Maximinus Thrax Wikipedia Hoax
PLEASE stop vandalizing Maximinus Thrax reported height from the Historia Augusta: he was not said to be 8ft 6in tall, this is a HOAX spreaded by some wild edits on its Wikipedia page but was never actually confirmed by the actual quote from the Historia Augusta, that reports instead 8 Roman feet and one roman finger in height, as anyone can confirm by reading the actual source instead of referring to Wikipedia and ALTERING what the source text said. Kanjar (talk) 05:40, 25 June 2020 (UTC)
- Is the source online?Halbared (talk) 09:05, 25 June 2020 (UTC)
Hi Halbared, I hope I am utilising this Talk tool right since I am clearly not adept at using it and I already got a bunch of warning because by trying to fix wrong data and do good it seems I inadvertently did a couple of wrong things. I already replied in great detail down here but I want to specificaly reply here to you too and I want to add this link too since you were asking for an internet link: https://la.wikisource.org/wiki/Historia_Augusta/Maximini_Duo and, then again:
"[VI] 8 Erat praeterea, ut refert Cordus, magnitudine tanta, ut octo pedes digito videretur egressus, pollice ita vasto, ut uxoris dextrocherio uteretur pro anulo."
In Imperial Units it would translate to 7ft 10in (Latin "pes" -here is "pedes" because of declension- being considered/reconstructed as probably 29,64cm and latin "digitus" being considered/reconstructed at roughly 1,85cm being 1/16 of a "pes"). Of course no ancient source would state Maximinus height in Imperial Units (I won't even discuss that since it would imply talking in a jesting fashion but a Moderator told me to avoid making jokes in Talk, I'm sorry about it). I want to stress that here in this source, and I apologise if you can read Latin and don't actually need a translation, here this source tells us "8 feet 1 finger" (digito is a singular case).
Another Lectio, regarded as a variation and as a Lectio minor (and I believe it is in fact reported in critical editions!), reports "sex digitis" instead of "digito" and would translate to "6 fingers" instead of "1 finger".
So:
- -the Lectio maior would translate to something shy of 239cm (238,97cm but then again the latin text suggests that "people held him to be OVER/TOPPING 8[roman] feet and 1[roman] finger";
- -the Lectio minor would be translated to something over 248cm (248,22cm).
NOWHERE the word "uncia" (inch) is used, so no actual source talks of "8 foot 6 inches"! By the way an "uncia" would be 1/12 of a "pes" and you would be right guessing the english "inch" comes from latin "uncia": in fact the two are almost the same in measure and even in pronunciation if we refer to a late Latin pronunciation.
I hope this answer will clear my case, I apologise if I inadvertently modified something in the wrong way: it was not my intention, I am here to help but while being prepared on the matter I am not well-aware about Wikipedia editing etiquette.Kanjar (talk) 06:35, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
- There are many sources that say that he was claimed to be 8 foot 6 inches (or at least over 8 feet tall). So it's not a Wikipedia "hoax". ... discospinster talk 15:49, 25 June 2020 (UTC)
The source is in Vatican, Codex Palatinus 899 and published in some hundred of thousands of different copies from different editions and VASTLY discussed over the centuries. And it is online too, of course.
Actual quote:
"Erat praeterea, ut refert Cordus, magnitudine tanta, ut octo pedes digito videretur egressus, pollice ita vasto, ut uxoris dextrocherio uteretur pro anulo"
It calls for 8 feet, 1 Finger (not inch!); Roman feet is to be considered as somewhere around 29,6/29,7 cm and Roman Finger was about 1,85 centimeter. So we are talking of a figure around 239-240cm, NOT 260cm ;)
While it would be true that another Lectio would call for 8 (Roman!) feet and 6 Fingers (not inches!), it is for starters not the Lectio considered as the most acceptable and most widely held to be the oldest and most correct and then again it would anyway be referring to Roman measures that would translate to roughly 248cm, so please HELP me correctly editing this page (sadly I'm not that good with editing Wikipedia) instead of reverting this edit Kanjar (talk) 05:03, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
I'm ba Historian of course and Academically speaking everyone at either History or Classical Letters department would laugh at that Latin text being translated as either "8 feet 6 inches" or as "260cm" because it would look as anti-historical as a picture of a Neanderthal shooting Dinosaurs with his trusty Colt Peacemaker... Joseph Edouard Beaupre was born on 9th January, 1881 in Willow Bunch, Saskatchewan. He was 8'3 tall and weighed 375 lbs. He was a giant of the 'pituitary' type and was known as the 5th tallest giant. During his short adult life, Beaupre was employed by a circus, and attracted attention by his feats of strength. Edward Beaupre died on 3rd July, 1904, in St Louis, Missouri, U.S.A., at the age of 23 yr. His body is embalmed in the Department of Anatomy, University of Montreal. After more than half a century it still has a fairly normal appearance. The body now measures 7' 1 3/8 in height. The reduction is mainly due to a loss in thickness of both the intervertebral discs and the articular fibrocartilage of the lower limbs to a point where, on radiographic examination, they are no longer evident. Trijntje Keever
Should Trijntje Keever not be added to this list, since she was 260 cm long, longer then the female who holds the current #1 position? I don't see at this moment no reason why she should not be added to the list. Amelie poulain (talk) 22:19, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

Measurements and consistency
Apart from the "Tallest in varied sports" section, all the measurements are in feet and inches. Only one nation measures peoples heights in imperial units (the USA), the rest use Metric units (the UK included - height is measured in centimetres in medical records).
I propose a change that all heights on this page are displayed either in centimetres or metres, not a mix of both with imperial units in brackets to make the page universal.

Gigantism list
Is there a point to having this this list along with the main list, it seems arbitrary and random in adding some historical people.Halbared (talk) 09:30, 11 December 2021 (UTC)
- Does anyone object to the removal of the giantism list, since the list is basically a rehash of the main list as 'giantism' means over seven feet in height?Halbared (talk) 01:05, 17 December 2021 (UTC)
- No one has commented. I have removed the duplicate list. Not sure why it would have been added as it repeats the same info, unless gigantism was confused for acromegaly which is not germane to a page about height anyway.Halbared (talk) 11:34, 26 December 2021 (UTC)
- Well, you waited for 9 days and there were no objections. I agree there should be no duplication, but gigantism does not mean just "over seven feet in height". It's a distinct medical condition. As is acromegaly (I also don't see why acromegaly is not germane here). So it could be argued that examples of both of these belong in a separate list. At the very least, I'd suggest it would be useful of have both of these terms explained in the lead section. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:05, 26 December 2021 (UTC)

- Did you check the sources you cited? The sources are generally poor quality with at least one stating that his height was exaggerated (one of the better sources as well). So we would have to assess the sources for and against the claim of his billed height and come to consensus as to whether to include him. Due to the fact the world of wrestling is infected with hyperbole it is difficult to see how any of those linked to the sport are reliable for his height (although may be reliable for other aspects of pro-wrestling) Robynthehode (talk) 18:06, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
- As I said, considering we have an entire section on "Unverified, disproven, or heavily disputed claims", I'm suprised there aren't enough sources to include him. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:11, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
- That section is likely contrary to the verifiability requirement of Wikipedia WP:V. So it should be discussed as to why there is that section at all. Rather than adding more strongly disputed entries with poor sourcing their should be a discussion about removing that section and improving the sources for the rest of the article. Good Morning, I noticed that that section is so bad, for example there are people who are on list of tallest but also on disputed and unverified claims, also there are many people who got exposed for example jintera sigh who claimed to be 8 ft 2 but was measured at 7 ft 6, how is tat possible to him be really 8 ft 2? Also another claim siah khan ibn kashmir khan who claimed to be extremly tall, over 11 ft! but when he went to hospital it turned he was 7 ft 3 in... Column for Gigantism
In skimming this article, I was thinking it would be great to have a filter for a column so that people with Gigantism could be filtered out or at least recognized. I understand from the edit history two pages were combined; this seems like a reasonable thing to avoid losing information.
I'm tied up this week but could do some work on it if I had access, but honestly haven't edited much on Wikipedia.

André René Roussimoff height
André René Roussimoff, stage name "Andre the Giant", was not 7"4' and there is no credible evidence to support this claim. In the same way that his real name is not "Andre the Giant", his real height is not 7"4'. It is very, very well known that the billed heights and weights of professional wrestlers are exaggerated to build a character for the show. The reference provided is for the character Andre the Giant, not for the real man André René Roussimoff, therefore the link is not supporting evidence. 2A02:2F00:210D:A000:B1FA:349E:F53B:1512 (talk) 17:23, 26 January 2024 (UTC)

Number of people known to be 8 foot tall
As I go down the list of tallest people, several of the articles say something along the lines of "one of X people in medical history known to be taller than 8 feet". The problem is that X is different in various articles and that is obviously a problem! The issue, I believe, is that some people on this list are marked as having a disputed height, even though that height was definitely more than 8 feet (e.g. Hồ Văn Trung), but others have a disputed height and might not have been 8 feet after all (e.g. Leonid Stadnyk). I think two things need to happen:
1. The list here needs to be clear about whether someone was definitively taller than 8 foot, with the exact height being unknown, or whether someone may not have been 8 foot tall after all. I suggest that the "Height disputed" colour needs to be split, further, into two colours, so that this distinction is clear.
2. Once that is done, this article should include the final number - whatever it is - and then all the "sub" articles can be updated accordingly.
I am happy to do this work as long as people agree with me about what needs to be done. Thoughts please? FillsHerTease (talk) 11:47, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
