Possible venues

[edit]

If we do just a picnic, then an park or beach park could do. If we do a Wiknic / edit-a-thon combo, perhaps we use one of our Hawaiʻi State Public Library System (HSPLS) branches that have a meeting room available on a Saturday and either are adjacent to a park or might have grounds that would accommodate a picnic if the branch would allow it. According to the "HSPLS Home Page". Retrieved April 28, 2012. Free wireless Internet access will be available in public libraries statewide beginning on Monday, April 2.

Below is information on the Oahu branches that have Saturday hours, meeting rooms / lanais, and possible picnic spots nearby:

Oahu branch Saturday hours Phone # Location Notes
Aiea 10:00am - 5:00pm 483-7333 99-143 Moanalua Rd. Aiea 96701 picnic on grounds?[1]

Kailua 10:00am - 5:00pm 266-9911 239 Kuulei Rd. Kailua 96734 adjacent park, no meeting room, but has two lanais,[3] one covered
Liliha 10:00am - 5:00pm 587-7577 1515 Liliha St. Honolulu 96817 adjacent park[2]

Waimanalo 10:00am - 2:00pm 259-2610 41-1320 Kalanianaole Hwy. Waimanalo 96795 parks nearby

Any other suggestions or thoughts? Peaceray (talk) 07:59, 15 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I found out the Meeting Rooms cost $25. The only room available in the afternoon after Wiknic time would be Waianae, & I do not want to spend $25 on what might be a light turnout, plus for me it would be a drive across the island. At this point I am inclined to call the Wiknic for Kailua District Beach Park from 11:30am to 1:30pm. We could then move to either Morning Brew Cafe or Chad Lou Cafe if we wanted to continue. I will check the Wifi signal on the lanai at the Kailua library. Peaceray (talk) 07:50, 8 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Wifi on the Kailua Library lanais was OK, but the sunlight made it difficult to read. Not much in the way of picnic tables at Kailua District Park, so I think Kailua Beach Park will be better. I get co-ordinates & directions as to where to meet. Peaceray (talk) 08:12, 12 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Notes

[edit]
  1. ^ a b Meeting room unavailable on Saturdays.
  2. ^ a b Booked for June 23rd
  3. ^ Unfortunately neither lanai has power, and we have not established yet if the Wifi signal extends to the lanais.

We'd like to invite representative(s) from the group who have some experience in organizing the local meetups, to join the Wikimedians Active in Local Regions of the United States (WALRUS) committee, our monthly IRC meetings, and the associated wikimediaus-l mailing list, to help advance real-life Wikimedian activities in the US, including Wiki Loves Monuments photography in September and Wikipedia Loves Libraries meetups in October/November.--Pharos (talk) 16:53, 22 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Any luck on the Wiknic?

[edit]

Was there at least a little wiknicking going on I hope? Best wishes for future wiki-meets!--Pharos (talk) 19:32, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Let's just say that attendance was extremely sparse. Hopefully future meetups will be more successful. Peaceray (talk) 07:23, 6 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
