who's still active here?

?--Dangerous-Boy 17:23, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

I'm as active as I can be, and perhaps one of only a few. I did some cleanup on the Krishna article when it became the Collaboration of the Week (a few weeks ago). When I asked for help and feedback on several proposed edits to the Kali Yuga article, I received no responses. After a week, I made the changes I proposed. I've also proposed, on the Talk:Yoga page, a merging of the Contemporary Yogis, Yogi, and the yogis listed on Yoga page, into a new article - removing the overlapping lists of yogis on those pages. I would like some more feedback on my proposal here: Talk:Yoga#Notable_Yogis, before I start cutting and merging, but haven't received any yet. So, it doesn't seem that there are (m)any active people here. ॐ Priyanath 03:46, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

Hindu philosophy

An observation: We're doing a good job on articles related to popular mythology etc, but IMO ignoring articles related to Hindu Philosophy. Articles like Atman (Hinduism) need to improve a lot. Also, articles on philosophical texts like Viveka Chudamani need a lot of improvement. deeptrivia (talk) 02:00, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

Manavala Mamunigal

Hi, perhaps someone here could have a look at Manavala Mamunigal article? It makes no sense to me... -- Barrylb

it's going to lose it's status --D-Boy 20:43, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

think the real problem with the article is that its got a bit too big, fat and lazy for its own good. It's a real shame considering how much work D-Boy and others put in last year. Why is it that none of the other religions seem to have this problem.

I seriously recommend that we look at our piorites, I had a look at the featured articleslist, I was think perhaps it would be more appropiate to diversfy away from just trying to get Hinduism as a featured article. How about History of hinduism? Or Philosphy of hinduism? Major gods. There are so many different areas we can go. I'm not saying lets abandon [[hinduism], as our flagship article, but lets try something else for now, like the Krishna article, which may be more appropiate for us.

Just a thought, please let me know what you guys think!

I'm back, I'm back...

For those of you who have no clue who I am, I was one of the two or three original article writers (dare I say the main one) who took the Hinduism article to Featured Status back in 2004 or so. You can look on my profile page (I haven't changed it for years) to see other articles I was involved in, mostly related to Sanatana Dharma. I came back around 6 months later and was devastated. All the hard work I, and a few other stalwarts, had put into the Hinduism article, had been destroyed. Structure and aesthetic appeal of the 'essay,' ravaged. NPOV, gone. Any sense of a logical progression in discussion of topics, avoiding redundancy, wiped out. It was a mess, since demoted. I am reticent about rejoing Wikipedia, as I have since begun working with magazines, authors, and publishers writing my own, copyrighted works. But I feel bad that you guys are working so hard, putting your own stamp on Wikipedia, and I'm not helping out. If anyone has any projects that they'd like me to work on, or to help them out with, contribute to in any way, shape or form, whether in actual writing, or in research, please contact me. I just can't choose one or two articles to work on because there're so many articles I busted my ass on which are f-----d... my work on Dharma, Bhagavad Gita, Rta... shit... tell me what to do and I'll do it. I'm all of yours to command. LordSuryaofShropshire 14:07, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

If the articles have deteriorated as bad as you say (not checked personally!), you could revert it back to the version some years ago, and then slowly re-add any constructive edits since? Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 14:48, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Key articles for Wikipedia 1.0

Hello! We at the Work via WikiProjects team for Wikipedia 1.0 would like you to identify the "key articles" from your project that should be included in a small CD release due to their importance, regardless of quality. We will use that information to assess which articles should be nominated for Version 0.5 and later versions. Hopefully it will help you identify which articles are the most important for the project to work on. As well, please add to the Hinduism WikiProject article table any articles of high quality. If you are interested in developing a worklist such as this one (new) for your WikiProject, or having a bot generate a worklist like this one automatically for you, please contact us. Please feel free to post your suggestions right here. Thanks! Walkerma 04:37, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Hinduism in Afghanistan

Hi,

I just wanted to let you know that an anonymous editor has added "this is not true!!!!!!!!!! Hindus have been every time in Afghanistan. The Hindus in Afghanistan are desedants of Gandhara. Their language is Hindko. Hindko was spoken in Kabul, eastern Afghanistan and in nothen Pakistan. In 13th century Pakhtoon moved from South Afghanitan to eastern Afghanistan." to the article about Hinduism in Afghanistan. I have no idea which version is true, so I just added the {{Dispute}} tag. I hope you guys can fix the article because it doesn't look good the way it is right now.

Considering the plethora of saints and gurus within Hinduism, should we start a WikiProject about them? This would complement the current WikiProject on Hinduism and the current WikiProject on Saints. Any comments would be deeply appreciated. --Siva1979Talk to me 09:18, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Hinduism

My edits incorporating facts in article Hinduism have been removed by HeBhagwan. I am not happy at his removal of facts like branches of Vedas when the article is full of plenty of details about Hinduism. I am also not happy on his impression that my English is poor. I had modestly stated on this page yesterday that I would be happy to refine my edits as the article is well worded was met with comments by HeBhagwan that my English is poor.

It would have been appropriate if HeBhagwan would have improved the language if he felt so needed rather than removing facts incorporated by me.

If, no convincing explanation is given for reverting my edits, I will revert the article back to my edits of 4/10/06.

Interested editors pl. help.

Stubs proposals

{{Hindu-temple-stub}}, {{Hindu-theo-stub}}, {{Hindu-bio-stub}}

Please weigh in at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals/2006/October: The Category:Hinduism stubs is quite overpopulated and without a stub save for Category:Hindu mythology stubs. While about a 100-odd articles are difficult to classify (except as miscellaneous), the creation of these 3 stubs would considerably ease the burdens. The creation of a temple-stub would help subcategorize more than 70 stubs about temples, sites of worship, pilgrimage or religious significance. The Hindu theology stub aims to cover articles on (1) scriptures, (2) terms, hymns, ceremonies and (3) theological doctrines. I estimate close to 100 stubs can be fitted into this subcategory. The "Hindu-bio-stub" covers religious personalities, clergy, saints, teachers, etc. At the moment such a stub category can fit close to 70 stubs. It is important to note that over a hundred such stubs can be created in the future, so it does no harm to sanction this new stub - helps pre-empt the burden. Hello WikiProject Hinduism

Would you mind translating this for me?

BOOM BHOLENATH KASINATH KEDARNATH OM NAMAH SHIVAYAH

I believe it is Hindu because of the Om and Shiva... Psychomelodic User:Psychomelodic/me

You are right. It is a salutation to God in the form of Lord Shiva. Shiva is called "lord of the innocent, lord of the holy city of Kashi (now called Varanasi), and lord of Kedar (a place of pilgrimage in the Himalayas). "Boom" is a mystic syllable associated with Shiva. Om is an ancient mystic syllable with many meanings, but it always denotes something holy or spiritual. HeBhagawan 17:39, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

BKWSU Raja Yoga versus Classical/Patanjali Raja Yoga

Hi.

I have a problem here delineating what is classically known as Raja Yoga, e.g. Patanjali, Vivekananda etc and the spiritist practises used by the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University which involves meditating on the channelled entity or spirit they call Shiva after the Hindu God, the channelling of so-called "Shiva" through BK adherents, and the use of channelled messages spoken through their founder and current medium as the new "Gita".

Now, it is perfectly clear that what the BKs are teaching is entirely novel and the use of identical terminology is entirely confusing. But how to qualify this on the wiki? Unfortunately the Western academics demanded by other editors - whether sociological or Christian theologists - are entirely unqualified to comment on the differences.

  • Does anyone know if any experienced Hindu academics or yoga specialists have analysed the BKs and their practise?

Thank you. 195.82.106.244 15:48, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

My approach would be something like this:

The BK are a religious movement, etc. . . . According to BK publications, the BKs believe the following things: _____(cite BK's own publications here). They call their teachings "Raja Yoga, and are based on teachings can be found in ___________________(cite BK publications here for whatever they say they believe). Some outside the BK movement, however, have claimed that the BKs teachings are not actually in accord with what is classical Raja Yoga (cite the sources that have made these claims).

HeBhagawan 16:42, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

BK is definitely nowhere near a mainstream accepted Hindu org. They are at best "a cult of people with amazingly peculiar worldview".03:16, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

To add the child projects such as Hindu mythology, a customised plugin is required which User:Kingboyk makes upon request. Should I simply go ahead and tag all articles with the above tag or would you guys like to request him for the customised plugin? religioustolerance dot org

I came across over 700 links to this organization, Ontario Consultants on Religious Tolerance. The site has a ton of ads but on the other hand, it has content (and a Wikipedia article).

Normally, such an ad-intensive site with so many links gets attention at WikiProject Spam for further investigation. Even if it's not spam, many links may often get deleted as not meeting the external links guideline. I've left a note at WikiProject Spam asking others to look at some of these and see what they think.

Even some non-profit organizations will add dozens of links to Wikipedia since links in Wikipedia are heavily weighted in Google's page ranking systems. (If interested, see the article on Spamdexing for more on this).

You can see all the links by going to this this "Search web links" page. I encourage you to look at Wikipedia's external links guideline then look at the links in the articles you normally watch. Also, if you don't mind, please also weigh in at WikiProject Spam with your opinions. If you see links to pages that you don't think add additional value beyond the content already in an article, feel free to delete them, but please don't go mindlessly deleting dozens of links. (Per WP:EL, links that don't add additional value should be deleted but that doesn't necessarily mean they're "spam").

Thanks for your help and for providing some second opinions. --A. B. 17:07, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Saints/Godmen section

Is there a possibility of creating a separate section for Hindu saints/godmen who are undeniably a part of Hindu tradition? This would help most of the current articles to be categorised under a special set of rules afforded by the specialised section of the project. Tags and banners would need to be created for this purpose. Hopefully there will be enough consensus to give the green light to creating and expanding this new workgroup? Ekantik 01:29, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

Apology

Several hours ago I made an absolutely unforgivable error in judgement and posted a horrible demand at [W:INB]. In my statement, I poured salt into open wounds that India is trying desperately to heal from.

I am ashamed and sorrowed by my actions. I insulted the intelligence and compassion of Indians, Hindus, WikiProject India, and Wikipedians in general. By my very action, I've thrown shame on my own faith as well.

My actions were inexcusable. All that I can offer is the horrible shame I feel today. My dearest hope is that, in time, I can rebuild what I have broken through my actions and behavior.

Today, my solace is that I did not do what I had promised, and posted my lapse in faith and judgement here. It's a small solace, however, because many editors very rightly share these two projects.

For these editors, I post an apology here as well. For anyone who has not seen what I wrote, please, please, do not open Pandora's Box.

The current organization there is abit muddled, and needs some discussing how to deal with. I noticed that the creators of the articles related to the religion above did not see fit to include it in the Hinduism fold. Is it the opinions of the members of this project that it does qualify as a form of Hinduism, or should it be considered a separate religion entirely?
