Wikipedia:WikiProject Climate change/Wikipedia:Meetup/DC/Climate at the National Academies Wikipedia Edit-a-thon
On Feb 21-22 2020, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) will be hosting an editathon in Washington, DC with a focus on climate change. Experts from NASEM will participate in the editathon, which will also be open to the public. Wikipedians Clayoquot, phoebe, and Sadads connected with a NASEM staff member at WikiConference North America and are working with them on a strategy for the content of the editathon.

Agenda
[edit]See Wikipedia:Meetup/DC/Climate at the National Academies Wikipedia Edit-a-thon
Priority themes
[edit]NASEM's top priority is to use the editathon to incorporate information from the following reports into Wikipedia:
- Negative Emissions Technologies and Reliable Sequestration: A Research Agenda (2019). This seems to be their top priority.
- Attribution of Extreme Weather Events in the Context of Climate Change (2016)
The IPCC's 2018 Global Warming of 1.5°C report is another excellent source to complement the above NASEM reports.
Things to do at the Feb NASEM editathon
[edit]- Add relevant NASEM reports as a source for appropriate statements to the articles identified below. Double check that information in the article matches what the NASEM reports state!
- choose an article from the list below and work on the lede section - does the lead briefly summarize the rest of the article? Does it have good grammar and is it readable?
- analyze articles by reading them carefully (or going through them in group discussion). Are there sections that don't make sense to you (as an expert or a layperson?) Are there parts that don't have citations or are outdated? Identify these and make notes to put on the talk page.
- Specific articles:
- work through carbon sequestration and carbon sink and "deduplicate" them by making sure they are not redundant, each article explains how the topic is different from the other, and improve sourcing
- We could have an article on Climate change mitigation research, outlining the major areas of current research, proposed research, how much has been invested (very little) and by who, points of view on how much should be invested and by whom, and the benefits of research. This would need a variety of sources in order to cover sustainable energy technologies in addition to NETs. We could devote some editathon time to brainstorming around what would be good sources for this article.
Very broad topics
[edit]Topic | Things to assess | Specific to-dos | sources / NAS report | Priority for improvement | av pageviews / enwp / day | wikidata QID | who is working on it |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Global warming | Assess current coverage of NETs in this article. Is it correct? Is the weight appropriate?
|
CO2 removal is described under the heading of Climate engineering, and should probably be reworded. The article seems to already cover extreme weather attribution fairly well. | NAS-Neg

Sustainable agriculture | Ensure carbon sequestration practices are covered well | NAS-Neg | 791 | ||||
Carbon sequestration | Needs thorough review, and better sourcing | Currently the article says tree-planting and forest restoration could sequester 160 - 205 GtCO2, whereas the NASEM report uses the range of 2.7 - 17.9 GtCO2. The article should include all the various estimates, and explain why the range is so large. | NAS-Neg | top? | 665 | ||
Carbon sink | Needs fact-checking. | A lot of content is redundant with Carbon sequestration and should be moved there or deleted. | NAS-Neg | 334 | |||
Carbon dioxide removal (Negative emissions technologies currently redirects here) | Should this page be merged with Carbon sequestration to make a single Carbon dioxide removal and sequestration page?
Does it make sense for one article to cover "artificial" methods and the other to cover "natural" methods? |
Also consider merging with CCS and climate change mitigation | NAS-Neg
IPCC 1.5 |
top? | 317 | ||
Climate engineering | This, and several other articles, classify all negative emissions technologies as "climate engineering". According to the NASEM report, this is an error that should be corrected. | NAS-Neg | top? | 431 | |||

Issues to discuss
[edit]Training should cover:
- Adding articles to a watchlist
- How to find page view statistics for articles
Breakout groups could look for common problems with climate change mitigation articles in Wikipedia:
- Stuff that's plain wrong
- Outdated or mediocre-quality sourcing
- Unnecessary mentions of company names
- Hype for unproven technologies
- Written for investors and hobbyists rather than the general public and policymakers
- For university professors: Best practices for having students write Wikipedia articles as assignments
- One of the ways experts can really help is in identifying where articles are wrong. We could have a group discussion to look through an article such as carbon sequestration and have people say what's in the article that jumps out at them as being possibly incorrect, unbalanced, trivial, outdated, etc. We could collect all that feedback on the Talk page, and then talk about how to go about removing and replacing content that already exists without feeling or looking like a vandal.
- This could be followed by breaking out into smaller groups to do a similar critical-analysis discussion of the articles around each NET. E.g. one group to discuss articles on agriculture, one on forestry, one on BCCS, etc.
Things to do before the editathon
[edit]This page is for discussing how information in these reports would fit into Wikipedia. For each report:
- Identify the relevant target articles
- Place notifications on the talk pages of affected articles to say they may be worked on during the edit-a-thon, and ask editors to identify issues that could use expert attention
- Prioritize target articles for maintenance, e.g. merging/splitting and spam removal, before the editathon
- Make a list of what technologies show up in what articles - prune and merge accordingly so there is less duplication
