Women Electronic Literature Writers Task Force

[edit]

Hello and welcome!

[edit]

This WikiProject taskforce is an inclusive initiative to create, update, and improve Wikimedia content pertaining to the lives of cis-gender and trans-gender women who are notable as scholars, activists, critics, and practitioners in electronic literature. It is part of Wikipedia:WikiProject Electronic literature.

Electronic literature is a broad field, more or less described as a work of literature that uses an electronic element (such as images, navigation, sound, games, art, virtual reality, social media, and on and on) as an integral part of the meaning. This is a broad definition, and we want to be inclusive.

How you can help

[edit]

This will be a multi year, multi person project. Our eventual goal is to document the biographies, works, journals, literary criticism, etc. for the women involved in this field. Our first baby steps are:

  • Let's create reviews of electronic literature: see https://literature.fandom.com/wiki/Special:AllPages
  • Add the list of 400 women we have already identified to wikidata with their metadata (birth, school, occupations, works, honors, etc.)
  • Gather and add a list of references about electronic literature writing to wikidata
  • Gather and add the list of works by these women to wikidata
  • Improve the entries for women already in wikipedia [[1]]
  • Write new Wikipedia entries about works of electronic literature with at least three reliable independent sources about each work. Then add pages about their authors.

It is a mammoth task. And a critical task. Electronic literature has grown with the advent of computers and sprawls across many genres (game, art, music, mysteries, criticism, non-fiction, poetry, novels, etc.). Please join our efforts--let's start eating the mammoth one bite at a time. Or taming the mammoth one edit at time--whichever metaphor you prefer.

If you paste the code shown in the squiggly brackets below near the top of the Talk page of articles about women e-lit authors or e-lit works by women, then the Talk page automatically goes into a category called . This helps us keep track of the articles that are in the scope of this project by marking the page as a) part of the Wikiproject Electronic literature and b) part of this task force.

Community events

[edit]

We host monthly events at 3 pm UTC where we work together on specific tasks. Note that these hour-long fests are only the beginning--getting our toes wet. If we get even a few images and references and wikidata entries, it is a start!

All are invited to contribute and join in our activities. There are many ways to help and no specialized knowledge of content or editing is required. Here is a page that will convert that to your timezone. If you would like to participate in these meetings contact LoveElectronicLiterature.

Status and Updates

[edit]

Edit a thon proposal for Wikipedia November Workshop 2023/Program/Submissions - WikiConference North America I am committing to go to Toronto November 10 -12 at my own expense to the WikiConference.  We have proposed an editathon to go over draft articles and why they were rejected so that we can address systemic issues and challenges in this field that has both emerging and obsolescent technology, nontraditional publishing methods, etc. on top of gender inequality in wikipedia. See our submission at https://wikiconference.org/wiki/Submissions:2023/ WP:WELW_Women_Electronic_Literature_Writers_Project_editathon_or_round_table

Draft Doc  We use an independent, non-Wikipedia drafting doc. We are nearing the million character limit! Lyle and I will work out some kinks here as when we copy the doc over, we lose the comments. So for right now, please continue to edit in the main doc. We are still concentrating right now on getting basic info on as many writers as we can (both from google searches and from mining good references). Thank you Annie and Claire for your work on Kate Hayles references! Contact LoveElectronicLiterature for the draft instructions.

Project Proposals We are developing project proposals and ways to include Wikipedia into university classes and independent work, so if you know of any professors in library and data management, translations and language, writing and research, etc. who need projects, please let us know.

ELO Conference Workshop  We will have a workshop in Wikipedia editing in Coimbra Portugal for the Electronic Literature Organization. At the workshop, we will present our current draft document, show the to do list, and determine how to partner with databases, such as ELMCIP, etc.

    Hi
Thank you for your interest in WP:WELW. Our monthly meeting will be tomorrow at 4 pm UTC. So far, we have identified the women who might be notable for their contributions to electronic literature and are researching the sources. We have also branched out into the Spanish and German wikipedias. Please join us and add your wisdom to our growing group? Thank you!
