The American Bible Challenge is a Bible-themed American television game show created by Game Show Network (GSN). It aired for three seasons from 2012 to 2014. Jeff Foxworthy hosts; Kirk Franklin (pictured) joined from the second season on. Each nine-episode tournament season asks Bible-related questions in various formats. One round, Stick a Fork in It, has teams use a spoon to catapult a fork into glasses labeled with different answers. Another, Kirk's Righteous Remix, has a choir singing songs relating to the Bible. The three season champions each won $140,000 for a chosen charity: Team Judson's Legacy chose a leukodystrophy charity in honor of a son of two of the team members, Team Wagner Warriors chose a missionary organization founded by the father of the team members, and Team Bible Belts chose a nonprofit which combines Bible study and taekwondo. The show debuted as GSN's highest-rated original program. In 2014, it was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Game Show. (Full article...)

game format details

[edit]

i am admittedly a bit concerned about the state of the current blurb, as i had struggled to understand the format of the game from reading this blurb. there is a lot of information that had to be crammed into a very small space, so many things ended up being confusing to me. for example, "opening round" seems to refer both to the first episodes of a season as well as the start of those first episodes, and it is not initially clear that "following round" does not refer to the round next described, but refers to a round that follows the opening round (second sense), which is still part of the opening round (first sense). it also surprised me that the procedural details of the opening round (first sense) was described in so much detail, while the text describing the later rounds seemed almost like an afterthought. i don't think anyone is at fault here; i couldn't figure out a way to clearly reword that section of the blurb myself.

would people be open to a rewrite of the blurb? i was thinking of following Dank's example of focusing on different aspects of the featured subject for an article's second tfa run. i was hoping to include more specific details about the game's presentation and its contestants, and perhaps mention a pun or two (as the game seems to be known for them). if this seems like a good idea, i will post a draft here for review. if the draft turns out to be even worse, we can always keep the current blurb.

If you want to take a try at it, go ahead.--Wehwalt (talk) 11:27, 15 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Wehwalt, here's what i was able to come up with. note that i ended up keeping most of the details that were mentioned at the start and end of the original blurb. the rest is largely based on the wording in the article body.

there are a few additional points i think i should mention.
  • since foxworthy's image was already featured during the article's first tfa run, i thought it would make sense to feature franklin, the other host, for the second run. this photo of franklin was apparently taken from the flickr account of a professional photographer who released the photo under cc by-sa 2.0, so i assume that there are no copyright issues. the lighting admittedly isn't great, but the photo of franklin currently being used in the article has his face partially blocked. (the image originally used when the article was promoted is even more problematic.) if the lighting is an issue, i can submit a request at the graphics lab to see what they can do. alternatively, the commons category for kirk franklin may have something more suitable. if you don't think any of them are appropriate, i can switch the blurb back to using a picture of foxworthy.
  • "Biblical-themed" was replaced with "Bible-themed" because i believe (though am not certain) that the suffix "-themed" is generally used with nouns. i think google tends to return more results for "Bible-themed x" than "Biblical-themed x". (see, for example, a search for "bible-themed birthday party" with about 760 results, versus one for "biblical-themed birthday party" with no results.) in any case, if "Biblical" is used, i think it should be uncapitalized to conform with mos:god. the phrase "game show with a biblical theme" could also work, but it seems like an unnecessary waste of nine characters to me.
  • the article body uses the capitalization "Stick a Fork In It", but i believe that the preposition "in" should be uncapitalized to conform with mos:titlecaps.
  • the article body uses the spelling "organisation", but i used "organization" in the blurb to conform with mos:ties.
  • the description "GSN's highest-rated original program", taken directly from the article body, is based on sources from 2012 reporting on the debut episode. i do not know if the show is still gsn's highest-rated original program, but i think the blurb is currently worded to avoid suggesting that it is.
i would be happy to hear your thoughts on the draft. criticism is definitely welcome. dying (talk) 08:42, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Wehwalt, i just wanted to ping you again as i try to get my copyediting for a blurb done about a week before it is scheduled to appear on the main page. no worries if you haven't found the time to comment on the draft yet. if you end up being too busy today as well, i will probably just post a copyedit of the current blurb in the meantime. it would add a caption, replace "Biblical-themed" with "Bible-themed", and insert a hyphen between "highest" and "rated". as i can't really think of a good way to describe the procedural details of the game, i would leave that section untouched, as i don't want to make it any worse. dying (talk) 19:03, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good to me. Feel free to change it.--Wehwalt (talk) 19:26, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
