Help needed with List of Bands from Bristol

I don't like the article List of Bands from Bristol. It has too many red links and non-linked entries. I dont think they should be in the list. I would appreciate contributors to this project taking a look at the article and my comments on the talk page - Talk:List_of_Bands_from_Bristol#Red_links_and_non_links. Yes, that is much better, and the template has a "float" parameter. I don't know how to update the Bristol mapbox to be able to float too. --Funandtrvl (talk) 19:46, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

I don't think this dates from 1946. The Redcliffe Bascule Bridge built 1942 is missing, as is the road thro' Queen's Square built 1937. --Quentin Smith (talk) 15:35, 20 January 2010 (UTC)

Page moves of St Pauls and St Werburghs

User:Ajuk has moved St Pauls, Bristol to St Paul's, Bristol without discussion, ven though I specifically asked for one. A simialr action was performed on St Werburghs. Now I have no massively strong feelings as both versions are used but the city council ward profile for Ashley ward uses the non-apostrophised version. No discussion needed IMHO. He acted without consultation (perhaps thinking WP:BOLD means you can ignore consensus) but was wrong. I just moved St Werburghs back to where it belongs. I see that St Pauls has already been moved. Although one must assume good faith, looking at this editor's history on his/her talk page I just see a person who is not a particularly good wikipedian. --Simple Bob (talk) 22:28, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, although both names are possessive, I would let St Werburghs go, St Paul's is much more common though. One common reason for derision of Wikipedia is bad grammar and spelling mistakes in articlesAJUK Talk!! 22:50, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
Disagree. Why do you say both names are possessive. There is no definitive use of either. Both Bristol City Council (perhaps the people who should be authorative) and the BBC use both versions. Organisations with St Pauls itself use both versions. The fact there is no definitive usage is justification for making no change and leaving the article as it has always been - St Pauls --Simple Bob (talk) 23:06, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

Place names don't necessarily follow the grammatical "rules" that you are trying to enforce. there is no compelling reason for the change. Both forms are used by various official bodies. Thus there is no need for change. Jezhotwells (talk) 23:20, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
You're right, St Werburghs doesn't at least not any more, but St Paul's does, every single reference linked to on that page (that works) refers to it as St Paul's. And one of the references is even spelled differently to the page it links to. AJUK Talk!! 23:27, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
Just to add, I noticed you have the Apostrophe Abuse template on your page, which seems odd because it's exactly that, that has made this so common, so it seems strange that you would defend it. The reason why both versions are used is because often people either don't realise or remember to put it there (which is often fair enough, but this is meant be an encyclopaedic article) I doubt it's often missed out by a deliberate decision, with the expectation of the council's signage, but apparently that's because the apostrophes can "confuse people", they should try driving in Wales!. After a recent request, I added WikiProject Bristol to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Bristol/Popular pages.

The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. Map being deleted from St Mary Redcliffe

A couple of users are deleting the infobox map at St Mary Redcliffe. I would appreciate others from this project weighing in to stop this please. I don't want to fall foul of 3RR. --Simple Bob (talk) 13:18, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

This just cropped up again today. This project page has clear direction that maps are to be used on Bristol-related topics. Again I don't want to get into an edit war, but really would appreciate other project members watching the article. Westbury-on-Trym hyphens

This one may possibly be a bit of an old chestnut, but is there a consensus on whether Westbury-on-Trym with hyphens is the standard spelling we should use, and if so, should existing occurrences be renamed? Specifically I'm wondering about moving Holy Trinity Church, Westbury on Trym to the hyphened version, to be consistent with the Westbury page itself. I noticed too that it's still spelled without hyphens on the List of places in Bristol page. Thanks Aegoceras (talk) 16:22, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

Looking at every map I can find via the coordinates on the Westbury on Trim article, I can't see the name used with a hyphen on any map - including current and old versions of OS maps. I would question why the article has hyphenated in the first place - it was moved without discussion in 2007, but nobody at the time challenged it. --Simple Bob (talk) 18:04, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
These things are rarely clear cut. There are examples of the name being hyphenated eg census data from BCC and British History Online. I did the stub for the church and I followed English Heritage but I'm not sure the is one "right way".— Rod talk 18:14, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
It appears that I was the one who moved it to its current location back in my early days on Wikipedia, even though I don't remember doing it! There seem to be many sources that use hyphens, and many that don't, so I don't think there's a right way or a wrong way. As long as appropriate redirects are in place, which they are, I don't think there's a problem with it being where it is. Bristol articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

WikiProject cleanup listing

I have created together with Smallman12q a toolserver tool that shows a weekly-updated list of cleanup categories for WikiProjects, that can be used as a replacement for WolterBot and this WikiProject is among those that are already included (because it is a member of Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions). I've had a couple of messages from Steve Virgin, who is on the board of Wikimedia UK, about this:

  • If we make a formal submission to the board for support (financial or other) he would present it to the board & it would be likely that a small amount of funding would be available for a one off or regular meetups
  • If the Wikipedia Bristol Project can 'self organise' a small group on the morning of 13 January between 9.30am & 11.30am - he can fix up a 20 min meeting for it with Jimmy Wales before he speaks. He is pinning down his agenda for the day now...we need to gauge interest & tell Steve a time before end of week I can do this for the group. Mind you no more than 20 mins! We have press & other groups to talk to him before the event. I think we need between 5-10 people before it is worthwhile - all active Wikimedians from Bristol area

I understand it is possible to book seminar type rooms in the Victoria rooms - but I have no idea of cost yet. I don't think he will be joining us in the pub afterwards (therefore any trip to the pub would have to be self funding - The Berkeley has been suggested).

If people would like to meet Jimmy Wales before his talk, & can be in Bristol that morning, please indicate on here within the next few days - we need to get a reasonable number. I don't think so in this context. I think wikimedians includes those who use the wikimedia software in other applications - the ones which jump to my mind are commons, wiktionary, wikiquote etc but there may be others that use the software in other applications I'm not aware of.— Rod talk 21:20, 27 November 2010 (UTC)

Many thanks for kicking off this conversation for me Rod etc - I am grateful. As the details are taking shape for Jimmy's day now - let me sketch them out for you (remember this is a sketch not a concrete cast iron plan).

8.17am Jimmy arrives bristol temple meads - picked up and devlivered to Bristol cathedral - here he speaks for 10-15 mins to an assembly of Bristol Cathedral Chior school about 10th Birthday, the wikimedia movement, volunteerism etc (this should run something like 8.55am to 9.15am)

9.30am We Wikimedians that is - camp in Watershed One (5 mins walk from the Cathedral). I'd need help HERE getting a couple of posters of Wikimedia UK/Wikipedia up on the walls nice & early so that later press photos have a backdrop against which JW can sit.

9.30 - 11.30am There will be 'groups from around the city interested in working with Wikimedia' + 'press' + our own volunteer community - with an opportunity to see Jimmy. I am thinking that instead of restricting this to 10-20 mins - if the volunteers are in the room & we are working together to make sure things run smoothly that would be a better way of working things. This also gives people the chance to meet, greet, have a coffee with JW during that 2 hours.

11.30am - we 'as a group' walk up the hill to the venue where JW speaks & take our seats

12-1pm - the talk

1pm - 2pm - JW leaves the venue (sorry!!!) as he has an evening event in London 6.30-8.30pm - details not confirmed yet as it is run out of JW's office

On day - goals - 1) to get the Bristol project team established and encourage them to have a formal monthly Wikimeet - supported by the Wikimedia UK Board in whatever way we can - 2) Press - as much positive press as possible for our projects/our movement & our volunteers - highlighting the 10th birthday celebrations 3) BBC - they are notoriously reluctant to give anything away for 'free' - if it keeps its word the whole event will be filmed & given away for free to Wikimedia & all supporting partners (Bristol festival of ieas, university of bristol, Bristol city council + HP Labs) - this sets a precedent for further content share that we can build on 4) HP Labs is picking up the tab for the day - this is marvellous news - they have been fantastic to our community 5) The whole City is collaborating together as one to promote this event - this is great & can only lead to more support in 2011 & 2012 - indeed Festival of Ideas has proposed a project with a working title Bristol & The Word 2012 - which is an amalzing attempt to get the whole City documenting facts, about & experiences of all things relating to Bristol - I am sure Wikimedia has a part to play in creating this

Conflicts/worries

This event has 'sold out' all 650 tickets have been reserved. I have held back around 50 tickets (might be able to squeeze a handful more) that i want to specifically give to Wikimedians - this can be 'active Wikimedians' but I'd prefer it to be members of 'Wikimedia UK' - it is not for me to exclude any group that is active. You'd make my life easier though if you joined Wikimedia UK (cost is only £5 so won't break the bank)

Going forward There are projects & ideas around Bristol that groups like the BBC are very interested in. One is the Somali Project - this is one group I am hoping to get to meet Jimmy on the day. JW wants to get African language content on Wikipedia. In every city in western europe there are sizeable marginalised communities. If we could get those groups that are working to better these communities to promote Wikipedia & volunteerism for our projects - when they are able to become experienced editors & writers on Wikipedia - they would simply flip from adding content in English to Somali. This would apply to whatever marginalised community a project like this occured. This idea has never been done. I have all the significant Somali Groups lined up & keen & committed - but I'd need help from the Bristol project team to kick this off - as we need trainers/mentors. Don't worry about the computing side as Bristol City Council are offering reconditioned PC's to any without & they say they's also find cash to set up WIFI hotspots in key areas to make this happen as well.

Campus Ambassador Program

The Stanton Foundation in the US has donated a large sum in the USA to set up campus ambassadors in the USA. It has been a roaring success - though it was targetted at public policy in the USA. One of the leading advocates/trained ambassadors Alex Stinson is coming to the UK to study at Oxford Jan 7 - June 27. I am seeking to get him in to as many universities as practical (given his time constraints) so that we can lay the seeds that will create Campus Ambassadors in the UK. I see this being a 'flexible program' that could be based around universities or perhaps even cities - e.g a Bristol Ambassador

This is not 'defined yet.' Nothing is set in stone. The Board has to discuss.

Wikipedian in Residence

User WittyLama was an amazing ambassador for Wikimedia at the British Museum earlier this summer. This has led to the GLAM WIKI Conference we held Nov 26/27. There is absolutely no reason why we cannot create Wikipedian in Residence programmes in/or around major content donors in Bristol. I'll be there, as a Bristol-based Wikimedian who isn't a member of this wikiproject ("Wikimedian" just means anyone who contributes to any of the nine Wikimedia projects, so it includes Wikipedians).
I personally think it would be really useful to have occasional real-life meetups. For one thing, I'd welcome a chance to wiki-gossip and share tips (it's easier to learn some things in person, and it can be a relief to learn that others have gone through the same frustrations that you have). A possibly more important reason is the great potential for helping the Wikimedia projects by liaising with local groups, showing more people how to work with WP. As you can see above, Steve has been doing amazing work getting people from various sectors interested, and he just needs some help to get his projects up and running. Wikimedia UK, external bodies and the articles themselves can all benefit.
We need to get the message of this event out to a wider range of local wikimedians who aren't involved in this wikiproject. What tools are appropriate for this? MartinPoulter (talk) 23:07, 29 November 2010 (UTC)

Live Streaming of the event (still in organisational phase)

As I type this has not been confirmed yet, but I am still trying to get this all paid for by Bristol City Council as part of the sponsorship deal for this event. This will mean that this event can go out live onto the internet.

In conjunction with this, I'd also like support from the community for earlier in the 'day' - I have organised free coverage of Jimmy talk to the kids at Bristol Cathedral school - this footage is important to the media & I'd like help in getting it out through social media + UP ON Wikinews...maybe if we could get it up on Wikinews minutes after it was taken...all social media links that we all tweet can point people back to Wikinews? Point of something like this - to drum up a bigger audience online for a live streaming event. It would also be cool if any press interested had to use OUR footage and not their own.

Sorry for the confusion. From 9.30 on, Jimbo will be in the Watershed (Waterside 1; a room on the far side of the bar) and it will be great to have some Wikipedians there. His every minute is booked up with meetings, but there's a short slot (9.30 prompt) for him to thank WP volunteers. Later on is the public lecture at the Victoria Rooms (get to the building for 11.30) and I'm suggesting, since the morning will no doubt be very rushed, a more relaxed meet-up between us after the lecture as well. Bristol Wikimedia Academy

There's a free one-day event co-hosted by Wikimedia UK and the University of Bristol in a week's time, at which some members of this Wikiproject will be presenting. I hope this will be the first of a series of events bringing together local Wikipedia/Wikimedia contributors, interested parties and local or national organisations and groups who might be interested in some sort of partnership. If this takes off, I hope to involve more members of this wikiproject.

All are welcome at the event: just email a request to my address (on the invitation), and please bring this to the attention of anyone who might benefit. I'm sure there will be social drinking afterwards. Steve Virgin has invited various parts of Bristol University, the City Council and other local groups and bodies, but there might be groups that we've missed. In the Summer of 2011, Wikimedia UK and ARKive are colloborating on a project to improve Wikipedia's coverage of threatened species. This will involve recruiting a fixed-period in-residence role that we are calling Wikipedia Outreach Ambassador. Converting OSGB36 (OS grid refs) to coords on various lists

I have started a discussion about converting the OSGB36 (OS grid refs) on various lists including Grade I listed buildings in Bristol to use Template:Coord, as I think this offers advantages for users worldwide (who may be unfamiliar with the OS system) and the use of Template:GeoGroupTemplate to enable mapping on googlemaps etc. I have been told that a bot could be tasked to do this, however this would be quite a significant change and would not want to do it without consensus. Open Geodata for Bristol

Hi all, I've put together some links and notes on the Wikimedia UK site here about Open GeoData. I'm trying to bring together an audit of the geodata created in and around a city, choosing Bristol as an example. I hope we can assemble a network of open content projects, developers and public bodies to raise awareness of what can be done with open geodata, get the public creating more data through tools such as the Wikimedia projects, and maybe generate collaborative projects and bids for funding.

I've highlighted the work done by this Wikiproject, of course. Where I could do with help is with 1) other sources of local geodata, either open or interesting proprietary stuff that could be replicated by open data, or 2) photos and screenshots of geodata actually in use, where there's some connection with Bristol. Bristol is already very advanced in this area, in part thanks to your work, and it would be great to make it more visible as a world leader for this sort of technology. What is the copyright status? Generally taking a photo of 2 two dimensional work of art (which may or may not include notes) can be considered an infringement of the artists work. Many organisations eg Bank of England release specimen photos see Bank of England note issues. (Not that I've seen any of the Bristol notes yet).— Rod talk 11:02, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

Sorry if it seems out of order, and I agree that posting a request here for an image is appropriate. However, what's not so useful is posting similar requests in more than one place, which can easily lead to forked discussions. WP:CONLIMITED refers to not determining consensus via WikiProjects. I was trying to avoid both things. If you think it's better to have the discussion here, then please feel free to reopen the discussion but it's not the usual way of doing things, and someone else may re-close again. Personally, I tend to try to begin discussions in the most directly relevant place and then use {{Pls}} to direct other interested parties there. No hard feelings, I hope. Backstage Pass at the Bristol Record Office

I had a useful meeting this week at the Bristol Record Office about how they could work with Wikipedia. We've discussed the idea of a Backstage Pass/ Editathon event there early next year. We still need to discuss what theme the event might focus on (the harbourside? Bristol industry?) and what items from the BRO collection we might want access to. Please help get Bristol ready for the start of the Wiki Loves Monuments competition on 1st September

In September the UK is taking part for the first time in the international photography competition Wiki Loves Monuments. Participants will be invited to submit pictures of listed buildings of significant importance (grades I or grade II*), as recorded by English Heritage. The main external website for competitors can be found here, and you can leave a message there if you have queries about competing. Do please join in, and let people in your local area know of this excellent way in which both existing and new Wiki users can help improve the encyclopaedia by contributing photographs of local listed structures. What about organizing a local Wikimeet to attract new people?

In preparation for the start of the competition on 1st September (and beyond) there is still some work to do, and we would like to ask for the help of members of this wikiproject. Your local and expert knowledge will be invaluable in ensuring that the lists of eligible buildings are up to date and correctly formatted. If you look at Listed buildings in the United Kingdom you will see how many structures are included. If you then follow the link to Listed buildings in England, you can get to the detailed lists for your area. Alternatively have a look at the WLM planning table. Can you help to ensure that the lists for your area are up to date and well presented?

Some of the lists have been semi-automatically generated from data provided by English Heritage. These use pre formatted templates (eg EH header) which will make it much easier for competition participants to upload their photographs to Commons as an automated process. Please don't change the template structure, as we need to ensure that the templates are properly compatible with the WLM standards that are in use worldwide. The format will allow a bot automatically to collect the information and to put it into the international Monuments Database.

The data still needs the attention of local editors:

  • The "title" may need wikilinking to a suitable article name (whether we currently have that article or not). If there are several buildings in one street all of the wikilinks point at an article about the street; however each entry has a separate line in the list.
  • The "location" column looks and sorts better if just the parish or town is included (& wikilinked).
  • The "date completed" column sometimes has eg "C19" for 19th century, and "C1850" for c. 1850 when the date is uncertain - these need to be corrected manually.
  • The "grid ref & lat & long" (which is occasionally missing) may be given to 8 characters — only 6 (grid ref) or 5 (lat & long) are really needed.
  • Clicking on the "list entry number" should take you to the data sheet for that entry on the English Heritage database which can be checked if needed for details.
  • The image column should have a picture added if we already have a suitable image on Commons. (N.B. if you are going to be taking photos yourself for inclusion in the competition don't upload them until September)
  • References may be added according to normal WP practice.

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

Old maps and views of Bristol and the South-West

As you might have seen in the Signpost last week, there's currently a drive to go through the million 19th century images released by the British Library last year, and identify all the maps, with a view to their being georeferenced by BL volunteers, and then uploaded to Commons early next year. After the first week, over eight thousand new maps have been identified, with 40% of the target books looked at -- see the status page for the latest figures, and more information.

A part that may specifically interest this project is

c:Commons:British Library/Mechanical Curator collection/Synoptic index/England - South West

which currently shows pink templated links for 232 Flickr book pages still to be looked at for untagged maps, including a substatial section for Bristol and Clifton, under Gloucestershire. (Though there are lots of other parts of England, and indeed of the world, still to be looked through as well).

Any help looking through these would be very much appreciated -- as well as the maps (and ground plans) for tagging, you may well also find other interesting or useful non-map views that may be worth considering or uploading for articles on Bristol and elsewhere in the South-West. (If uploading, please use the ingestion template described here, which sets up some appropriate image templates and categories).

Portal:Bristol

I've made a start on bring Portal:Bristol up to modern (dynamic) standards. The selected article, biography and DYKs etc had been unchanged since I set it up in 2007. It now has a series for each of these sections (all FA, GA or have appeared on the main page as DYK) which will be different each time someone loads the page. (see Portal:Bristol/Selected article, Portal:Bristol/Selected biography and Portal:Bristol/Did you know for what I have included) I have also changed the category display from a static (non-updated) version from 2007 so now it is generated automatically.

I have a couple of requests for help: The picture of Gloucester Rd has been the same since 2007 - I can set up a changing picture, but what images should be included? (I would suggest not those already included in selected articles, biographies etc (see links above). Also the project "to do list" (Wikipedia:WikiProject Bristol/to do) is included - could you take a look and update/change htis as appropriate?

Project cleanup listing

I've just taken a look at the Clean up listing for WikiProject Bristol. It says that "Of the 1489 articles in this project 473 or 32% are marked for cleanup, with 766 issues in total". Many of these relate to articles where there are problems with referencing (including those about living people) but there are a whole range of errors. Would anyone be willing or able to try to fix any of these errors?— Rod talk 20:18, 5 October 2015 (UTC)

Some good progress has been made on this with the list now showing: "Of the 1501 articles in this project 266 or 18% are marked for cleanup, with 409 issues in total." With help from several editors (including Mattbuck working on stations) lots of the errors have been fixed. Would you be able to help with any of the others?
There are plenty more on the list (updated weekly) , but if anyone could take on one or two of these that would be great. (If it is one above using strikethough may help to avoid others starting to work on the same article at the same time.) I am hoping to get the total number of article showing errors down below 100 by the end of the year and any help would be appreciated.— Rod talk 15:27, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

Thanks to everyone who has helped with this. The cleanup list is now down to 130 articles (so 340 have been cleaned up). There will be one more update before the new year (on 29 December) and it would be great to get a few more resolved before then.

Further work on this has brought the total down "As of February 16, 2016. Of the 1570 articles in this project 85 or 5% are marked for cleanup, with 129 issues in total." Any further help with tackling some of these would be gratefully received.

Bristol city centre v The Centre, Bristol

I have just been looking at The Centre, Bristol and Bristol city centre. Could other readers find the similar titles confusing? There is some overlap but they do seem to significantly different so I wouldn't suggest merging the articles, but would be grateful for suggestions to help to disambiguate them.— Rod talk 21:53, 19 December 2015 (UTC)

Bristol will be TFA on the front page on 7 March

Following its promotion to "Featured Article" Bristol will appear on wikipedia's front page as "Today's Featured Article" (TFA) on 7 March (see Wikipedia:Today's featured article/March 7, 2016). This is likely to generate a lot of page views (and some vandalism). If anyone can help with monitoring this that would be great. The West Country Challenge

The West Country Challenge

The The West Country Challenge will take place from 8 to 28 August 2016. The idea ito create and improve articles about Bristol, Somerset, Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Dorset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire.

The format will be based on Wales's successful Awaken the Dragon which saw over 1000 article improvements and creations and 65 GAs/FAs. As with the Dragon contest, the focus is more on improving core articles and breathing new life into those older stale articles and stubs which might otherwise not get edited in years. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? The Great Britain/Ireland Destubathon

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

JK Rowling - relevant to this Wikiproject

Hello Wikiproject members!

I noticed that we're getting loads of notifications on this project about JK Rowling - a topic that it seemed obvious to me was out of scope of this Wikiproject, since she's not mentioned anywhere in the Bristol pages, and Bristol is not mentioned anywhere on her page, and I couldn't imagine how it would be useful to most members of this Wikiproject to be seeing notifications about issues with the JKR page.

I have therefore removed that page from the Wikiproject, to give us a more manageable and focussed set of notifications. However, that decision is being questioned, so please do say here if you have a strong feeling either way as to whether it's useful for JK Rowling, and notifications about that article, to be included in the Bristol Wikiproject.
