Week 1

Course meetings
Monday, 9 January 2017   |   Wednesday, 11 January 2017   |   Friday, 13 January 2017
Introduction to the Wikipedia project (Week # does NOT equal CAL Weeks)

Welcome to our Wikipedia project's course timeline. This page will guide you through the Wikipedia project for the course. Be sure to check with your instructor to see if there are other pages you should be following as well.

Before you edit content, TAKE/LEARN STUDENT TUTORIALS ("Training" button)

NOTE from HWB:  This wiki course is organized in MODULES called Week 1, Week 2, Week 3, etc.  However these are NOT actually Spring Semester Calendar weeks.  They are just hard-coded into the editing system and can not be changed/corrected by the instructor.  The REAL DATES are given in the text within each module.

Your course has also been assigned a Wikipedia Content Expert. Check your Talk page for notes from them. You can also reach them through the "Get Help" button on this page.

To get started, please review the following handouts:

Week 2

Course meetings
Wednesday, 18 January 2017   |   Friday, 20 January 2017
Part 1
CREATE YOUR ACCT, JOIN COURSE, TAKE TRAINING TUTORIALS
  • ALL EDITS ARE LOGGED AND REVIEWED TO SEE ACTIVITIES

  • Create a Wikipedia account & join the course page, using the enrollment link your instructor sent you. On Wikipedia, you can be as anonymous as you want. If you want, you can review Wikipedia's username policy before you create your account.
  • Take all the trainings (GRADED FOR COMPLETION)
  • When you finish the trainings, you can practice the "talk" tool by introducing yourself to a classmate on that classmate’s Talk page. You can view a list of all the students in this course on the Students tab above.   And you can:
COPY TEXT to be edited into your
"GROUP-# TALK PAGE" Links Below (1,2,3,4,or5)  edit it and leave it there (GRADED)

Week 3

Course meetings
Monday, 23 January 2017   |   Wednesday, 25 January 2017   |   Friday, 27 January 2017
Part 2
CRITIQUE and EDIT wiki pages

It's time to think critically about Wikipedia articles and how they relate to genetics.  This module describes the TWO tasks associated with your Group, CRITIQUE & EDIT.  You will learn to critically evaluate your assigned articles and leave your notes in your sandbox space and when ready on the GROUP TALK PAGE, along with other student's posts.

You can come back and keep editing same or additional posts/edit/suggestions later.
Some edits may be used for final Friday Edits in class by the instructor.

Good efforts and edits can earn credits whether selected for Friday Edits or not.

GRADING SCHEME FOR BASS CLASS is in Syllabus
(100%wiki=75 of 500 tot course pts)

75 POINTS total from Wiki Class towards your 500 point total for the Sp17 course

+50 POINTS: (1) ARTICLE CRITIQUE (the 1st page assigned to YOUR group)
+25 POINTS: (2) Wikipedian Content Edi  (10 pt for tutorials, 15 pts for content edits)
USE Group Talk page to Post/Log editorial activities, notes, comments ...

(1) FIRST Group WIKI PAGE is typically well developed & used for the CRITIQUE assignment - a handout that you will fill out and turn in before class at least 1 week later.

(2) SECOND Group WIKI PAGE article is a related topic, but less well developed and in need of improvement (i.e. here you can contribute world knowledge while learning genetics).
Your assignment will involve working online in your wiki sandbox, with posts to your
Group TALK PAGE.  Here you will edit, comment, suggest revisions, improvements, corrections, citations, ... whatever you can find based on what you are learning and teach yourself through online knowledge exploration.   We will review the student edits and see if we can make a contribution as FSU Wikipedians for Genetics, our classroom Friday Edits !!!

(1) CRITIQUE ASSIGNMENT (GRADED)

CRITIQUE REPORT SHEETS will be handed out (hard copy) in class to group members 1 Week before they are due.
TURNING IN CRITIQUE REPORTS:  Due (HAND-WRITTEN ANSWERS) in class before the start of class - handed in to TA or Tutor in the back of the classroom.  Late reports not accepted.

To CRITIQUE an article, consider the following types of questions (you can leave notes in your sand box or in a separate online notebook, such as your own google drive pages):

  • Is each fact referenced with an appropriate, reliable reference?
  • Is everything in the article relevant to the article topic? Is there anything that distracted you?
  • Is the article neutral? Are there any claims, or frames, that appear heavily biased toward a particular position?
  • Where does the information come from? Are these neutral sources? If biased, is that bias noted?
  • Are there viewpoints that are overrepresented, or underrepresented
  • Check a few citations. Do the links work? Is there any close paraphrasing or plagiarism in the article?
  • Is any information out of date? Is anything missing that could be added?

(2) EDIT CONTENT using Group-# TALK PAGE posting & editing

EDIT-ME EXERCISE:

To EDIT CONTENT of an article choose at least 1 thing you would update or improve and make a note in the appropriate Group_# TALK PAGE
To POST  a NOTE for CREDIT - in the GROUP TALK PAGE

  1. ADD A NEW SECTION, using "New Section" button - enter a title for you post, comment or paste and edit parts of a paragraph.
    - leave multiple different posts in GROUP TALK PAGE, can do come back later edits.
    - SIGN your POSTS.
    - you can comment on other students post if you see the same things to improve.

To start, each student will be required to complete the "Sources and Citations" training Sources and Citations TRAINING:  Start

SAVE THIS LINK FOR YOUR GROUP: draft space to post, draft, suggest article contributions.

RECURRING ACTIVITIES YOU SHOULD DO:
Go back and review the talk page for your group recommendations periodically. Which 1 or 2 recommendations do you think is most critical to implement?  Leave comments there on others posts, or add new posts or draft a new group edit an co-sign it.

Use "SECTION TITLES" to give your post a "subject line"
Instructor (HWB) may also leave comments or give feedback.

EXAMPLES OF TYPES OF CONTENT EDIT ACTIVITIES YOU CAN HELP PRODUCE

  • New citations or references you think the article might be missing;
  • Old citations or references whose links are broken that you want to remove & replace;
  • New content you'd like to add that you think will fill a gap in the page. This should be no more than 5 new sentences, backed up with at least 2 citations.

*** How the suggested Wiki CONTENT EDITs (15 of 75 total wiki ed points) are evaluated:

HWB: Evaluation based on total user activities, logged under "User Contributions" left tab.  To see how your edits are logged, find & click on your own "User Contributions" tab.  It captures all your activities, tutorials, posts, comments, edits, ... no matter which wiki pages (talk, sandbox, other, ...) you edited.  Primarily looking to the "Group Talk" page for activities that indicate engagement and effort - multiple, substantive entries are expected for full credit.
