The proposed WikiProject was not created; seems to have died on the vine

Description
[edit]The purpose of this project is to bring together and collectively improve articles on inventions, mostly but not exclusively computers and software, relating to Clive Sinclair. This includes several good articles that could be featured articles, most obviously ZX81 and ZX Spectrum, delisted GA/FA articles like Sinclair Research and 3D Monster Maze and articles approved on Citizendium such as Jet Set Willy. Elsewhere, articles should be improved for utility companies such as Hisoft, games manufacturers such as Ultimate Play The Game and Ocean Software and magazines such as Crash (magazine). Many relevant articles are still in start or C class, and need improved referencing. Some, such as Hisoft, makers of the widely used debugger Devpac, are not even created at present. - Edit : HiSoft Systems does in fact exist, but has no talk page and is not on any projects. --Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:33, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

- Why do you want to start a new group, instead of joining one of these existing groups?
- By my current estimates, there are around 1,000 articles that could be covered under this project in addition to the existing projects Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games and Wikipedia:WikiProject Computing. In practice, articles that would fit under this project are tagged with one or the other of those, sometimes mistakenly. For example, Talk:ZX Microdrive states it is part of Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games, but the ZX Microdrive isn't really anything to do with that subject. Since Clive Sinclair was more an inventor than anything else, it stands to reason some of his inventions that deserve articles wouldn't fit into these two projects. For instance, Sinclair C5, which I would imagine many people interested in ZX81 and ZX Spectrum would also be interested in, is understandably grouped with Wikipedia:WikiProject Automobiles.
Support
[edit]Also, specify whether or not you would join the project.
- As proposer. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 11:22, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- -- Trevj (talk) Yes, I think this is a good idea. However, as more of a BBC Micro kid, I doubt I'd actually join! -- Trevj (talk) 12:09, 15 January 2013 (UTC) OK - maybe I'll consider joining, based on this edit. I could probably contribute somewhere, and it could be instructive in terms of how best to progress the RISC OS WikiProject. I'll have a think. -- Trevj (talk) 14:16, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- I can see this project could work if there's enough active members involved with it. Though i would not be part of the project myself. GamerPro64 19:51, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- I agree with the reasoning behind the proposal, and would join such a group - my editing history shows that I have a considerable interest in most of Uncle Clive's products and past. Even if not a storming success, such a project would be good to group together related items, as Ritchie suggests, and raise the overall standard of articles - ZX Spectrum has many active editors, but lesser known articles, such as ZX Interface 2 has far less - this could bring awareness to the lesser articles. Oppose
[edit]Neutral
[edit]- Neutral I think this would work better as a taskforce of WP:COMPUTING (or a shared TF between WP:COMP and WP:VIDEOGAMES) -- 76.65.128.43 (talk) 02:38, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Discussion
[edit]- The VG/COMP ambiguity is understood, and we have a similar issue with WP:RISCOS articles. The proposed WikiProject Sinclair could maybe operate as a task force with WP:COMP, which is (I think) how WP:RISCOS works. Video games can
bealso remain tagged to the general VG project, hardware can be WP:COMP but linked to WikiProject Sinclair. I expect that the issue of numbers of participants will be raised by others, but I don't think this is a valid reason for not establishing a Project and system will facilitate useful linking of related articles. And in any case, there must be more Speccy fans than Archimedes ones! Cheers. -- Trevj (talk) 12:09, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- I think the number of "fans" is a bit of a red herring. The real motiviation for me creating this project is noticing a lot of articles are sub-standard and can be improved with reliable sources pretty straightforwardly. World of Spectrum has done a great job already about making a lot of the newspaper and magazine coverage for the early to mid 80s online and searchable. It just needs somewhere to gather together people to do the grunt work. --Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 13:29, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
- Understood, and I'm certainly not promoting fancruft! -- Trevj (talk) 14:06, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

- Comment There's been no opposition to this, although admittedly not a great deal of support either. I suggest it could be closed as being created (after establishing that the nominator is prepared to work on setting up the necessary bits and pieces). Getting such things up and running as a central resource for interested editors should be a worthwhile starting point. -- Trevj (talk) 10:07, 21 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
