Citing a dataset of GIS information

[edit]

How would I go about making a proper CS1 style citation for GIS datasets such as these official government ones at [1] and [2]? - Floydian τ ¢ 00:42, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Floydian: I don't see any cite templates specific to this purpose. Existing usage seems to be mostly raw links or {{Cite web}}. I'd so something like:
  • {{cite web |author1=[[Ministry of Transportation of Ontario]] Geomatics Office |author2=Ontario Road Network |author3=Land Information Ontario |title=MTO Jurisdiction |url=https://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=05e1a205de3e499ebfc4e4c265c1d1b0 |website=[[ArcGIS.com]] |access-date=29 January 2021 |date=10 December 2020}}
producing:
  • Ministry of Transportation of Ontario Geomatics Office; Ontario Road Network; Land Information Ontario (10 December 2020). "MTO Jurisdiction". ArcGIS.com. Retrieved 29 January 2021.
—[AlanM1 (talk)]— 05:44, 29 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Cool, that will do! Just wanted to be sure there wasn't some special way to reference datasets. - Floydian τ ¢ 06:05, 29 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Cloris Leachman

[edit]

The entry under her death reads

Leachman was murdered on January 26, 2021, at her home in Encinitas, California by her daughter, Dinah, in her side. She was 94 years old.[33]

This is not true. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:643:8402:5FE0:B04E:61E3:2093:BF96 (talk) 01:14, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like Cloris Leachman has been fixed. RudolfRed (talk) 01:27, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Suggestion: Next time, put these types of comments on the article's talk page. Mrspagehttiwe2019 (talk) 11:13, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'm getting warned for nothing,

[edit]

Im not using my Wiki account and I'm getting email from Steve. M. I need these revered right now. Im spending time with my kids and you making me have to send you this email. This is unacceptable. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Slickyyy (talkcontribs) 01:41, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Steve M: Yes I don't disagree, from what I saw. The 'ping' was a courtesy as Slickyyy had started a discussion seemingly without notifying you. Eagleash (talk) 02:26, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Slickyyy: Your account is probably set to receive emails. On the non-mobile version of Wikipedia, click on "Preferences" at the top, and under the "User Profile" tab scroll down and you should see checkboxes under "Email Options." Uncheck whatever you don't want to receive emails for (so in your case, probably unchecking all is best). Hope this helps. Fredlesaltique (talk) 02:21, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Fredlesaltique: Slickyyy has received warnings at their talk page rather than actual eMails. Eagleash (talk) 02:26, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Eagleash: Ah, got it. Cheers. Fredlesaltique (talk) 02:41, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Slickyyy: Someone who is logged in as Slickyyy committed that vandalism. If it was not you, then you need to change your password. You might also want to discuss this with your children. -Arch dude (talk) 02:29, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Edits by your account can be seen on the "diff" links at Special:Contributions/Slickyyy. If it wasn't you then you probably left a computer logged in and your children did it. The warnings were correct. PrimeHunter (talk) 09:15, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I just want to email my partner, how do I send them

[edit]

I’ve got my partners tickets for the flight to England, I’ve got an email address,, help please — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lovesickpom (talkcontribs) 02:20, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Lovesickpom: This is Wikipedia help desk. We can't help with any other matters. RudolfRed (talk) 02:25, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Lovesickpom:. Are you aware that Covid-19 lockdown restrictions may result in your partner being quarantined for up to 14 days in a hotel after landing? At whose expense is currently under discussion. Airline carriers operating inbound flights into the UK may well require a certified negative Covid-19 test for all passengers within a couple of days or so before boarding the flight. The UK is currently under severe lockdown restriction. We have had 100,000 deaths due to rampant coronavirus infection, which is currently a major threat to public health and the NHS. Hotels, restaurants and pubs, and non-essential shops are closed for the foreseeable future. Unless your partner has a definite right to enter the UK, immigration laws may be enforced by the UK Border Force. This is not to be taken as legal advice, but I suggest you make yourself completely familiar with the current UK and Australian laws and restrictions before proceeding much further. MinorProphet (talk) 13:12, 29 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The above is valid, but also, you didn't send money to someone you've never met in another country, did you? Oh, dear...you may want to see about a refund as soon as possible. I think that's advice we can give. Britmax (talk) 14:22, 29 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

removal of templates

[edit]

Query regarding the removal of templates. Though the article on Ted Jenner (New Zealand writer) contains a number of verifiable references the template has still not been removed. I (Ted Jenner!)tried removing it myself last week to no avail. Does the remover have to be an authorized outsider, someone not Ted Jenner? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tedjenner (talkcontribs) 03:18, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Tedjenner: if you are the subject of the article, you should not edit the article directly at all, for this or any other reason. See WP:COI. Instead, make suggestions on the article's talk page. See {{edit request}}. -Arch dude (talk) 03:41, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Movie Master (2021 film) was entered twice in this table. How can a one movie listed twice in collection table? Rizosome (talk) 05:47, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If you see an error, another thing you can do is write so in the talk page of the article (just like you did here), or edit the article yourself if you know how it can be changed and you have a source. Cheers, Fredlesaltique (talk) 07:23, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Fredlesaltique Due to less popularity of that 2021 in film article, I approached here. Rizosome (talk) 09:13, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Can you be banned if you don't submit a profile in time?

[edit]

Hello, A wiki expert has said Wikipedia is threatening to ban a company for 5 years if they don't submit their profile ASAP. Is this real or a scare tactic so the expert doesn't have to refund for work not done?----Snazzy-d67 (talk) 12:26, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia does not have "profiles", it has articles. People who purport to be "wiki experts" likely have no official standing and cannot ban anyone from Wikipedia. It sounds to me like this company is being scammed by the "expert" and if I were them I would not hand over a penny. 331dot (talk) 10:25, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia includes articles on subjects deemed to be notable by Wikipedia's own standards - the subject itself is not asked for any input into that whatsoever. These decisions are not time bound as a company (or individual) could become notable at any point (i.e a subject that doesn't need a Wikipedia article today might have a 5,000 word one tomorrow) so that '5 years' claim is some bullshit. This 'expert' is a liar. --Paultalk11:31, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Whoever this "wiki expert" is, they are a scammer and are lying to you. Just ignore them. JIP | Talk 13:16, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Page Previews

[edit]

I've been wondering, how do you change the picture that appears in the page previews and on the results for the Search Bar? Mrspagehttiwe2019 (talk) 11:10, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Mrspagehttiwe2019 You don't describe your specific situation, but it sounds to me like you are talking about search engine results(like from Google); we have little control over Google search results; you will need to contact Google(or the search engine if different) for assistance. 331dot (talk) 11:12, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
My situation concerns the articles on the Eurovision Song Contest. I find it infuriating that they don't show the logo on an article for a contest of Eurovision preview when hovering over a link to said article. It instead shows a map of all the participating countries in said contest. I think it would be much better for the logo of the contest. The participation map also shows on the results page when searching for the article on the inbuilt Wikipedia search bar at the top of the page. I am not referring to the search bar for the search engine. --Mrspagehttiwe2019 (talk) 11:19, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
After looking around at Wikipedia, I have seen that many of the page previews fail to show pictures in infoboxes. --Mrspagehttiwe2019 (talk) 11:24, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I understand the situation. It has nothing to do with Google. It's when you hover over a wikilink, the image in the preview isn't the one used in the infobox. This is a technical problem that I think can only be fixed by the developer. Enjoyertalk 11:41, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It's not a bug. The software intentionally uses specific images and not ones necessarily in the infobox - pretty sure it picks one of the first four images based on some criteria. I'll see if I can find the page for you. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 11:44, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
This "criteria" results in some weird preview like the one Mrspagehttiwe2019 mentioned. Even if it's not a bug, it should be improved. Not a big problem, tho. Enjoyertalk 11:58, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I am assuming that you are referring to WP:Page Previews of course. I don't think it is covered there how it picks up the image Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 11:50, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Searching for Eurovision on mobile
For anyone else who was confused for a hot minute, there are images that come up when you search - but only on mobile, as screen-shotted (both browser and app it seems). Pretty similar to page previews but I would image they are different features in practice. It would seem that its looking for the first "image" using only the inline image code so it's skipping things in templates like the infobox. That makes sense to an extent - you wouldn't want it including the padlock from a protection template for instance - but I think I agree that the image in the infobox is probably the best choice in most cases. This is however, an issue with the Wikimedia software so as Enjoyer of World said, it would need to raised as a development ticket and probably take some time to even get accepted - but if you feel strongly about it then I would encourage you to raise it at the technical village pump who might have a better idea of whether it's worth taking further --Paultalk11:59, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
We have two preview features. The opt-in "Navigation popups" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets shows the logo for Eurovision Song Contest 1998. The question is about the default feature "page previews" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering. It shows the page image which is used in several places and is determined by mw:Extension:PageImages#Image choice. I'm not sure why it picks File:ESC 1998 Map.svg for Eurovision Song Contest 1998. It may be because File:ESC 1998 logo.png has a non-free license. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:27, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
From my experience, fair use images are not used in previews. I would assume this is because the fair use license states that the image will only be used on the specific page, not in previews or at other locations. I really think that's the long and short of the answer. Cheers ‡ Єl Cid of Valencia talk 13:24, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What is the limit for pinging members in ref desk?

[edit]

Here I pinged about 4 editors to get answer. Is there any limit? Rizosome (talk) 12:02, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Rizosome: The limit is 50 in the same edit. The edit must be signed. The page history shows you added the attempted pings in later edits after signing so none of the editors were actually pinged. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:15, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I should note, that you probably shouldn't ping 50 users. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 12:17, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

PrimeHunter now I signed again, will they get notified about pings? Rizosome (talk) 12:21, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Rizosome: 50 is the software limit. It should almost never be used in practice. The user mention has to be added in the same edit as the signature so [3] doesn't work. See more at mw:Manual:Echo. There are unclear rules if you edit existing content. The only safe way is to add a new post with mentions and a signature. At Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-echo you can enable "Successful mention" and "Failed mention" if you want to know whether your pings work. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:37, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

PrimeHunter I pinged them in the same edit as the signature. Will it work? This Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-echo confusing because of too many check boxes. Rizosome (talk) 13:43, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Rizosome: Click the circled i's at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-echo to see more about the option. I don't think [4] will work. As I said: "There are unclear rules if you edit existing content. The only safe way is to add a new post with mentions and a signature." PrimeHunter (talk) 13:55, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Dear editors,

The English company page of Nokian Tyres in Wikipedia is outdated on many accounts. Our current CEO is Jukka Moisio, and Bridgestone has not been our largest minority shareholder for a while now.

There are also other outdated references, for instance: CEO Kim Gran describes the Russian consumer as having a "love affair" with the Nokian brand citing that it stems from tyres which fits the local weather conditions and a genuine need in the market. -> We have had 3 CEO's since Kim Grahn, referencing his view as if he was still in charge does not seem relevant In 2009, the North American market accounted for over 10% of the company's net sales (figure is 12 years old) Nokian Tyres has a tyre subsidiary based in LaVergne, Tennessee (USA). In that market, Nokian Tyres sell only to independent dealers, some of whom use the tyre products to fill in gaps in their product lines instead of an exclusive or majority share. This results in some dealers being knowledgeable about specific tyres but not Nokian Tyre's full tyre product range.[45] -> Completely outdated, stems from an article from 2005

Those are just to name a few. There are several notifications of the need to update the page which have been made already on 2019. Here are some useful links, if you could kindly check them out and make edits accordingly: https://www.nokiantyres.com/company/investors/share/major-shareholders/ https://www.nokiantyres.com/company/newsroom/ https://www.nokiantyres.com/company/about-us/ https://www.nokiantyres.com/company/investors/financials/annual-reports/

I've fixed the formatting of your request and removed the edit request template, which is not for the Help Desk. To make an edit request for the article you mention, you should go to the article talk page, Talk:Nokian Tyres. You should first, however, review conflict of interest and paid editing for information on required formal disclosures you must make. You may also want to create an account so it is easier to make those declarations(though it is not required). 331dot (talk) 13:45, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What to do about citations for Communities, (ie LGBTQIA+) under-represented in "Legitimate" Sources

[edit]

I when looking up the proper format to cite for references when updating LGBT Articles particularly in re: Bisexual+ Topics, was distressed and stymied to find that History.com; The Medium; LiveJournal, some of HuffPo Queer et al seem to be frowned on. Given the undeniable issues that (1) there are just not THAT many Books or Articles by, for, about the Bi+ Community that are not Bizzaro Hogwash, Porn, or Hysterical Religious Tracts that are found in Mainstream Sources (2) the well-documented economic poverty of a Group, that itself is a Sub-group, of a still marginalized cultural group in much of the mainstream, so that disenfranchisement has forced them to turn to free/lowcost online media to publish. So now not sure what to do. CyntWorkStuff (talk) 21:38, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

CyntWorkStuff, if you haven't, try to ask this in a place like Wikipedia talk:WikiProject LGBT studies. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 22:38, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Gråbergs Gråa Sång, Thank you for that suggestion. I will try there also. In the meantime is it absolutely forbidden to use well sourced (ie original documents referenced in the articles) and by non-controversial authors, just because they were published on those platforms? CyntWorkStuff (talk) 23:30, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@CyntWorkStuff: I think the sections at WP:RS/SPS and WP:SPS may be of interest to you. I think it'll depend on each case, which sources exactly you're talking about and what you're trying to reference, etc, but per WP:SPS: Self-published expert sources may be considered reliable when produced by an established subject-matter expert, whose work in the relevant field has previously been published by reliable, independent publications. My understanding of that is that if the author is an 'expert' in the field, who has published work in reliable sources (books/journals) before, then if they write content for those sorts of websites you mentioned, then those individual sources could be used.
