The Singles Chart is a weekly record chart based on single sales from Sunday to Saturday; during the 1990s, a total of 84 singles reached number one. The most successful artist of the 1990s was Canadian singer Céline Dion, who topped the Singles Chart for 52 weeks with nine different singles. Her 1997 song "My Heart Will Go On", from the motion picture Titanic, was the biggest-selling single of the decade; it spent 18 non consecutive weeks at the top of the chart during the 1990s, and it is the best selling single in music history. The first number-one single of the 1990s was "Another Day in Paradise" by Phil Collins - released in 1989, first reached number one in December, and remained at the top for five consecutive weeks. The final number one of the decade was "Dov'è l'amore (Emilio Estefan Jnr. Mix)" by American singer and actress Cher.

"My Heart Will Go On" (1997) by Canadian singer Céline Dion, from the motion picture Titanic was the biggest-selling single of the decade; it spent 18 consecutive weeks at the top of the chart during the 1990s, and it is also the best-selling single in music history. Her 1993 single "The Power of Love" is the fourth best seller.
American entertainer Cher scored the second best-selling single of the decade with "Believe" (1998) which spent 15 consecutive weeks at the top spot. Cher also had the most entries in the top 20 best-selling singles chart with three: "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)", from the 1990 movie Mermaids and the 1989 single "If I Could Turn Back Time".
"(Everything I Do) I Do It for You" (1991) by Canadian singer Bryan Adams, from the 1991 motion picture Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves is the third best-selling single of the decade and the best-selling by a male act.
"Macarena" by Spanish duo Los del Río is the fifth best-selling single of the decade, the best-selling released by a group and the best-selling non-English language song of the 1990s.
American singer and dancer Michael Jackson reached number one with eight different releases, more than any other artist during the decade.
American singer and songwriter Madonna scored the eight best-selling single with the 1990 song "Vogue", from the movie Dick Tracy; it is also the fourth best seller released by female artist.
The 1997 charity single "Something About the Way You Look Tonight" / "Candle in the Wind 1997" by English musician Elton John, dedicated to the memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, became the fastest-selling single in history and the 12th best seller of the 1990s.
