate in those discussions, do keep track of them. SVG hasn't really caught on that well, so we're always in need of artists/coders/tracers, and if the conversation sways in our direction, there would be a lot of SVG logos to create. tiZom(2¢) 00:46, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

Edit Count Tool Failing

- If their user pages are all on your watchlist then you can click on the link on your watchlist at the top that says "display and edit the complete list". Near the bottom of that page it will list all the user pages in alphabetical order. Dismas|(talk) 20:41, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

Image help

- Yes, so the image cannot be used in Wikipedia - do not upload it. Wikipedia images need to be licensed freely, and allow commercial use. The only other way to use the image would be fair use, but it won't qualify in my opinion.--Commander Keane 04:38, 25 May 2007 (UTC)
Semiprotection

- Accounts created within the last 4 days are also blocked. This prevents vandals from just creating accounts to get around semi-protection, but hopefully doesn't block too many legit users. You can ask for help on the talk page of the article and someone will probably add the image for you. NoSeptember 21:58, 23 May 2007 (UTC)
Doheny Jr. Murder/Suicide

The page on this is locked like a steel drum and I don't know how to correct some information that I have proof of. This case is still the only murder in Beverly Hills Police records that is open. Can you help me? How do I begin another page that connects to the locked page on this incident? I have read all the FAQ's and other instructions and I seem to be getting no where. Speed deletion of article
[edit]My article on CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) was deleted by an administrator called Finngall. The reason was "blatant advertising". The fact is CLIL is a methodological approach to the simultaneous learning of content and language. It is a priority in the Educational policy of the European Commission, and the European Centre of Modern Languages, depending on the Council of Europe, has made of it one of the strands for its medium and long-term projects call for proposals. Everything I wrote in the article was documented with the appropriated bibliography, part of which were publications supported by EU funded projects, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Comenius, etc. If the fact of talking about the advantages of implementing this methodology in European schools was what made the administrator suspicious, I would like to say that it was a summary of a research article called Think Tank 2006, carried out on occasion of the CLIL Conference in Helsinki in June 2006. The research was carried out on behalf of CIMO (Finland) and supported by a EU funded Leonardo da Vinci project called CLILCOM. I'm a novice in Wikipedia, so I don't really know if this is the right place to explain the reason why I'm asking for the restoration of the article, but please take into consideration my explanation and restore it, since it doesn't have to do with advertising, but with the results of academical research on the matter. - The administrator who deleted your article was Fang Aili. You need to start by discussing the issue with her on her talk page. If you cannot find resolution through that discussion, the next step would be Wikipedia:Deletion review. ~ BigrTex 23:16, 23 May 2007 (UTC)
- Finngall was the editor who proposed it for speedy deletion and used Template:Spam-warn on your talk page.[5] I haven't see the article but template messages have a standard text and may not fit a given page exactly. And in the meantime, while you are trying to figure out why your article was deleted from Wikipedia, you should look for another wiki more welcoming to your content, and try developing your article there. (One problem with these questions about deleted articles is that many Help desk volunteers are not Wikipedia administrators and thus we lack the ability to see deleted articles, so we cannot review the articles and tell how to edit them to comply with Wikipedia's policies.) If you develop your article on another wiki, then you can come back here and give us a link to it, so we can review it and tell you what it needs to be suitable for Wikipedia. Without actually seeing your article, I can only speculate as to the problem, but if you are personally (emotionally) invested in the topic you wrote about, you may have succumbed to the temptation to use promotional language rather than the appropriately detached encyclopedic tone. Again, I emphasize I am only guessing, but that is one possible explanation for the "blatant advertising" label applied by the other editor. In any case, since you are obviously new to Wikipedia, you haven't learned to navigate Wikipedia's incredibly complex policies and guidelines which tend to eat new users for lunch, so there are any number of editing faux pas you may have unwittingly committed (although strictly speaking, these would not be faux pas because the rules are in fact pretty thoroughly written; the problem for new users is finding and reading all the manuals that apply to what they want to do).
- Speaking of which, since you seemed to be involved in research about education, perhaps you would be interested in researching methods to train new Wikipedia users more efficiently than the current "method" - which evidently fell short for you. Currently, there is not much of a method for training new users; anybody can click an edit link and type whatever they want; in a disturbingly large percentage of cases, edits by new users get deleted.
- To find a suitable wiki for your article, see the List of wikis, and search WikiIndex. For example, I see an Education wiki on Wikia, and a whole category full of education-related wikis. In general, wikis that specialize in a particular topic area are not as persnickety about on-topic articles as Wikipedia is. Unlike many new users seem to expect, Wikipedia actually wants only a relatively small (but still absolutely large) subset of human knowledge. See: WP:NOT.
- Also note that Wikipedians are diverse, with some leaning more toward Deletionism and others toward Inclusionism. That is, some Wikipedians tend to delete articles that have problems, while others try to fix the problems and keep the articles if possible. A new user typically lacks the understanding of Wikipedia policies as necessary to placate the deletionists, or knowledge of how to find inclusionists who could help repair the problems in an article. --Teratornis 15:13, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

- Cherokee uses its own alphabet. "Trebuchet MS" should render the English text (including the instructions on the Unicode help page) correctly, but you will still have to find an appropriate font. Starting a new page
[edit]How do I create a new article? When I search the name, other articles come up, leaving me clueless as to how to start a new one.

- I think the poster means that they type what name they want for the article into the search box, which brings up a search rather than any way to create an article. One little hint is this - instead of pressing enter in the search box, click the "Go" button. That still brings up the search, but it includes a header with a link allowing you to create the page, for example Red link (don't create this page, of course).
