Deadline

[edit]

For example in the Czech ([1]) and Slovak ([2]) Wikipedias, it is impossible to promote an article in a time shorter than 4 weeks or 1 month. The deadline is therefore too short for these Wikipedias. (Moreover very few people know about the contest outside of the English Wikipedia, I fear.)--Ioannes Pragensis (talk) 08:04, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You have a good point. This is one reason I recently changed the contest rules to incorporate a prize for Good Article status. Presumably, then people can work towards featured status knowing that they will at least win if they only get to good status before the deadline. I am working on getting rid of the deadline and making this open-ended, but I can't make any promises about what will happen once I leave NARA, so that's why there is a deadline at all.

You also have a good point about making people aware, and we haven't yet even done a lot of publicizing on the English Wikipedia, either. Ideally, the contest would be translated into other languages and put on a local page on those Wikipedias. I would really appreciate if you'd be willing to help with this. Do you think you could do the Czech translation? :-) Dominic·t 13:32, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I left a short message on the Czech "Village Pump". I hope that most of the Czech contestants would be able to understand the rules from here. Best, --Ioannes Pragensis (talk) 14:30, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have removed the deadline altogether now. Thanks for your feedback. Dominic·t 20:29, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion

[edit]

I've been reading the article on the United States Declaration of Independence, and ended up at a subsidiary article titled Physical history of the United States Declaration of Independence. I then had the thought that it would make more sense for this 'physical history' article (maybe under a less clunky title) to be featured as part of this contest, as NARA would likely be able to help much more with this as it is directly about archival history and provenance, preservation and conservation, and location of various copies, as well as sources from NARA detailing the history of the transfer and conservation efforts. It also mentions NARA, which helps. I wonder if the other two documents have similar articles? Carcharoth (talk) 09:27, 23 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This is an awesome suggestion, and there are certainly enough sources for similar articles on the other documents. It would probably be an easier stepping stone to the full article, too. Dominic·t 12:40, 23 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Application

[edit]

Are the articles that become featured on foreign language Wikipedias included in the contest automatically, or do the authors have to apply somewhere? Jan.Kamenicek (talk) 09:54, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Does anybody follow this discussion page? Jan.Kamenicek (talk) 22:14, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'd hazard a guess that you'd have to e-mail the person running it to claim a prize, no matter what language you completed it in. --LauraHale (talk) 22:55, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, I have done so. Jan.Kamenicek (talk) 08:07, 14 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I haven't been watching this as closely as I should have. This is very exciting! Dominic·t 15:29, 14 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
So it is for me :-) Jan.Kamenicek (talk) 20:07, 14 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
