Hungarian name

[edit]

Should the Hungarian name for the basin be really included in the article? It is located in northern Slovakia, is a name of a basin (not a town or a person born before 1918) and the population of ethnic Hungarians living in the basin is very close to 0 (that is around 10 out of roughly 100.000 inhabitants of the basin, i.e about 0,01% by my reckoning)? There have recently been reverts on the topic, looking like a potential start of a revert war, which, in my opinion, should be prevented at all costs, so why not discuss the changes here?

After a discussion at User_talk:Elonka/Hungarian-Slovakian_experiment the position is that the Hungarian name should be included as per WP:NCGN. The reason is that a substantial Hungarian minority lived in the area as of 1910 (according to this source: [[1]]). For the same reason the German and Latin name (it used to be the official language) should be included (as per the suggestion of user 195.98.14.132.) —Preceding unsigned comment added by PeterRet (talkcontribs) 15:59, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There is no source that those names are relevant (see Google search). The discussion at User_talk:Elonka/Hungarian-Slovakian_experiment was just a discussion; a guideline was not passed.--Svetovid (talk) 18:29, 28 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No citation needed per WP:NCGN, so please remove those tags. Squash Racket (talk) 18:43, 28 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WP:NCGN is obviously under WP:CITE in the hierarchy.--Svetovid (talk) 19:40, 28 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I am unaware of anything at WP:NCGN which says that sources are not required. In any case, WP:V trumps all. If information is challenged, it requires a source. --Elonka 20:21, 28 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WP:NCGN:

Relevant foreign language names (one used by at least 10% of sources in the English language or is used by a group of people which used to inhabit this geographical place) are permitted and should be listed in alphabetic order of their respective languages

Svetovid, if "WP:NCGN is obviously under WP:CITE in the hierarchy", then this applies to all articles in Wikipedia, not just this one. Squash Racket (talk) 03:17, 29 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"then this applies to all articles in Wikipedia" - That is the argument I was making from the beginning. Good to see that you finally understand it.--Svetovid (talk) 13:28, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As there are no citations anywhere else on Wikipedia for alternative names (being based on common sense) then the "if" clause doesn't seem to work. I hope you finally understand it. Squash Racket (talk) 14:23, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Lajos Kossuth's father seems to have come from Turóc county for example. Squash Racket (talk) 03:34, 29 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

...and?--Svetovid (talk) 13:28, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I know he came from a mixed, Hungarian-Slovak environment. That's not so important though as Markussep already provided population data for both the German and the Hungarian minorities of the region. Squash Racket (talk) 14:23, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
