Noticeboard for Regular Editors ABOUT Admins
Has there ever been a suggestion for a noticeboard specifically for regular editors only to discuss and even take action against less-than-honest Administrators. It seems to me that there should be a way for regular users to simply deal with issues with Admins in such a way that cannot simply be blocked by other Admins. There should even, in extreme cases, be a way for regular editors to have Admins demoted. I believe that this would create a much more fair and democratic sense of checks and balances on Wikipedia that is much needed in the increasingly hostile and unfair atmosphere of the site. This problem seems to get worse every year and there really does need to be a way for regular editors to keep things fair. Years ago I made the suggestion of "term limits" on some noticeboard, which was aggressively shot down. I simply ask that a mature, level-headed and non-petty Admin takes a serious consideration to this idea.--Deoliveirafan (talk) 02:59, 7 July 2014 (UTC)

WP:DISCOGSTYLE dormant
Hi there, I am member of the Discography WikiProject and while I edit discography projects I always turn to this, however it has became dormant. I beliebe this should not by any means be dormant and should be an active guideline, discographies should be similar so as they are easily recognised from article to article. Can someone help me make this active again and also help me make it more of a guideline or standard for other discography pages? I have no idea how to make it active again and since hardly anyone patrols/watches this page I got no response there. SilentDan (talk) 15:42, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
- @SilentDan297: Please see the note at the top of this page: "this page is for discussion about the village pump only". A better page would be WT:COUNCIL, possibly WP:VPM, but WT:ALBUMS is possibly more relevant. --Redrose64 (talk) 20:33, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

Filled edit box discouraging edit summaries
Does anyone else feel, as I do, that the fact that the edit box is occupied by type (particularly with the new longer IP numbers) means it is hard to see where you are supposed to put the edit summary and is discouraging editors from leaving them? Sometimes I am exasperated when I can only use three words before running up against the limit when the existing address has taken up nearly all the space, and I've been here quite a while. Slow down the archiving?
We have so many RFCs lately, especially in the Policy and Proposals subpages. I have used {{subst:do not archive until}} to prevent the bot from archiving a discussion too soon. Shall we slow down the archiving from 7 days to 14 days? If not, what else shall we do about the number of RFCs? --George Ho (talk) 04:45, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
- IMO, RfCs and anything else that needs closing should use a semi-permanent DNAU (10 years) which is removed after the close. That makes far more sense than keeping everything longer. Even 14 days would not be long enough if it takes 15 days for a closer to show up. ―Mandruss ☎ 04:57, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
- 10 years or 10 days? 10 years seems too steep, and some closers would overlook the message. George Ho (talk) 05:11, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
- 10 years. The time is not meant to expire. If the closer does not remove the DNAU, any other editor can do so. It's unlikely it will sit at the top of TOC for long before someone realizes why and removes the DNAU. Note that I suggest 10 years because that's the default and therefore the easiest to code; it's a (relatively) simple and easy-to-remember
{{subst:DNAU}}
. If the default were one year or 6 months, that would be fine too, but it isn't. ―Mandruss ☎ 05:24, 1 March 2017 (UTC) - In my opinion,
{{rfc}}
should generate{{subst:DNAU}}
, saving us that step, but that's a separate proposal that probably belongs at WP:VPR. I suggested it once on an article talk page and got no response. ―Mandruss ☎ 09:03, 1 March 2017 (UTC)- Hey, look. It was suggested at Template talk:Rfc#Do not archive until in Dec 2014. It didn't gain wide attention, so there wasn't a consensus to insert it. --George Ho (talk) 11:45, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
- That's interesting. Well I already have one proposal active and I try not to wear out my welcome at the Pumps. A couple of proposals per year is about my limit. Anyway, it makes sense to wait until the use of 10-year DNAU in RfCs becomes widely accepted, which is not at all certain. ―Mandruss ☎ 11:59, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
- I don't know if I would support the slowing down as it could still mean archiving of discussions that aren't closed, though it would probably help for now, but I think I prefer Mandruss's proposal. I'm just interested because I've been involved in a discussion that was archived without being closed, so no consensus was ever implemented across any affected articles (and I'm actually quite sad about it!). anemoneprojectors 10:00, 12 April 2017 (UTC)

I'm putting this suggestion here because it applies to the Village Pump.
Instead of having different sections for type of suggestion (policy, proposals, idea lab, etc...), I think that the Village Pump should have different sections for each section of Wikipedia that the suggestion applies to (user pages, welcoming new users, talk pages, blocking policies, etc...). Not only does the idea itself make more sense to me, but with the system that the Village Pump has now, it can often be unclear which section someone's suggestion fits into (also partly because of vague labels for each section), which may prompt some to put their suggestion in every section that they feel their suggestion MIGHT belong in. Also, the new system would make it easier for people to determine if their suggestion has already been made or not. By the way, if this suggestion is in the incorrect section, feel free to move it, and I'm sorry, but there's not a specified section for proposed edits to the Village Pump.98.195.88.33 (talk) 21:56, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
- Support. This idea does make more sense. The Mysterious El Willstro (talk) 01:52, 17 March 2017 (UTC)
- Question. How many "sections" are you proposing? Please elaborate more. Jason Quinn (talk) 18:34, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
Call for clarification
The introductory to the Wikipedia Village pump, in which one sees the five sections, says that this page should not be used for discussions. Should this section not also mention that the Village pump's sub-sections are for discussions and that the phrase "not for discussions" only refers to the title page? After all, each of the five sub-sections do seem to me to be areas where discussions take place. Wikipedia proposals and Wikipedia Ideas Lab. are probably the best examples of this. Vorbee (talk) 19:07, 1 July 2017 (UTC)
- Wikipedia:Village pump says:
This page is not for discussions. Please use the table below to find the most appropriate section to post in, or post in the miscellaneous section.
- That seems clear to me. Four of the five sections start the description with "To discuss". And clicking any of the sections will show lots of discussions. It's hard to imagine users thinking they aren't allowed to discuss there. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:01, 4 September 2017 (UTC)
Has miscellaneous always been empty?
Out of curiosity, I just had a quick look at the box headed "Miscellaneous" but it was empty. Has this always been empty? If so, I wonder about the point of this sub-section. Vorbee (talk) 14:25, 4 September 2017 (UTC)

List of Masses by Anton Bruckner
Before moving Masses (Bruckner) to List of Masses by Anton Bruckner I made mistakes, i.e., I blanked Masses (Bruckner) and its talkpage, and put its content into a new page List of masses by Anton Bruckner, which has been deleted in the meantime.
The move of Masses (Bruckner) to List of Masses by Anton Bruckner is now correct, but, because of my mistakes, that of the Talk:List of Masses by Anton Bruckner is not. Its should content the last revision of the Talk:Masses (Bruckner) before my mistakes of 1 August 2018.
Could you please fix it? Thanks in advance, --Réginald alias Meneerke bloem (To reply) 09:54, 1 August 2018 (UTC)

Village Pump?
Shouldn't "village pump" be considered a proper noun, i.e. "Village Pump"? I believe I've seen it capitalized when referred to. I make the same observation about "help desk". There is a village pump somewhere, but the specific Village Pump; likewise a help desk vs. the Help Desk. I realize it may be too late to change this, but it still looks funny to me. Stop using GeoIP
This is a request for Wikipedia to stop using GeoIP and discriminate between users, based on their presumed physical location, by displaying language-inappropriate content.
The credibility of Wikipedia (I'm talking about the English language version only) depends on users all around the world being able to access the same content. GeoIP breaks this. Currently, Wikipedia uses session-based cookies to store GeoIP information; those cookies survive attempts by users to hide their identity, for example, by activating a Tor proxy. The "GeoIP" cookie provides sufficient information to uniquely identify contributors, in at least some cases (this includes my own), at least if some rudimentary further analysis is performed.
Again, Wikipedia continues sending this cookie after the internet connection changes; once a session is GeoIPed, the cookie survives and is sent through the new connection, effectively tracking people. Including, of course, people who decide to send a DNT header, which Wikipedia appears to ignore.
The implication that people outside of English-speaking countries should edit Wikipedia in "their own" language, rather than edit the encyclopedia anyone can edit, is incredibly offensive. Redirecting people to content in other languages (outside of the "Languages" tab) is harmful and divisive. I'm sure that this isn't what's intended to be conveyed, but it is what people take away from it, and it has led to severe quality problems both on enbaike.710302.xyz and the foreign-language spin-offs.
I have made very bad experiences with the Wikipedia "community" and would not be surprised if this decision was discussed and the concerns ignored in favor of imitating commercial internet companies in their effort to reduce internet users to advertising demographics.
enbaike.710302.xyz should be the same site for everyone. A screenshot of Wikipedia should not identify users. In most of the world, being personally identified as someone who speaks out on controversial issues is dangerous.
This is in part a slippery slope argument. People have different definitions for what constitutes site "content" rather than being in some way non-content that doesn't matter. My idea is that everything Wikipedia sends is content, and none of it should differ based on a user's GeoIP data. The BBC argued that it was okay to show different selections of articles to users based on their GeoIP status, with no official way of accessing domestic headlines for a foreign IP and vice versa. I don't want Wikipedia to go there.
But it's only in part a slippery slope argument: what Wikipedia does currently is bad. It's identifying users, putting contributors at risk, collecting data that it doesn't need, sending out divisive messages, and disrupting user experiences by jarring foreign-language intrusions.
I see absolutely no convincing reason any of that should happen. If Wikipedia has a problem turning casual visitors into editors, I would strongly deny that the right approach to solving this problem is to bombard them with advertising messages sending them to this week's fashionable unnecessary "sister project".
Again, since my experience with Wikipedia and its community has been so horrible so far, I don't expect this to be taken seriously, and I cannot make any promises about following up on any discussion, or "discussion", which might ensue. This is a rare instance of someone who has left Wikipedia coming back to complain about how much of a disappointment it has been, rather than those who stayed congratulating each other on how great they are. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Throwaway14251 (talk • contribs) 14:50, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
- I won't pretend to understand what you're talking about (it seems somewhat technical), but I don't think this is the place for it. This page is for discussing the Village Pump. If I were to guess, a better location for the discussion you want to have would probably be either Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) or Wikipedia:Village pump (WMF). ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 17:35, 10 September 2020 (UTC)

| Home | Policy | Technical | Proposals | Idea lab | WMF | Miscellaneous |
Option 2 (Section menu - start)
Home • Table of contents • First discussion • End of page • New post
Option 3 (Section menu - end)
Table of contents • First discussion • End of page • New post • Back to Home
Note: The link could be labeled "Home", "Main page", "Project home", etc.
I hope you like this idea or wish to improve it. Cordially, History DMZ (talk)+(ping) 08:32, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
- I tried it with a link to the combined page as well. See Template:Village pump page header/sandbox — GhostInTheMachine talk to me 10:53, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you for taking the initiative before I did GhostInTheMachine. It looks excellent, I hope everyone else approves too. Cordially, History DMZ (talk)+(ping) 12:37, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
- I did try to start a discussion at the talk page for the VP header template, but nobody will have seen it there. The discussion probably needs to be in VP proposals — GhostInTheMachine talk to me 13:03, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
- There was also this similar discussion (from 2014!) just above yours in case you missed it: Template talk:Village pump page header#Proposed addition. In this instance the idea was to add this nice little icon:

guessing "perennial" regarding separating pages
I'm guessing this is one of those "perennial" questions. Could someone point me to some previous discussions that ask about separating article/user pages from the talk pages for the watchlist. Example: I want to watchlist John Wayne, but don't want to see the talk page show up in my watchlist (or the reverse). thanks. — Ched (talk) 07:48, 26 May 2021 (UTC)
Hi, looking to make a technical query, here cf tea/coffeehouse. How does one search categories, templates etc together? Thanks. Ema--or (talk) 17:19, 26 June 2021 (UTC)

Should we have a more intuitive word for resizing images than "upright"?
Despite sizing images in absolute pixels being deprecated, that's how most of our images are. I think part of the problem might be that "upright" is not an intuitive parameter name. It certainly took me long enough to figure it out. When used on its own, "upright" makes perfect sense for scaling to 75% (of user default) for imgs in portrait orientation, but once you get to "upright=1.5" for wide images it's pretty much gibberish. I think if we introduced a more intuitive label, such as maybe "scale", we might have more success with people switching over. ("Upright" would continue to be supported, of course, but we'd have a more-easily memorized term as well.) I thought I might make a request at phabricator.wikimedia.org, but wanted to run it by here first. Would people support this, and would anyone prefer a different word than "scale"? — kwami (talk) 01:12, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
- Sounds good, for those who are still learning to write Wikisource. Of course, most editors who joined in the past few years are inserting and adjusting pictures by Visual Editor, so they have no need to learn the markup language anyway. Jim.henderson (talk) 21:19, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Kwamikagami: can you propose this change at WP:VPR? As I have said in the phab task, the technical part of adding an alias is easy, I have "scale" ready to commit. But they may not approve it if they think there is insufficient support for this. So proposing a specific word "scale" or something else at VPR and getting consensus for it will increase the likelihood of this being approved. ಮಲ್ನಾಡಾಚ್ ಕೊಂಕ್ಣೊ (talk) 18:29, 19 January 2023 (UTC)

- For the record: this is not a correct page to talk about MediaWiki syntax. WP:VPT or Help talk:Pictures would have been a better venue for this discussion. This page is for discussions about layout, contents, and processes of the page Wikipedia:Village pump, not for discussions about image syntax. —andrybak (talk) 10:34, 10 March 2023 (UTC)
Absolute garbage new interface
I don't know where else to put this, but I just want to say that the new webpage design is absolutely, irredeemably awful. I genuinely think that I will stop using this website, and that many others will too, if it is not quickly changed back, because the amount of blank space at the sides of the redesigned page layout is simply obnoxious, not to mention all the other awful features of this sudden and un-asked for change. I highly, HIGHLY suggest at the very least a "legacy mode" option that can be used to return to the previous user interface, because as it is this website frankly looks like trash. 2601:405:4400:9420:DC22:E380:D2EE:15A9 (talk) 03:22, 19 January 2023 (UTC)
- One of the benefits of creating an account is the ability to revert back to the old skin, please consider creating one. There is more discussion about the new skin at WP:VPT. ಮಲ್ನಾಡಾಚ್ ಕೊಂಕ್ಣೊ (talk) 18:36, 19 January 2023 (UTC)
- I gave the new format the heave-ho. I hate it. Give it a try! A loose necktie (talk) 14:49, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
- A lot of people prefer to use Wikipedia anonymously, and any seasoned user here would recognize that there is a movement for anonymity. In the past year, however, it seems that Wikipedia has changed their tone on these users. The coercive nature of "Just create an account to switch skins" is ridiculous. 142.189.35.192 (talk) 13:01, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
