Description
[edit]I will say at the outset that I have no interest in working on such a project, but I am convinced we need one. This would be a project covering all aspects of tobacco - cigarettes and cigars, their history, classifications, brands and manufacturers, regulation, health effects, smoking paraphernalia, place in popular culture, etc. I think such a project, if made, will attract its own community. bd2412 T 20:38, 3 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]Please specify whether or not you would join the project.
- I have not benefited from a WikiProject before, but I'll join. ChyranandChloe (talk) 05:29, 8 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- As I mentioned above, the topic does not really fall within my interests, but I'll help out with the technical aspects of getting the project off the ground. bd2412 T 06:07, 8 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- I have some interest in the subject. Perhaps some degree of organization would help deal with some of the recurring difficulties on the topic. MastCell Talk 16:13, 8 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- There isn't such a project? --Vuo (talk) 18:45, 8 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Surprisingly, no - but if there was, wouldn't you already be a member? ;-) bd2412 T 19:02, 8 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Support. I wouldn't join – I've never written on it – but a perennial irritation to me is how poor so many of our tobacco articles are, as it's something I look up quite frequently. – iridescent 19:21, 8 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- The need is certainly there. I doubt whether I would join, though; I'm not a member of any project. Eubulides (talk) 23:30, 8 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Discussion
[edit]- Oppose While I think it's great that several wikipedians have stated that there is a need for such a wikiproject, I would not currently support this proposal with so many people saying that they wouldn't join it. We don't need any "ghost wikiprojects" with no members. Find the interest first, get the membership. Say, 10 editors minimum? Then, let those editors create the wikiproject. But don't say that you think the project should be created but you're not willing to join it. Dr. Cash (talk) 15:34, 9 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Task force? I realize that this is a multidisciplinary field, but given the limited (so far) number of people able to actually join, have you considered starting it as a task force, perhaps under WP:HEALTH? Then if it fails, it's easily absorbed, but if it grows, it can be spun off as an independent group. WhatamIdoing (talk) 22:06, 11 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Well, given today's vote in the U.S. Senate to give the FDA regulatory authority over tobacco, Wikipedia:WikiProject Drug Policy would seem to be the best pick. My concern is that we also get good coverage of the companies and brands. bd2412 T 22:32, 11 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Oppose. The topic is too narrow to have a dedicated wiki project assigned to it.--Literaturegeek | T@1k? 21:41, 15 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
