Comment
[edit]A very thorough article, congratulations! In order to complete the bibliography you could add these two titles:
- Antarctic obsession : a personal narrative of the origins of the the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901-1904 / by Sir Clements Markham ; edited and introduced by Clive Holland. Alburgh, Harleston, Norfolk : Bluntisham Books : Erskine Press, 1986. xxv, 179 p. : ill. ; 23 cm. ISBN 0948285095.
- Francis Spufford. I May Be Some Time. Ice and the English Imagination. faber & faber 2003 [there is a good treatment of Markhams personality and achievement on p. 277ff of the paperback edition]
Dr Jostmann --91.113.14.27 (talk) 06:48, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you for your comment and suggestion. As neither of these books was used directly in the writing of the article, I have added them under a "Further reading" heading rather than as "Sources". Brianboulton (talk) 09:59, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
Huntford
[edit]I suppose the article should also address the claim by Roland Huntford (in The Last Place on Earth, p. 118 and 138) that Markham was gay.[1] If that is true it might certainly explain his stormy love/hate relationship with Shackleton. Morn (talk) 11:39, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
- Since Huntford offers no genuine evidence on Markham's sexual orientation (nor does anyone else), this is best left out as unsupported conjecture. Brianboulton (talk) 17:04, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
- And what is Historians have surmised that Scott was Markham's protegé, and that the old man resented polar glory going to someone else based on exactly? As far as I see, Huntford is at least quoting from Markham's diaries, so this is not some kind of baseless speculation.
- It's funny how some people suddenly become so hyper-critical of any evidence they'd like to ignore. And besides, the mission of Wikipedia is to report what researchers of good repute have been thinking, not what the author of an article does or doesn't like to hear about his pet subject—because the latter approach has been done to death on the 1911 Britannica with its single-author articles! Morn (talk) 18:28, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
- Is Robert Huntford a "researcher of good repute"? I am not so sure.

Family
[edit]I noticed that this article disagrees with the ODNB on Markham's mother's given name: the ODNB has Catherine, as do all the other sources I have found.
As far as I can see, David Markham married Catherine, daughter of Sir William Mordaunt Milner, 4th Baronet. Milner married twice, his first wife being Selina Clements[2]. Catherine was one of two children by the first marriage; there was a daughter Caroline by the second marriage, but she married someone else, according to peerage.com. Selina Clements was daughter of Theophilus Henry Clements, an Irish MP. In any case this explains how Clements became a family name.
I would suggest correcting Caroline to Catherine, on the strength of the ODNB, since it appears be a slip. Clements Markham was a great-grandson of William Markham, as is stated on the title page of the book he wrote about the Archbishop. So putting in the missing father of David Markham would also have some value. Charles Matthews (talk) 07:23, 18 June 2015 (UTC)
