Join us on August 20th at 12PM EST for The Archives Aren't Silent a presentation by artist and documentarian Tamika Galanis!

Event description

[edit]

Tamika Galanis will outline the process of the repatriation of the Bahamian materials from the Alan Lomax Collection at the Library of Congress and how the people in this 85-year-old collection were most instrumental in its return. The subsequent exhibit, Homecoming: Talking to the Dead, was on view at the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas from January to April of 2019.⠀

Afterwards, stay for a Wikipedia editing session with BLT! All skill levels welcome. This event is also supported by Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator and Miami Dade County. Organized by BLT proxy Kearra Amaya Gopee.⠀⠀

Tamika Galanis is a documentarian and multimedia visual artist. A Bahamian native, Tamika’s work examines the complexities of living in a place shrouded in tourism’s ideal during the age of climate concerns. Emphasizing the importance of Bahamian cultural identity for cultural preservation, Tamika documents aspects of Bahamian life not curated for tourist consumption to intervene in the historical archive. This work counters the widely held paradisiacal view of the Caribbean, the origins of which arose post-emancipation through a controlled, systematic visual framing and commodification of the tropics. Tamika’s photography-based-practice includes traditional documentary work and new media abstractions of written, oral, and archival histories.

All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required. A brief overview of the basics of Wikipedia editing will be given at the start of the edit-a-thon.

History of The Black Lunch Table

[edit]

The Black Lunch Table (BLT) is an ongoing collaboration between artists Jina Valentine (Fishantena (talk)) and Heather Hart (Heathart (talk)) which intends to fill holes in the documentation of contemporary art history. In its 13 year existence, the BLT has taken a variety of forms relating to this most recent iteration, in the form of the Wikipedia edit-a-thon. BLT’s aim is the production of discursive sites (at literal and metaphorical lunch tables), wherein cultural producers of color engage in critical dialogue on topics directly affecting our communities. They endeavor to create spaces, online and off, mirroring the activity and creativity present in sites where Blackness and Art are performed.
