Jung Myung Seok

Some help resolving disputes concerning Jung Myung Seok would be appreciated. He's a Korean, but I know a few months ago he was all over Japanese news, and even a little bit in the last few days. Plus the Japanese Jung Myung Seok wikipage is much more developed than the Korean one. Since Jung Myung Seok is mostly unknown in the English speaking world, the article really needs editors who are familiar with the media overseas coming in to help out. Thanks. eye exams

There seems to be a bit of misinformation here. Amusing, if I could read the smaller characters; but, not anything you would find at an optometrist. Since I'm not sure if hiragana are ever used (all I've ever done is left/right/top/bottom for the gaps in the circles; but, that could be a Sendai thing), I'll leave the editorial correction to someone with more of a clue than me. I can't find the question, but can confirm from personal (incredulous) experience (i.e. "Original Research", so of course my confirmation is worthless) that hiragana are used. -- four eyes 10:32, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

Technical question

Not Wikipedia related, but does anyone know with reasonable certainty whether UTF-8 is a widely acceptable email encoding in Japan (yet)? Most email has been iso-2022-jp for quite some time, but if someone sends UTF-8 do nearly all email clients render it properly? If anyone who knows anything about this is willing to talk with me about it, I'd appreciate it. Thanks. -- Rick Block (talk) 04:22, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

Dissolved municipality cats

There has been some discussion about the categorization of dissolved towns, etc. Currently, most are still categorized in the Towns in XYZ Prefecture category along with current towns, and also in the omnibus Category:Dissolved municipalities of Japan. A proposal has been made to split that latter category, and create one new category per prefecture to hold all types of dissolved municipalities (no distinction between a dissolved village or dissolved town). Talk:List of mergers and dissolutions of municipalities in Japan is where the discussion started and has a few more details, but, this page has a wider audience. Are there any other suggestions? possible stealth vandal: asian characters expert

i don't know where else to go with this, so i'm posting here for assistance and/or direction:

Iokseng (talk · contribs) has been making questionable edits to articles using asian characters. once such edit was made to the article Double Fifth, which i know to be incorrect, and quite possibly vandalism. i've reverted the changes on that page, but if there's someone who can and check up this dude it would be great. --emerson7 | Talk 01:41, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

Many of the edits deal with links to the Chinese-language Wikipedia. I don't read Chinese, so you might get more information if you can find a similar notice board or Wikipedia project page for China- or Chinese-language-related topics and ask there. But the edits I saw appeared valid. The one you saw might have been erroneous. Or vandalism. Either way, readers of Chinese might be your best help. Fg2 10:19, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

硫黄島

That would be Iōtō (いおうとう). It appears that this was the common usage before the war, but the Americans picked up on the Iōjima reading used by the Japanese Navy and that name stuck. It appears that the article on Iwo Jima already notes the two readings. I suppose we could mention that Iōtō is the official reading, but otherwise the facts appear correct.
