Hey :-)

Hey you! Someone linked me to a thread you were in, and I thought I'd pop by and say hey. Hope you're doing well! - TNT 😺 00:48, 23 June 2021 (UTC)

Thought I'd also pop by and say a quick hello - long time no talk! I remember you being of great help in my earlier days of editing - it's great to see that you're still around! Best, Patient Zerotalk 22:35, 29 June 2021 (UTC)
Just joining Sam in saying despite both your and my relative inactivity these days, I do miss you. Easily one of the best people I've met on this website. TonyBallioni (talk) 02:31, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
Aw, you guys. Thanks. Not gonna cry 'cause I've cried too much already. :-)
As I've told several folks, I lost both my parents and my mother's last living sister, who had no direct heirs and no will (and a house full of empty Coke cans and junk and cat shit), in March and early April – my parents died nine days apart and my aunt passed away two weeks after my mom. (If you need assistance navigating the American funeral system, I'm your gal.) My dad had been ill since January but my mom simply decided she didn't want to live without him, and the speed of her decline was unexpected. I do not want to relive March and April in any form, in any life, under any circumstance, ever again, because it was awful. Fortunately, if there is a bright side, my parents had planned ahead with a living trust, and that made it so much easier. I can't imagine having to deal with these three estates without it. There are a few problems, which is to be expected, and we're getting those lined out slowly but surely. (My aunt's house, though... I have no words. Three tons of junk hauled away.) I went on vacation a couple of weeks ago, finally, and after one more family obligation next week I should be able to find at least some time for things I (used to) like to do. Thanks again for the good wishes, and I'll see you all soon. :-) Katietalk 13:24, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
I know at least a portion of your pain as I lost my mother in February to dementia. Fortunately she had created a living trust as well and that made things so much easier for my sister and I. My deepest sympathies and maybe one of these days we can work together on the USS Oklahoma article!--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 14:34, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
I'm incredibly sorry to hear, Katie - sounds like things have been really stressful over the past few months. I lost a relative last August and, due to COVID-related restrictions around the number of people that could attend funerals in England, I wasn't able to say goodbye. Grief's a difficult feeling, and coupled with all of the other things you had to deal with... I mean, for starters, I can confirm from experience that cat shit has a pungent smell. I'm glad you were able to take some well-deserved time off with your holiday - looking forward to seeing you back here again, but be sure to take all the time you need. All the very best, Patient Zerotalk 23:11, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
  • Glad your back. you already know I also lost someone, and my aunt also died earlier this year, leaving my sister with a similar but less disgusting hoarding issue. She was a bit of a hoarder of clothes and for some reason medical equipment, but not garbage or cat poop. Here's a fun one though, regarding estate planning: my uncle Eddie died a few years back. Turns out we were not blood relatives at all. My great-grandparents took him in because his family had more kids than they could support, but he was never legally adopted. He lived in my great grandmother's house the rest of his life. When he died, since he did not leave a will, his birth family, who none of us still living had ever even met and who Eddie never talked about, inherited the house and everything in it. (well, a few items may have escaped while the legalities were being finalized....) Leave a will people, and a living will. And clean the litter box. Beeblebrox (talk) 21:03, 1 July 2021 (UTC)
My deepest sympathies for your losses Katie. I too lost my mother in 2019 and miss her every day. Please take care of yourself. MarnetteD|Talk 21:14, 1 July 2021 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – July 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC is open to add a delay of one week from nomination to deletion for G13 speedy deletions.

Technical news

  • Last week all wikis were very slow or not accessible for 30 minutes. This was due to server lag caused by regenerating dynamic lists on the Russian Wikinews after a large bulk import. (T287380)

Help restoring page deleted by a now-blocked user

Hi,

Hope you're well.

I had previously created a page titled "Grepsr" which was moved to Drafts and later deleted by the user 'Frayae'. I was wondering if you would be able to restore the page back to Drafts so that I could edit and add new information to it.

Any suggestions on how I could proceed would also be highly appreciated.

Look forward to your response. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bcf.arj (talkcontribs)

@Bcf.arj: Since you're working for pay and this was the third time it was deleted for lack of activity, and the third time you've asked for it to be restored, I'd prefer you follow the process at WP:REFUND. I'm not here for the convenience of paid editors who let their drafts sit indefinitely and then want us to undelete them whenever they deign to bless us with their presence to work on them. CU / OS Appointment Announcement

Hi Katie, I believe there might be a typo in the CU / OS appointment announcement, as the title refers to it being the “2020 CheckUser and Oversight appointments”? I saw this initially on Wikipedia talk:OS and boldly fixed it, but given it’s on more pages thought it best to let you know instead, just in case I’m missing something. Thanks, --Jack Frost (talk) 12:02, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

@Jack Frost: Yep, I'm a doofus and copied the wrong heading line. The amount of copy/pasting and boilerplate associated with this gig will make your eyes cross. They've all been fixed now by others, so thanks to you and them for cleaning up my little puddles. :-) Katietalk 14:11, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

Arbitration

  • A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
  • Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
  • The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.

Miscellaneous

  • Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.
  • The community consultation phase of the 2021 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process is open for editors to provide comments and ask questions to candidates.

ArbCom 2021 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2021 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:15, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

Spasmsmash unblock

Spasmsmash, whom you blocked as part of an SPI, is requesting unblock; says s/he's probably working in the same building as the rest of of the blocked accounts. Their editing history doesn't seem to be like the two accounts originally reported. Is there something not visible in the SPI. Daniel Case (talk) 20:47, 27 November 2021 (UTC)

  • @Daniel Case: Nice to see you! I can't say more publicly than I already have, but yes. Plus it's a CU block, and Arbcom, as you know, is thataway. (I'll be recused or enjoying an adult beverage on the Arbcom retirement beach during any appeal they make.) Thanks for the question. :-) Katietalk 21:55, 27 November 2021 (UTC)

Lincoln Riley Article

You should not be an admin, the way you completely overreacted on the Lincoln Riley article. Changes have been made once again, schools have officially announced - less than 1 hour after your outburst in the edits. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jakobees (talkcontribs) 01:46, 29 November 2021 (UTC)

  • Yes, schools have now announced, which is I reduced the protection back to the status quo. That had not yet happened when you decided to edit war over it. We have handled unannounced rumors about signings and coaching changes in this manner for many, many years. If you don't think I should be an admin, you should see WP:ADMINABUSE. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
