The Miami Wikipedia Day Meetup occurred on January 15, 2011 at the cafe at Books and Books in South Beach at 12 Noon. Books and Books is located at 927 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, FL. Their phone number is 305-532-3222. 25°47′27″N 80°08′18″W / 25.790845°N 80.138317°W.
The Miami celebration is one of a number of Wikipedia 10 events being held worldwide, commemorating the founding of the project in 2001. The actual precise anniversary time is 2:27:13 PM EST, according to the UNIX-style timestamp on the earliest edit as found in a recently uncovered archive.
GroveGuy and Dtobias met at 12 Noon and had an interesting conversation over burgers and coffee. It was really busy at the Books and Books Cafe - every table was taken and there was a ten minute wait. GroveGuy provided nametags and we proudly displayed our affiliation with Wikipedia. Later, KillerChihuahua and a friend showed up at 2:45 and sat with GroveGuy until 4:30.
- I had a quesadilla, actually. I was there from about 12 to 1, then took a walk around the area, coming back to the place just in time for the official anniversary time of 2:27:13, at which time I didn't notice any WIkipedian-looking people, so I soon left and returned home. I had thought about going further south to reach an XKCD geohashpoint in Key Largo, but decided against it. *Dan T.* (talk) 03:12, 16 January 2011 (UTC)
- I came around 2 thinking it started at 2, I asked if there was any wikipedia related people to the waiter and he told me there was none and with the wait being 20 min, after checking on my phone and saw it started at 12 I thought I missed it and left. Secret account 23:26, 16 January 2011 (UTC)
- I came at about 2:15, as I had also had the 2:00 information - and had posted that I might be a little late due to the drive. I see now that the time was changed without any discussion that I can see on the 12th[1] - and there was no effort to notify anyone who said they were coming, which is to say the least very rude. Since I drove over 4 hours each way to get there, it was a considerable disappointment that the meetup had evidently changed times without anyone ensuring those who said they were coming had been informed, and I drove for over 9 hours and spent a night in Miami for basically nothing. Serious waste of my time, money and energy. Secret planned this, and no one even bothered to tell him the time had changed??? wtf??? You have to notify someone if you even mention them on ANI, let alone if they are going to travel, find parking, and supposedly meet with others. Fairly disgusted at this. - I might be a bit late - its a long drive. I will be there!!!! KillerChihuahua?!?Advice 14:19, 15 January 2011 (UTC)
- Pick a place! I vote for Books and Books cafe. GroveGuy (talk) 08:58, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
- The event is posted as meetup MIAMI. So let's respect the city that was chosen by keeping it at home. I highly doubt the wikipedians in NYC met in Jersey. Cheers! Eric Statzer (talk) 07:02, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
- Who doesn't LOVE Miami Beach (world's playground when I lived there - what memories!!!) in the winter? I vote for Books and Books too, 933 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, (305) 695 - 8898 (even though I love Wet Willies, although not much of a drinker). I have never been to B & B, but the menu seems to have something for everyone and the reviews are good, although they both have 4 out of 5 stars, which is as good as these reviews get. I don't like the bathroom facilities at W. W., so B & B cannot be worse, IMO; also, I have eaten at News Cafe. I like Wet Willie's food better. Bottom line: I have been to Wet Willie's and News Cafe. You cannot go wrong with Wet Willie's, but there seems to be more variety with the Books & Books Miami Beach menu - and it's more of an intellectual's place - and isn't that what we WIKIPEDIANS are, LOL? BTW, I LOVE Wikipedia - I have recommended it for years to my students (when Wikipedia was a young toddler). http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-cafe-at-books-and-books-miami-beach So let me just say:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, WIKIPEDIA!!! GREAT JOB, JIMMY!!! =D A big fan (I donated - a worthy cause)!!! =D DRJACOBB (talk) 16:26, 1 January 2011 (UTE)

Happy Birthday Wikipedia! Thanks a million for the best website on the net! I can not express how much Wikipedia has helped me. I am sure it will be a blast wherever you decide to have your party. We all know South Floridians know how to throw a party! I will do my best to make it, it just depends on my schedule for that day. Please don't be to disappointed if I don't show. ;) Denny B DenB (talk) 04:35, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
- *Dan T.* (talk) 00:32, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
- ...and I might even try to hit the XKCD Geohashing hashpoint in Key Largo afterward! Hashpoints in those parts almost always wind up in the ocean; by amazing luck this one hits solid land. *Dan T.* (talk) 01:38, 15 January 2011 (UTC)
Possibility
[edit]- I can't go, but wanted to let you all know that the Art Deco Weekend will be going on at the same time! So bust out your 40's gear.

- Jusdafax -
Quite tempted if time permits.Would prefer it to be moved a bit northward if possible, West Palm Beach would be fine. ;D Jusdafax 16:24, 15 December 2010 (UTC)
- Comment - Well, it looks like those asking for a shift a bit northward have lost out. How about a mid-afternoon time instead of noon? Speaking for myself, I am much more likely to attend if I don't have to wake up and start a long drive. Jusdafax 16:55, 7 January 2011 (UTC)
- I agree, West Palm would be a much better location for me as well. --nn123645 (talk) 00:15, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
- Aaron1a12 (talk) 15:44, 24 December 2010 (UTC) - I could only go if the meeting time where to change since I'm Jewish and I observe the Sabbath therefore I can't go on a Saturday. Could the meeting take place in Versailles? It's pretty famous café where lots of tourists go. They also serve good FOOD :)
News lounge in design district is a much better venue, Miami Beach gives me the consumerist creeps. I'd go wherever it ends up being though.
- Halofanatic333 Maybe.....Might bring a friend as well...Also depends where it's at. EDIT: Found out it's my aunt's birthday, and that B&B is about 42 minutes away....Halofanatic333 (talk) 13:12, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
- AlanDewey Small likelyhood I will be there. I also would prefer West Palm Beach area, if there is going to be enough people to make it worth it. AlanDewey (talk) 16:54, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
- hbueno Whoopi Goldberg confirms as well: http://booksandbooks.com/whoopi_goldberg
- At Coral Gables, not Miami Beach. Halofanatic333 (talk) 22:08, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
- Anonymous~Source (talk) 03:51, 9 January 2011 (UTC) Gotta see what's going on with the job.
