Tutte

[edit]

Hello. I'm doing a little work on Sebastiano Serlio and have an Italian question you might care to answer: Probably the most usual title of his work is Tutte l'opere d'architettura et prospetiva (although there seems to be a little variation in the spelling). The literal translation of this title is of course "All the works on architecture and perspective", which is what we're using now. My assumption is that "Complete works on architecture and perspective" would be more correctly idiomatic English, but I don't know Italian. My sources don't actually translate this exact title. Care to weigh in? Phil wink (talk) 16:59, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I'll keep it as it stands. Phil wink (talk) 21:43, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I can only defer to Hart & Hicks. If they're just making stuff up, then I've been much deceived. As you can see, the title "Tutte l'opere d'architettura et prospetiva" forms part of the title of their edition. I have triple-checked the spelling, and "prospetiva" appears consistently within this work with a single "t". Presumably Italian spelling has changed over the centuries. The reason H&H use this title is that no consistent title for the whole was supplied by Serlio, and the Venice editions of 1584, 1600, and 1618-19 (I trust you don't consider these to be Anglophone sources) use this title... also I presume because describing 9 books on architecture as I sette libri di architettura is a little weird. I have tried to map the shifting story of this book's contents and title in my recent work on Sebastiano Serlio. Perhaps it is not yet sufficiently clear, but by my lights, if the Italian entry doesn't include this information, so much worse for the Italians. Phil wink (talk) 14:45, 7 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure these edits are a net improvement so far. Why only dated works in the list? You've removed the dated Vision of St Jerome (see lead), one of his most important works. The article now needs more images, but I hope you will be doing that. Johnbod (talk) 17:01, 7 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Venetian Ionian Islands

[edit]

Hello. I am addressing to you about this article. You are an administrator, right? Somebody changed the title of the article to Ionian Islands under Venetian Rule stating that it is more correct. I am new here but as I was going through some Wikipedia rules I found out that nobody can change the title of any article whithout proposing it in the talk page first, is that right? He didn't do it. So I am asking if you can do something like change the title back to Venetian Ionian Islands. I don't think it's wrong; I read this before choosing it as a title for the article. Furthermore there are many other article following this style eg. Roman Britain, Ottoman Greece etc. Αmicably --Marcofran (talk) 10:11, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Grazie mille!! I see.. it's ok.. :D For the name I will address to somebody else! I had thought about contributing to this article, yes. I will start as soon as I finish with the first one. Thank you again! :)) --Marcofran (talk) 14:19, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Also the article mentions a brussels crucifixion, I have repros in books but cant find it (free) online. Again, and ideas? Ciao dude. Ceoil (talk) 08:23, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Attilios. I have nominated this article, yet another nice piece of work by you, for DYK. The nomination can be found here. Could you put in some inline citations, please? --PFHLai (talk)

You're welcome, Attilios. Yes, Parmigianino's paintings were astounding. Your wikiarticles can help promote him. :-)
Please be reminded to put in some footnotes. They are required for DYK. I tried to put in some in Gian Galeazzo Sanvitale, but I don't know Italian, so I couldn't do much. Thanks. --PFHLai (talk) 14:52, 17 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

re: Turkish Slave

[edit]

Another nice painting, eh? Great. Thank you. The DYK nom is here. It's interesting that the "turban" is so prominantly featured in the header on every webpage at Parma's official tourist information portal.
The portrait of Galeazzo Sanvitale has yet to get on MainPage. It's a double-hook, and the lack of footnotes in the subject's wikibio is holding things up here. If you can, please help put in some footnotes as required per DYK rules. Thank you. --PFHLai (talk) 16:04, 18 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you have some good refs about this feature from the Parmigianino painting becoming Parma's city symbol, please mention this point in the painting's wikiarticle. Seems to be great DYK hook material. :-) Cheers! --PFHLai (talk) 19:41, 18 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulation! Your English is very much better than my Italian! I can order a cup of coffee and a pizza. Amandajm (talk) 07:30, 24 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I know about the closing times. I have a dear friend who is from Calabria. But she is a hopeless teacher. She cannot ever tell me what a word means. Whatismore, almost everything she reads is either about movie stars or Padre Pio! When we moved to our current location, we found again we were in Little Calabria. My son learned a small amount of Italian while he was in primary school, and like me, he can order a pizza and a drink! However, when I have been in Italy for a few days, my understanding becomes much better than my spoken Italian. We were in a restaurant in Florence and after the child (who was 9) had ordered, the snooty waiter said to another waiter "My God, the horrible Australian brat has a Calabrian accent!" Lombardy confusion etc.

[edit]

Hi Attilios,

Regarding polychromed, that's very simple: "polychrome" is a transitive verb, as attested by Websters, Collins and the Oxford New American Dictionary, which I quote:

polychrome |ˌpɒlɪkrəʊm|

adjective

painted, printed, or decorated in several colors.

noun

varied coloring.

• a work of art in several colors, esp. a statue.

verb [ trans. ] [usu. as adj. ] ( polychromed)

execute or decorate (a work of art) in several colors.

As for Lombardy/Lombard architecture, that's more complicated and I'll get back to you on that when I have more time.

Now, as for Lombard etc.

[edit]

Curiously, you recommend me to check out Lombard architecture. This makes me think you haven't read either my edit summary or my edit very carefully. What the article previously said was "Nave from the 11th century with exterior lombardic decorations", with a link to Lombards. OK,this is not precisely correct, but what you changed it to was "Lombardy-style decorations" with a link to Lombardy. This is quite incorrect, because there is (now) no such thing as a "Lombardy style". What is intended is precisely "in the style of Lombard architecture", as I think I made clear in my edit: "Lombardic-style decorations" with a link to Lombard architecture. As for the adjective Lombardic, OK, perhaps it's not quite correctly used here, as it means "of or relating to Lombardy, or to the Lombards or their language". But the issue is not so much whether one writes Lombard or Lombardic as which article the wikilink points to. I pointed it Lombardic architecture, which is the article you then recommended me to read! And yet in my edit summary I wrote "We're referring here to early mediaeval Lombard architecture, not modern Lombardy."

Incidentally, what is meant by here Lombard-style decoration, or whatever we decide to call it, is probably the use of blind arcades and pilasters, similar to the ones in this photograph of Sant Vicenç de Cardona, for example. AdeMiami (talk) 07:12, 26 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Romanico lombardo

[edit]

Yes, you're exactly right! How closely the picture of the Rotonda di San Tomè resembles the east end of the church at Cardona! This clarifies something that had puzzled me for years: why do Spanish art historians use the term lombardo for that sort of wall decoration (actually not purely decorative), which is so common on early Romanesque buildings in Catalonia. I wasn't able to see much resemblance between it and the early Lombard buildings.

As for plugging the gap, the article on Romanesque architecture doesn't say much about regional varieties, so there's nowhere for the piped link to go without creating a new article. Perhaps the solution is to translate the Italian article into English, at least partially. I wouldn't be able to start on that for a couple of weeks, because I'm very busy in Real Life. But I think there's great rush. AdeMiami (talk) 09:13, 26 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Guillaume Bottazzi article

[edit]

Dear Attilios,

I know you are a great Wikipedia contributor. I saw that you deleted all references on the article "Guillaume Bottazzi". It is written 'references - no more refs to be included now'. Is that mean I do have to find other references? And may be not in French but in English? Please help me to understand what to do, because I think that references for this artist are important: it explain his art works on specific sites, which are the main part of his activity.

My best regards,

File permission problem with File:Adrara_San_Martino-Stemma.png

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Adrara_San_Martino-Stemma.png. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sreejith K (talk) 08:23, 29 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

File:MB-326K Ghana.jpg needs authorship information

[edit]
Dear uploader:

The media file you uploaded as File:MB-326K Ghana.jpg appears to be missing information as to its authorship (and or source), or if you did provide such information, it is confusing for others trying to make use of the image.

It would be appreciated if you would consider updating the file description page, to make the authorship of the media clearer.

Although some images may not need author information in obvious cases, (such where an applicable source is provided), authorship information aids users of the image, and helps ensure that appropriate credit is given (a requirement of some licenses).

  • If you created this media yourself, please consider explicitly including your user name, for which: {{subst:usernameexpand|Attilios/Archives6}} will produce an appropriate expansion,
    or use the {{own}} template.
  • If this is an old image, for which the authorship is unknown or impossible to determine, please indicate this on the file description page.
If you have any questions please see Help:File page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 19:51, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Grazie mille e cordiali saluti --Simon84b (talk) 22:06, 16 February 2012 (CET)

The article La Locanda delle Fate has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

no assertion of notability. The article itself says they "encountered little success"

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Sammarinese referendums

Hello Attilios. I have recently created articles for most of the elections and referendums on {{Sammarinese elections}}, but my source did not cover the referendums in 2003, 2008 and 2011. could you please comment at Template_talk:Infobox_Town_AT#Automatic_Wikilinking_of_mayors? Please see the discussion to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. A tag has been placed on File:Norcia-Stemma.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image licensed as "for non-commercial use only," "non-derivative use" or "used with permission," it has not been shown to comply with the limited standards for the use of non-free content. [2], and it was either uploaded on or after 2005-05-19, or is not used in any articles. If you agree with the deletion, there is no need to do anything. If, however, you believe that this image may be retained on Wikipedia under one of the permitted conditions then:

  • state clearly the source of the image. If it has been copied from elsewhere on the web you should provide links to: the image itself, the page which uses it and the page which contains the license conditions.
  • add the relevant copyright tag.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Stefan2 (talk) 21:07, 31 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free rationale for File:Stemma di Larino.png

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Stemma di Larino.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 21:11, 31 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:Favignana-Stemma.gif

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Favignana-Stemma.gif, which you've sourced to CC-BY-NC-ND, see [3]..

Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 21:21, 31 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:CivitellainValdiChiana-Stemma.gif, which you've sourced to CC-BY-NC-ND, see [13]..

Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 21:25, 31 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File source problem with File:San Ciriaco di Ancona.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:San Ciriaco di Ancona.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. [edit]

The article Jean-Pierre Dionnet has been proposed for deletion because, under Wikipedia policy, all newly created biographies of living persons must have at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. joe deckertalk to me 02:51, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, It looks like you were one of the two main contributors to the John Bosco page, but you stopped a while ago. Anyway, FYI some of the unsourced items there are likely to be deleted soon, so I thought you should know, in case you want to touch them up with references. I do not really know enough about Bosco to jump into that page, so you may want to do that if you feel like it. Thanks. History2007 (talk) 15:10, 16 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I Giganti

[edit]

Saluti --Shardan (talk) 16:50, 18 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Via D'Amelio massacre

[edit]

I admire your courage to take this on. It is a complicated issue and that has kept me from even thinking to begin with it. If I may suggest some changes: I think it would be better to include the agenda issue in the article on Paolo Borsellino - which needs expanding anyway - and only mention it briefly here. The 'Investigations and sentences' section probably also needs to be moved to the article on Borsellino and should be chronological, to make it less confusing. It is better to stick to the actual massacre in this article, imho. You could also consider to use the Infobox civilian attack, as is done in the article about the Ciaculli massacre. I also would change the title into Via D'Amelio massacre. But other than that: good work and complimenti. - DonCalo (talk) 16:00, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

G'day!

[edit]

Hello, Attilios! How is life? I notice you are pushing poor old Ghirlandaio around! Try moving the big horizontal pic to the bottom, where it can breathe, and put the girl so she looks in, not out.

It is getting on for winter and I'm freezing. I've been out doing some sculpture this evening, just modelling in clay, which I love better than anything. I made a cherub. How is your family developing? Amandajm (talk) 15:48, 31 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Attilios! Check out what I did with Domenico Ghirlandaio and tell me if you think it is an improvement. Amandajm (talk) 07:53, 1 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The Ghirla thing is fine! It doesn't have to be my way. It's quite tidy.
I will check out your Santa Fina article...... here is a link to mine: Santa Fina and the Violets
and the other blog that relates to this has all my Italian poems including the Santa Fina poem at Santa Fina
What a coincidence! I read the Santa Fina poem yesterday.
Enjoy!

Non-free rationale for File:Sergio Toppi panel.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Sergio Toppi panel.jpg.

Hi Attilios. Regarding the question you asked in this edit summary, I think those are quotes from the race report in Road & Track magazine, which is listed as a reference. File:Sraffa.jpg needs authorship information

[edit]
Dear uploader:

The media file you uploaded as File:Sraffa.jpg appears to be missing information as to its authorship (and or source), or if you did provide such information, it is confusing for others trying to make use of the image.

Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 12:59, 1 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File:Nepasa necropolis.jpg needs authorship information

[edit]
Dear uploader:

The media file you uploaded as File:Nepasa necropolis.jpg appears to be missing information as to its authorship (and or source), or if you did provide such information, it is confusing for others trying to make use of the image.

Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 09:17, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Regional detail in sister cities

Unless dealing with smaller countries, regional detail is necessary in many cases to prevent confusion and possible ambiguity. For example, I saw Taizhou, Zhejiang being piped to "Taizhou", which isn't helpful at all. GotR Talk 13:56, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (File:Občina Ribnica grb.gif)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Občina Ribnica grb.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:06, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to workshops on editing Wikipedia

[edit]

Dear Attilios,

We are a team of researchers at the University of Oxford and AU Sharjah, researching the experiences of editors of content about the Arab world on Wikipedia. We are interested in your experiences of editing Wikipedia and are organising two events that we think you would be an excellent contributor to.

First, we are hosting an online wiki focus group about contributing to Wikipedia in Arabic and to articles about the Middle East and North Africa. We are interested in what barriers you perceive to exist in Wikipedia, how articles can be made better and generally what can be done to expand and improve Arabic Wikipedia and Wikipedia articles about the Arab world. This discussion will take place on a MediaWiki hosted at our institution and be available in English and Arabic. We will allow users to create their own discussion pages in addition to our discussions.

Second, we are hosting face-to-face workshops in Cairo from 21st-22nd October 2012. If you are interested in this we should be able to pay travel and accommodation costs for up to twenty participants. This workshop will cover similar themes to the online discussion but will allow participants to meet one another and benefit from being together.

We will take care of the organization and planning and all you have to do is show up and be ready to discuss. But if you would like to help shape some of the discussion themes in advance, please let us know. We have booked time in the workshops for Wikipedian-led discussions.

More details can be found by expanding our “Frequently Asked Questions” below.

We would be delighted to welcome you to either (or both) event. Please let us know (wikiproject@oii.ox.ac.uk) if you would like the opportunity to participate and we can send you more details.

Sincerely,

Mark, Bernie, Ilhem, Ali, Ahmed, and Heather

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:San Nicola dell'Alto-Stemma.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:05, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File source problem with File:Palazzo Farnese Piacenza progetto vignola facciata.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Palazzo Farnese Piacenza progetto vignola facciata.jpg.

Gozzi

[edit]

Hello, Attilios. Possibly this is not your thing, but you helped me before with some Italian-to-English on Sebastiano Serlio so... I've recently added a bunch of plays (the "Other plays") to Carlo Gozzi#Works, and provided Google-translated English versions of each title. I suspect it turned out fairly well, but there were a couple points (marked with "(?)" ) which I couldn't make out, and of course there may be howlers of which I'm blissfully unaware. I'd be much obliged if you'd give it a look. Thanks. Phil wink (talk) 04:40, 13 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:Cedegolo-Stemma.png

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Cedegolo-Stemma.png.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included.

Thank you. Kelly hi! 04:21, 5 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
