The 1989 Tour de France was the 76th edition of the race, one of cycling's Grand Tours. Consisting of 21 stages and a prologue, the 3,285 km (2,041 mi) event started on 1 July in Luxembourg and finished in Paris on 23 July. It was won by the American Greg LeMond, just eight seconds ahead of Laurent Fignon of France; Pedro Delgado of Spain came in third. LeMond and Fignon were never separated by more than fifty-three seconds throughout the event, and from stage 5 onwards, they traded off the leader's yellow jersey several times. LeMond took advantage of aerodynamic elbow-rest handlebars formerly used in triathlon events. The PDM–Ultima–Concorde team, the winner of the team classification, also won four of the five secondary individual classifications: Sean Kelly won both the points and intermediate sprints classifications, Gert-Jan Theunisse won the mountains classification and Steven Rooks won the combination classification. - @Dank: I will have to take a closer look at this. On quick glance, I think if the handlebars are included in the blurb, it needs to be explained better. Maybe leave it out and instead focus more on the competitive nature of the edition? On a different point: I would suggest nominating this as TFA on the last day of the 2019 Tour de France, as a "celebration" of sorts for the 30th anniversary.
