Explanation

This was not "List of tall humans" for a reason. We do not have lists of merely "tall" things or beings. (List of tall ships is referring to a kind of ship not its height) In addition see the results of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of short men (2nd nomination). However "List of tallest" are allowed. A featured example of this is List of tallest buildings in Providence.--T. Anthony (talk) 11:00, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

Tallest NFL player

According to pro-football-reference.com, Richard Sligh--who played two games for the Oakland Raiders--stood 7 feet tall. That would put him ahead of Morris Stroud as tallest NFLer ever. The espn.com article used as the citation, incidentally, makes no mention of Stroud holding the NFL height record--just that he was 6'10". PeteF3 (talk) 02:13, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

Not a popularity contest

Please stop adding any tall guy you happen to like, even if they are notable for height. That is not the point of the list. If need be I'll remove all the "by profession" segments or see about protecting this. This is for tallest people not "tall people I think are really cool."--T. Anthony (talk) 21:35, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

Robert Pershing Wadlow

Mr. Wadlow should not be in the list of CURRENT LIVING people as he died in 1940. --DrJos (talk) 11:09, 2 September 2008 (UTC) He was also not 9' tall, he was 8' 11.1. See the Robert Wadlow wikipedia link for details.

Anyway, Wadlow was a true giant. I think he truly was 9' tall. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.172.170.26 (talk) 07:45, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

Confusion involving Richard Kiel

In this articel it says he is dead but in his main article and everywhere else I see no confirmation of this. Maybe it could be changed to tallest American actor still living as Matthew McGrory would be the tallest dead american actor to my knowladge. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.62.200.20 (talk) 21:36, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

Igor Vovkovinskiy

At 7'8" he's as tall as George Bell, so who is the tallest American? I remember reading about Igor Vovkovinskiy in my local paper years ago and was fascinated that at 6 years of age he was over 6 feet tall. I also find it interesting that he was flown to the US to have a growth removed from his pituitary as a charitable act by the Mayo Clinic, of whose employ he is now in.

I've been wondering for years what ever happened to this "Pituitary Giant" and now I'm more intrigued than ever to find out that he's a US citizen doing Tech Support for the Mayo clinic. For me he's a Notable Name and a contender for the tallest living US citizen, if not the US citizen with the biggest feet. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.226.138.145 (talk) 20:58, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Well if he is notable, write the article first. Then after you have an article that meets the notability requirements for biographies add him back into the article. A new name 2008 (talk) 22:31, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
That's a tricky catch-22. If he's only notable because of his height, then it could be argued that he doesn't deserve his own article. But if he doesn't have an article then he won't get on this list, in spite of shorter individuals being listed? He is notable for his role in the Obama campaign, however - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dB5OVdgIOc  — 86.1.163.237 (talk) 21:27, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

Who's the tallest person not suffering from a pituitary disorder? Dynzmoar (talk) 12:37, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

Touch the Clouds. Great Gall (talk) 17:53, 28 November 2008 (UTC)
Traditionally Angus MacAskill is listed as the tallest person without a pituitary or other condition. I might add Martin Van Buren Bates. True the list of people with gigantism, and the category, list him as having gigantism. However he lived into his 80s and, so far as I know, was never diagnosed with a disorder. I'm thinking it's just convenient to place him as having gigantism as there is no denial of it the way there is for MacAskill.--T. Anthony (talk) 04:32, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
I think also Bao Xishun has no disorder? Also the wrestler Jorge González (wrestler) was measured in the 2000 silver Guinness at 7'6, not 7'7.Halbared (talk) 17:14, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

Pier Gerlofs Donia was the tallest (self declared) monarch, standing at 7 ft 5, and thus I added the last king of Fryslan to the list. -The Bold Guy- (talk) 16:15, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

But what is he doing on the "Tallest living in various nations" list? Also, his article makes it perfectly clear that there's no conclusive evidence on his exact height. --Anshelm '77 (talk) 16:11, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
Greate Pier is a half-legendary person. There are no reliable records of his body lenght and his grave is unknown, so no measurements of his skeleton are possible. Therefore this interesting hero of Frisian folklore has no place in the list of tallest people and certainly not with a defined length, because that can only be conjecture. I have already removed him once. This is after all an encyclopedia and not a nationalist playground. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Paaskynen (talkcontribs) 07:09, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

Richard Kiel in Actors section

I would like to add that Richard Kiel is not even listed in the actors section of the list of tallest people. Your wikipedia page on him lists his height as this: 7 feet 1.5 inches (2.18 m) tall. That puts him taller than other actors listed. He should be listed.Jon (talk) 02:12, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

He is not the tallest actor, or the tallest american actor thoughHalbared (talk) 10:26, 2 June 2009 (UTC)
No he is not the tallest actor. But that is not what that section is about. it is titled "tallest actors". Richard Kiel is taller than most of the actors listed. How can they be put in that list and not him? In that short list only two actors are taller than Richard Kiel.Jon (talk) 13:26, 2 June 2009 (UTC)
I added Richard Kiel to the Tallest Actors section of the page. He is marked as tallest actor in a television show.Jon (talk) 01:59, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

How is it that Richard Kiel was removed from the Tallest Actors list? He is taller than all of the actors in that section except Matthew McGrory and Peter Mayhew. Why allow actors shorter than Richard Kiel to be in the list, yet exclude him?Jon (talk) 03:42, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

The shorter actors have the notability of being nominated or winning major awards, and achievement given their large stature. It's not just a list of tall actors or it would be flooded, like the main list. And there are other actors taller than Kiel that have been in television.Halbared (talk) 07:11, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Brenden Adams

There is an American teenager named Brenden Adams who is apparently on pace to become taller than Robert Wadlow. Even though he isn't yet one of the tallest people, I think it is definitely worth a mention in this article somewhere. He is at least the tallest 13 year old in medical history. :P

Improving the list- input needed!

I think the idea of this list is good, but as of now there are no real criteria of who should be on the list and who shouldn't. While it isn't terrible in its current state, I'd like to come up with some rules to help editors maintain this list. I'll give my thoughts on this but would love for some feedback so that we can come up with something that interested editors can agree on.

1. ALL entries on this list need a good reference. ANY entry without a good reference will be deleted. Given the nature of this list I think Guinness should be the gold standard, but other references can be used if Guinness doesn't have the info. 1a. For the general list of tallest people the reference needs to have their height. 1b. For any qualified list (i.e. tallest in various sports, tallest actors, tallest people per country, etc.) a reference not only giving the height but ALSO stating that this is the tallest person in that category is necessary.

2. Consistency is needed on units of measurement. Right now some sections use feet and inches and others use centimeters. Since most of the world uses the metric system I suggest that centimeters be the first measurement listed. I think putting feet and inches in parentheses is a good idea since it is helpful to Americans.

3. People in the first section of the article (tallest men and women) should only be on the list if they are truly one of the absolute tallest people known. I think some sort of cutoff is needed. How about 230cm. (approximately 7'7") for males and 215cm. (around 7'0") for women. These numbers are pretty arbitrary (off the top of my head) and I'm VERY open to discussion here. My feeling is to start off with cutoffs around there and adjust as necessary (if the list is too long raise the cutoff, if the list is too short then lower the bar). On a related note, anyone known for being the tallest "insert profession, nationality, etc." but otherwise not the tallest of the tall should be on the appropriate list in the second half of the article, not in the top section.

4. The categories and subcategories in the second half of the article need to be reasonable or the list will keep getting taller than average people that someone likes and finds a way to shoehorn on the list. It will be nearly impossible to create hard and fast rules here, but, for example, creating entries that need multiple descriptors like "tallest comedy actor", "tallest Croatian basketball player" really shouldn't be there. I guess I would say that if the entry opens up the possibility of expanding the list to dozens if not hundreds of nearly identical entries (e.g. tallest basketball player from the USA, India, Kenya, Thailand, etc.) it shouldn't be there. For the previous example I would say that at most the tallest living basketball player and tallest ever basketball player could be listed.

Sorry this is so long, but if we don't come up with some sort of rules/criteria then this list will remain a random list of "tall" people rather than a meaningful list of the "tallest" people in the world. Please give me some feedback on these ideas. I'm not an expert on this subject, I just stumbled across this article and felt it really needed some guidelines. Mantisia (talk) 23:29, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

I definitely favor that every name be verified. I think I originally intended a fairly or at least moderately strict standard. Although I did include actors and sports from the start, which in retrospect was maybe a mistake. A part of me would like to keep something on the absolute tallest actor and actress, if known, but it's not essential. I'd be okay with restricting the list to people over eight-foot (245 cm), tallest living, and tallest by nation.--T. Anthony (talk) 01:40, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

Joseph Borenstein

It seems as if Shawn Bradley( Dallas Mavericks, among other teams) was left off the list. His height was documented @ 7'6, however Yao is only 7'5", but since Yao is a worldwide phenomemon, people like to exaggerate a bit on his height. Also omitted was Pavel Pozkolvin who was 7'4". He recently spent several seasons in the NBA as well. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.161.131.190 (talk) 16:27, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

Yao might be taller, especially as height can diminish with age, but this is far from confirmed. In addition the claim she's taller was unsourced and done by anonymous IPs. I've found sources that say she is taller, but they're mostly blogs and one uncertain Chinese site. In a case like this Chinese sites might be unreliable. By the same token I'll try to look for non-US sites on Allen.--T. Anthony (talk) 20:47, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

She was in the original version and on March 9 she was in the over eight-foot section. However in every tall/tallest list people seem to remove her. I don't know if it's because of her scoliosis or her failure to be either European or American. (There's a bit of a Americentric/Eurocentric thing on Wikipedia)--T. In the top of the page, Daniel Gilchrist is listed as Tallest actor at 7'7" (231.6 cm), but does not have a linking page. In the top of the page, Matthew McGrory is listed as Second tallest actor at 7'6" (229 cm) when he died. In the Actors section, Matthew McGrory is listed as Tallest actor at 7'6" (229 cm) when he died. Is Daniel Gilchrist actually taller than Matthew McGrory? John F. Carroll is listed as being "244 cm / 8 ft 7 in". However, 244cm is about 8' 0", which was his normal standing height. His height assuming normal spine curvature was 264cm or 8' 7.75". Depending on whether his normal standing height should be used or his apparently stretched height, either his height in cm needs to be changed to 264cm, or his height in feet/inches needs to be changed for 244cm to 8' 0" (in both the ranking column and in the Note column), which would also result in his ranking needs to be moved downward several spots. If somebody has a good reason why they should not be ordered that way, then we'll discuss it here on the talk page, and not engage in an edit war. ... discospinster talk 16:13, 26 November 2010 (UTC)
Fedors page acknowledges that the larger height for him is exaggerated, from the source it quotes. The source for Middleton places 9'3 as the accepted height, whether you think either man was not really that tall is your opinion. I looked at the sources and one of them acknowledges Fedor's height was exaggerated, hence the edit.Halbared (talk) 18:12, 26 November 2010 (UTC)
The point is that neither of the heights are verified. Even if Machnow's is acknowledged to be exaggerated, that is how he was billed. Similarly, Middleton was thought by some to be nine foot three, but also possibly less than eight feet.[1] He was never "accepted" to be nine foot three. Since we don't know for sure whether either of them were really nine foot three, but they were each claimed to be so, they might as well be put in alphabetical order. ... discospinster talk 19:30, 26 November 2010 (UTC)

"Tallest people average height and height record"

Autochthony, unimpressed, writes: It is far from clear what this - table? - actually represents - or is supposed to represent. I note no entry for the tallest jockey, gymnast, or diver above; these, generally being neat and rather short sportsfolk, would bring the quoted 'average' down a bit. Shortest claim for disputed and unverified - Birriel. Shortest?[??]!? Add my claim to be 1.890 metres tall. That, I fear, is not only disputable [I've told nobody about it, but they'll laugh] - it is certainly unverified; it is, also, at par with that whole table. Comparing apples and stools, moonbeams and earthpigs, with no quality check or anything useful added. Could it be homework for MS Excel 101 - an exercise for third-graders? Thinking about it, it reminds me of the - was it an anecdote? - told by Richard Feynmann, about a maths textbook setting an execise where pupils had to add the temperatures of stars [4000K plus 5500K plus 6500K plus 7000K equals 23000K, or similar]. The above comment is mostly disagreeable and inapplicable. But, one thing this article does lack is context. We really need a (separate, linked) list which shows average height of people by culture and time period. For instance I was amazed when I took a tour of an old English sailing ship at how small the beds were, it wasn't just that they scrunched themselves up to fit, the people really were that small. When I look at my grandmothers generation, people were generally much shorter than they are now. I also saw this very clearly with Japanese immigrants, the parents short and with thin bones == fragile, their teenage son towering over them and built like a football player. Clearly a lot of this has to do with diet, but I can't help wondering if there are other factors. The thing is though that if you are 4.5 feet tall and looking at someone who is 6 feet, it is easy to describe 6 feet as very tall and 7 feet as a giant. But if the average height is 6 feet then 6 feet is not tall, it is average, and 7 feet is not giant. It is all about the context in which the size of the person is perceived. But without a list of the average heights of people, we have no context for the definition of a "giant". I'm 6 feet and I do encounter a lot of people who are shorter then I am and sometimes I do feel a bit like a giant by comparison, especially among asians. But on the other hand I have met some football types who make me feel both short and small by comparison to them. The perception of who is a Giant is relative to what people consider normal size. Goliath for instance may have only been around 6 feet tall -- by today's standards, that's nothing at all, but if you are only 4 feet tall, than someone who is two feet taller and built like a tank is going to make quite an impression. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.35.126.146 (talk) 03:59, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

Since this page has a listing for disputed or unverified claims, I found it acceptable to include the documented bones found at the Neolithic necropolis of Castelnau-le-Lez in 1890 by Georges de Lapouge. His estimate of the height of the person when living was about 3,50 meters, and his find was published in the science journal "La Nature" vol. 18, 1890 and reported in other science journals and News Papers, including the London Globe and NY Times. The bones were examined at the University of Montpellier by the eminent professors of anatomy, zoology, and paleontology and they all believed the bones to be human. Paul Kiener, professor of pathological anatomy examined the bones and conceded they belonged to "a very tall race", although he believed the growth to be abnormal. There are other reports from Montpellier and south France, as well as the Pyrenees of North Spain which allege the bones of similar sized persons dating to an ancient period were found. That the bones at Castelnau were human seems to have not been disputed by those who examined them at the time, but the estimates for stature does seem to be disputed. Some reports put the estimate at 3 meters, while others at 3,50 meters.

I see no reason why this claim should be deleted from the list unless this page is only intended for persons who lived into modern or industrial historic periods, which will inevitably preclude a lot of ancient tall people to be sure. --75.175.68.173 (talk) 04:11, 21 December 2010 (UTC)

To those who continue to delete this sourced entry: please explain your reasons. ... discospinster talk 17:01, 31 December 2010 (UTC)

In an archeology magazine there was an article about the Giants of Ohio Valley. They apparently were similar to what is described for Castelnaau-le-Lez. Unfortunately that article is no longer available online, it would be great if someone could track this down. Also there was the the story by Magellen? about their encounter with a Giant in Patagonia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.35.126.146 (talk) 03:34, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

Yes there are hundreds, if not thousands of reports of reputed giants bones, often between 7 and 12 feet tall. These are largely unconfirmed or simply have not been independently investigated from the date they were first reported. If anyone can find a reference to large human bones which are documented in a peer reviewed journal of science, as is the case with the Castelnau bones, that would greatly expand this article. With the million years of human, and Hominid forms inhabiting this planet, it would seem likely that many other tall people can be added to this list providing accurate measurements and descriptions of the bones are described by credible scientific or medical sources. This would also greatly expand our knowledge of human height limitations. There are groups such as the Guinness Book of World Records, which keep tabs on the tallest people, but they have a limited staff and are most likely not going to take the time to look through catalogs, and reports of large human bones found by archaeologists over the past 150 years. That is what makes wikipedia so great. --184.100.154.17 (talk) 23:59, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

The length of Leonid Stadnyk

Leonid Stadnyk, the ukrain giant, is really about 2,50 metre (8,4 feet) tall. The gigantism expert Michael Besser has medical measured Stadnyk in the year 2006. Stadnyk had then through pressure of the press to measure itself.

What with the credible length from 7,6 feet through photographs: particularly througth the perspektive, you might not to bank on photographs alone. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.7.103.4 (talk) 19:48, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

Stadnyk's metric height was previously listed incorrectly as 2.31m under the "Men" heading, and as 2.59m under the "Disputed and unverified claims" heading. [1] (see source on linked page) lists him as 2.57, which is the most reasonable measurement that exists since it corresponds to his alleged Ukrainian Book of Records measurement. His height under both headings has now been changed to 2.57m. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.56.239.10 (talk) 20:58, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

Adding mass murderers to this article

Hello. My aim is to add mass murderers such as Osama bin Laden to this article. Osama bin Laden is between 6'4" and 6'6". You can read that on the main article of Osama bin Laden. Why is my request to do so not accepted? Please vote. Samhan Dobo (talk) 11:28, 21 March 2015 (UTC)

Do you have a source stating that bin Laden was the tallest mass murderer? Or even one suggesting that his height is in any way of significance? AndyTheGrump (talk) 12:08, 21 March 2015 (UTC)
Although a highly subjective list, the people listed are notable because of height. A section/table of one is also not appropriate.--☾Loriendrew☽ (talk) 17:10, 21 March 2015 (UTC)
I might have a source for that because if you think of Napoleon, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Saddam Hussein and so on. No mass murderer of them was more than 6'2". Osama bin Laden stood almost 6'6" and that is tall enough to give a proof that he was the tallest mass murderer. Samhan Dobo (talk) 23:10, 21 March 2015 (UTC)
All you are proving is that he was tall. There's no reliable source that I can find stating that he was the tallest mass murderer. ... discospinster talk 01:41, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
Yes, you might not find a source but think of all the mass murderers. Which mass murderer was ever at a height of almost 6'6"? Tell me one except Osama bin Laden. Samhan Dobo (talk) 16:30, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
The rule on Wikipedia is that if you add information on Wikipedia, it needs to be accompanied by a reliable source. Therefore, if you want to add a list of mass-murderers' heights, you need a source for each person specifying their height- Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia so estimates aren't good enough. Also, you need to clarify who clarifies as a mass-murderer (everyone who killed more than 10,000 people, or everyone who's killed more than 100, or everyone who's killed than 10). Joseph2302 (talk) 17:37, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
You will also need sources which suggest that the height of mass murderers is in any way significant. The tallest people overall are frequently discussed, and it is likewise a frequent topic concerning sportspersons. But amongst mass murderers? Who says that it matters> We don't gather random data for no discernible reason. Next, someone will want to include the tallest bus drivers, or pencil-sharpener salesmen. This is an encyclopaedia, not a dustbin of random facts. AndyTheGrump (talk) 17:43, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

Yasutaka Okayama - wrong height listed?

The first table lists him as 7'5" and 3/4, but he's generally known to be 7'8" (http://www.nba.com/draft2003/draft_oddities_030619.html). Generally, he's thought to be the tallest player ever drafted to the NBA; this would be inconsistent with his height being just under 7'6" when both Manute Bol and Gheorge Muresan (who both played in the NBA) were 7'6". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1.36.193.42 (talk) 09:06, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

I went to change it based on two sources, but then the original source, (http://www.thetallestman.com/yasutakaokayama.htm) has him at 7'6" or just under. I think more concensus would be needed before changing it, or something more well documented.--☾Loriendrew☽ (talk) 18:52, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

Tallest living man in India

The article currently lists:

  • Asadulla Khan, 241 cm, as "Tallest man in India"
  • Polipaka Gattaiah, 234 cm, as "Tallest living Indian"
  • Dharmendra Pratap Singh, 229 cm, as "Tallest Living Indian"

Clearly they can't all be the tallest living Indian; only Khan appears to rightfully hold the title and the other claimants' claims can be dismissed, and the sources cited for them are by all appearances mistaken (sloppy research?). --Florian Blaschke (talk) 01:49, 10 November 2015 (UTC)

This is a list of the tallest people to be measured and verified, living and dead.

As the list progresses downwards, the criteria for inclusion seems to vary, and the list ceases to be a 'list of the tallest' people. Should the main list be renamed? Should the list of tallest in each nation be blended into the main list?Halbared (talk) 11:11, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

Who's the person inventing the false data over Maximinus Thrax???

So, here we have the actual quote from Codex Palatinus 899:

"Erat praeterea, ut refert Cordus, magnitudine tanta, ut octo pedes digito videretur egressus, pollice ita vasto, ut uxoris dextrocherio uteretur pro anulo"

It translates to him being considered as at least 8 (Roman) feet and 1 (Roman) finger, that would roughly translate to 239-240cm.

Another Lectio exists, often being considered as less correct, stating 8 feet and 6 fingers (roughly 248cm).

Nowhere in the original source is Maximinus Thrax reported as "8 feet, 6 inches" and I have no clue why would someone vandalise this page AND Maximinus page too by constantly adding this HOAX to a Wikipedia page, actively contradicting what is Academically held to be correct and thus spreading false informations through Wikipedia pages.

Please stop. I apologise if my edit on the page are not 100% correct in style, I'd probably need help from someone more experienced in editing, but tha data I'm fixing should have been fixed way before I pointed it out. Kanjar (talk) 04:55, 26 June 2020 (UTC)

Oh, I am sincerely sorry, I thought since we don't have a data in British Feet and Inches it would be more appropriate to state the actual original quote, now I understand why my edit was considered strange.
