Introduction to Wikipedia

Welcome to the OILS 101 Wikipedia course page!

This course page supports your work on the Wikipedia Mini-Research Projects (MRPs) in OILS 101. It offers training modules to help you learn the nuts and bolts of properly editing an article. This course page also keeps the work we do in Wikipedia organized. It keeps track of which articles are claimed, edited, words added, etc.

This course page has been assigned a Wikipedia Expert. You can reach them through the Get Help button at the top of this page. You can also email Alyssa or Adrienne if you have questions.

Create a Wikipedia account and join this course page using the enrollment link provided in UNM Learn. (Because of Wikipedia's technical restraints, you may receive a message that you cannot create an account. To resolve this, please try again off campus or the next day.)

To find an available article, click on the Articles tab at the top of this page, then click on Available Articles. Feel free to browse the articles' content on Wikipedia before clicking Claim. Make sure you choose something you're interested in! If you cannot find something that interests you, let Adrienne and Alyssa know BEFORE the end of the week so we can find an article for you. You can also suggest to Adrienne and Alyssa a C-Class article of your choosing (we still need to approve it, though!).

Assignment - MRP #1 Due Sunday, April 12th at midnight

It's time to think critically about Wikipedia articles in MRP #1. For this project, you'll evaluate a Wikipedia article. You may find it useful to review some trainings for this assignment, linked in Week 1.

Your MRP #1 is due in UNM Learn on Sunday, April 12th by midnight.  See UNM Learn for assignment details.

MRP #2 Due Sunday, April 26

Based on your Wikipedia article evaluation, you'll be suggesting edits to improve the article. These will not be live edits -- you'll be turning in an edit log of those changes.  This MRP will set you up for your final MRP. You may find it useful to review some trainings for this assignment, linked in Week 1. If you'd like a reminder on how to find facts in library resources, Alyssa's Week 3 recording, "Add a Fact to Wikipedia Demo," is a great refresher. As always, please reach out if you need anything!

Your MRP #2 is due in UNM Learn on Sunday, April 26th by midnight.  See UNM Learn for assignment.

Feedback from Alyssa & Adrienne on MRP #2 Wiki edits back

Week 7

MRP #3 Due Sunday, May 10th

It's the final week to develop your article. Now that you have feedback on your draft, you will incorporate that feedback (yes, all of it!) and make your work live.  In other words, you'll be moving from the edit log to the mainspace of your Wikipedia page. You will also have a short reflective essay due.  Please see UNM Learn for assignment instructions & details.

  • Read Editing Wikipedia pages 13-15 to review moving work out of your sandbox as well as a final check-list before completing your assignment.
  • Don't forget that you can ask for help from your Wikipedia Expert, Adrienne, or Alyssa at any time!

Milestones

It's finals week at UNM and OILS 101 is not meeting. Once you turn in MRP #3, you'll have finished all of the work you'll do on Wikipedia (congratulations!).
