This course surveys the main empirical and theoretical literature on the determinants of peace, political violence, internal and international armed conflict, and other forms of organized violence. The class will focus on major social science themes such as the determinants of peaceful cooperation; the institutional and economic causes of armed conflict; the political determinants of ethnic conflict and genocide; the political economy of civil wars; the factors affecting the duration and termination of civil wars; the determinants of other different forms of political violence-including protests, military coups, and terrorism; and the role of
international organizations in solving conflict. The course is highly interdisciplinary and will cover a variety of cases from a comparative, empirical, and historical perspective.
