TrangaBellam, "redirect" on its own is not a clear !vote. You need to specify the desired target, or else to keep the status quo. signed, Rosguill talk 20:52, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
I meant to preserve the redirect, as it is. That is, to Soomra dynasty. It was I who implemented the redirect; so, thought that the target was not worth mentioning. TrangaBellam (talk) 20:56, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
TrangaBellam, noted. For future reference, that is better expressed by the !vote keep. signed, Rosguill talk 20:58, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
Thanks. I am new to RfD and got confused with AfD !voting legends. Thought that a keep-vote will mean restoring the article back. TrangaBellam (talk) 21:00, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

Adoption?

I am a new-ish user who in the past used alt accounts to vandalise. (Just making that clear) I want to start making articles, and editing articles. If you could adopt me that would be very helpful, because now, I’m stumbling around random articles and doing nothing. Sorry to bother you, please reply soon. Hi Rosguill, hope you're doing well. A person is continuously removing or changing and what ever he want. He is not even ready to discuss about anything. I have issued many warnings but he is doing the same thing. Can you please go through [his contributions and do something. The user is Sushameendra Simha.Vaddigiri. Mammals of South Ossetia

Wikipedia has told me you flagged "List of mammals of South Ossetia" as reviewed. Does this mean you've shut down the discussion regarding it? And have you reached a consensus? J0ngM0ng (talk) 15:00, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

J0ngM0ng, no, articles nominated for AfD are supposed to be marked reviewed so that they are removed from the new pages queue. This has no bearing on the ongoing deletion discussion itself. signed, Rosguill talk 16:21, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

As you are autoconfirmed, you are also able to have a go at recreating an article yourself, however, similar to my opposition, someone might see it as non-notable and take it to Articles for deletion, so please also consider looking into WP:GNG and WP:REFB. New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021

New Page Review queue September 2021

Hello Rosguill,

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here. Sent to 827 users. 04:32, 16 September 2021 (UTC)

Hi! I did not take any data or text from https://www.chronicleindia.in/hindi/current-affairs/59-financial-intelligence-unit-ndash-india-fiu-ind. That site does not have original content and took their content from the official site of FIU-IND (check at the bottom for source). Please check the official site https://fiuindia.gov.in/files/About_FIU-IND/About_FIUIND.html and the four sections given on the left. Moreover, I had also mentioned the source. Moreover, the Header section and the Organisation section were my own language. Only the Functions section had text from the original official website. The official website describe the functions using various concise and technical terms; changing the language there is difficult, without changing the meaning of the functions. If required, I can attempt changing the language; you could have just asked me to do so without removing the article. Sincerely, Hrishikes (talk) 05:49, 21 September 2021 (UTC)

Hrishikes, I suspected something along these lines, as I noted at your talk page, but I am unable to access the FIU-IND site myself (tried multiple times in different browsers, kept getting errors). At any rate, I can restore the content, but in the future see WP:FREECOPYING for the proper instructions for how to copy from the FIU-IND or other public domain sources, as we still need to give proper attribution even if it's public domain. signed, Rosguill talk 17:19, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
Thanks. Please see the archived copy of "FIU-IND/about" here: https://web.archive.org/web/20200325183509/https://fiuindia.gov.in/files/About_FIU-IND/About_FIUIND.html. I did give attribution, see serial 2 of the References. Sincerely, Hrishikes (talk) 01:15, 22 September 2021 (UTC)

I declined CU based on how long it's been since PR's last edit—I can elaborate, but WP:BEANS and all that—but found some pretty damning behavioral evidence, even beyond what Liz said. 'PageTriage' and redirects

Hello Rosguill!

This is something I suspect I should know about... but don't. Please forgive my ignorance – I've only been here for... er... 9 years, so my staggering about not knowing what I'm doing would appear to be resolutely permanent.

This appeared on my Watchlist:

19 September 2021
(Page curation log) 17:32 Rosguill (talk|contribs) marked Head of the army as reviewed. ‎[Tag: PageTriage]

I want to assume that this is internal wikistuff that just happens and is normal and things, but I suspect it means I did something wrong or stupid when I created that redirect, or I just made work for someone else, which is almost as bad! If either of those, can you or one of your talk page stalkers let me know how to do it right/not make work for people in future?

Although, by posting here, I am, of course, making even more work for you. Yay me. ◦ Trey Maturin 16:28, 24 September 2021 (UTC)

Trey Maturin, you're good, the notification you're seeing is just to note that I checked off the rerdirect as part of new page patrol, so it actually means you did everything correctly. Arbitration

  • A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
  • Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
  • The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.

Miscellaneous

  • Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.
  • The community consultation phase of the 2021 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process is open for editors to provide comments and ask questions to candidates.

Hounding concerns

Hi Rosguill. I'm concerned with two editors in particular who are targeting me which may be contrary to our policies. There is one editor who didn't like an edit I made on an article they've edited, and they are now going to other articles I've edited to reverse longstanding edits I've made, and post on other talk pages criticism of me. They're also requesting other editors who I've had content disagreements with to join them in discussions. Another editor whose only interactions with me have been negative has joined a discussion that they otherwise wouldn't have been involved in, to level criticism at me. These things feel like they shouldn't be allowed, can you offer any advice? I'm very willing to have constructive discussions about article splitting and edits I've made, but this is feeling very personal and intimidating. Thanks. Onetwothreeip (talk) 21:35, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

Onetwothreeip, unfortunately the only real course of action beyond asking them to stop is to take it up at ANI. In principle I could try to investigate and intervene prior to that, but I really don't have the bandwidth to take that on in any timeframe that would be helpful. signed, Rosguill talk 21:41, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

I had written an article on Wikipedia and the newly blocked user GermanKity; who you've indefinitely blocked, moved my article to a draft page and asked for improvements. I have made significant improvements on the page and wanted to contact GermanKity so I could get further help on making the article move closer to the main space. But since they don't exist, can you help me with the matter? or can you suggest other help I could be getting? Thanks a million. Rooz1370 — Preceding undated comment added 08:23, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

Rooz1370, are you talking about Draft:Nima Bank? Looking at its history, while it was originally moved to draft by GermanKitty, it has since then been reviewed by two separate AfC reviewers who saw fit to first decline and then reject the submission, so GermanKitty being blocked is irrelevant at this point. I would reach out to the AfC reviewers that reviewed the page since then. signed, Rosguill talk 14:52, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

Help

Hi. You declined my request. Where is the problem? And When I should make another request? I want to be a new page reviewer. I've changed my username. You can see that I've nominated AfD and CSD some pages. I was blocked. Is this the problem? How many days after I should make another request? Isn't my account 90 days old or I haven't made 500 undeleted edits to articles or any other thing. Hope you reply. Thanks.  ||  Orbit Wharf  💬 06:15, 14 October 2021 (UTC)

Orbit Wharf New page patrol and AfC are not permissions that we hand out to every editor meeting the minimum requirements; those requirements are the minimum necessary for consideration for the permission. As you have recently been blocked due to problems with your editing, you are going to need to spend a significant amount of time demonstrating that you have learned from your past mistakes, months if not years of work. You need to understand that many of Wikipedia's decision-making processes work slowly; it is simply not possible to acquire the relevant skills in a few days or weeks, even if you make lots of edits, because the processes themselves often take longer than this. Quite frankly, your decision to change your user name suggests to me that you're trying to evade scrutiny of your past edits, which makes me further disinclined to confer advanced permissions to you. I also have some concerns about your English reading comprehension and writing skills, which need to be near-flawless for new page curation related permissions. There is no shortage of work that you can do on Wikipedia without advanced permissions, go focus on that. signed, Rosguill talk 19:01, 14 October 2021 (UTC)
Please believe me! I didn't changed my username for trying to evade scrutiny of my past edits! Yeah. I was blocked for copyrighting. But 1 or 2 weeks I was unblocked because I didn't do any copyright violation in the time. The block would expire on 22 March 2022. I'm Bangladeshi. I'm not very expert at English. But I'm trying to be expert at English.  ||  Orbit Wharf  💬 06:14, 15 October 2021 (UTC)

Orbit Wharf, please stop requesting advanced permissions. You are a beginner editor and need to learn how to edit and communicate better before you have any business requesting permissions. At this point, your repeated eagerness to request permissions has become a drain on other editors' time, and evidence in itself that you don't fully understand what you're doing. This is my last time telling you nicely. signed, Rosguill talk 05:04, 24 October 2021 (UTC)

Orbit Wharf, my honest suggestion is to take a break and go do something you enjoy that isn't Wikipedia. In the future when you come back, go slow: focus on simple tasks that don't use automated tools. The best cure for wikistress is time away from Wikipedia. I know you want to help, but right now your attempts to help are just creating more work for other editors, which is worse than not helping at all. signed, Rosguill talk 17:52, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
@Rosguill, but I can't live without Wikipedia. Even I'm now crying. I don't want to insult someone or disturb other editors.  regards, Orbit Wharf  💬  |  📝 18:06, 26 October 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for providing me temporary reviewing rights, last month. This month, I am a bit occupied so can't review new pages, hence not requesting for the rights. I will reach out to you later. Hope this is fine.

The Barnstar of Good Humor
Wikipedia:How to get away with UPE made me chuckle. Thanks for that, and for all the other work you do around here. --Blablubbs (talk) 10:41, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
Blablubbs, thanks for the compliments and for expanding the essay. I'm going to let it marinate for a bit and then probably submit it to the Signpost. signed, Rosguill talk 15:54, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
@Blablubbs, sure made me laugh as well, especially the part where Rosguill implies having an account with Administrator privileges is a good idea, a beautiful humorous essay that is. On a serious note, of recent, cheats are no longer working anymore for editors engaging in less than ethical practices, thanks to individuals like yourself, Rosguill, DGG, MER-C, and so many other anti spam editors. My favorite quote, which i coined is ”The beauty of UPE is that UPE never fails to be UPE” that is; no matter how cleverly written or how well worded, neutral & WP:Balalanced the perpetrator feels the UPE article is, the ADMASQ always pops up. Hello, Rosguill. Please check your email; you've got mail!
It may take a few minutes from the time the email is sent for it to show up in your inbox. You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{You've got mail}} or {{ygm}} template.

A. Rosenberg (talk) 16:43, 10 November 2021 (UTC)

Asher Rosenberg, I see the email, but the sources you've provided appear to be screenshots of posts on a social media site, which are not considered a reliable source on Wikipedia. Please review our reliable sourcing guidelines, particularly the section on user-generated content and our guideline on due weight within articles. The TL;DR is that we need professional publications with reputations for reliability to report on this before we can include it in the article. For a Modern Orthodox high school, if such coverage exists it would probably look like articles in JTA or The Forward, or local news media. It is not enough to establish that something happened (and a social media doesn't even really do that), we need to establish that this incident is considered important by reliable sources and thus worthy of inclusion. signed, Rosguill talk 16:49, 10 November 2021 (UTC)

They are screenshots of the emails mentioned. A. Rosenberg (talk) 16:52, 10 November 2021 (UTC)

Asher Rosenberg, ok, that's even less usable. Like I said, we need verifiable coverage by established reliable sources, not some screenshots. signed, Rosguill talk 17:15, 10 November 2021 (UTC)

Fre/Eng Article Translation

Hi! I'm translating an article from French to English and was wondering if you could maybe provide a bit of advice? The draft is on Axel Auriant (French Actor). How close is this article, in your view, to being ready for review? It needs a few more citations, and I was thinking would it be appropriate enough to check the sources on the French original article, and if they suit, just paste them into the draft? If there is anything obvious that should be changed before it would reasonably be published, please do say. Sorry if this is the wrong platform to ask - I saw you are a French speaker, and involved in the review process, so thought you might be quite well equipped so speak on this issue. Many thanks and sorry for the bother, --EcheveriaJ (talk) 22:22, 14 November 2021 (UTC)

EcheveriaJ At a glance, it looks like it meets WP:GNG and should be ready for mainspace (although I'm not familiar with some of the sources, so that's just a guess); you may want to find inline citations for the last few claims on the page before doing so though. signed, Rosguill talk 18:05, 15 November 2021 (UTC)

Hello
You tagged this article for neutrality a while ago, but didn’t say why. What was the issue? Moonraker12 (talk) 03:29, 17 November 2021 (UTC)

Moonraker12, I don't recall directly, but even glancing at it briefly now the text is still egregiously florid eg. The Kolkata Derby has been an eternal rivalry between the two oldest clubs in Indian football, The football-crazy Bengali was nowhere to be seen. This is not an appropriate tone for Wikipedia. signed, Rosguill talk 18:10, 17 November 2021 (UTC)

Possible Mentorship

Dear Rosguill, I was wondering if you would be willing to take me on as a mentee. I have been editing for a little while now, yet I have struggled to find a consistent space to work in (or really what I would consider solid editing). While I have helped out where I can, and I know that even the smallest contributions add up, I was wondering if could help you out (or with whatever is needed) and expand my skills as an editor along the way.

I will be honest, this does come while I am a little lost.

While I thought I was in line, an Admin reached out to me yesterday and informed me that I was not in line with some of my edits because of Redlink (reverted some of my edits). Being still relatively new, this of course stung - though luckily I reflected on their feedback rather than totally freaking out. In this cycle, I found myself reflecting on Wikipedia in general, and I started browsing through random forum/policy discussions. As you may have guessed, this became progressively more confusing and disillusioning as I went. So that is why I am here. I don't want to be disillusioned! I love the time I have spent so far at Wikipedia and I want to do more. So when I reflected on all this, I wanted to find somebody who could not only serve as a guide through the chaos but also serve as a check so that I don’t mess something up again. Thank you for your consideration, and I appreciate your time.

Sincerely, Willthehelpfuleditor (talk 02:17, 17 November 2021 (UTC)

Willthehelpfuleditor, unfortunately I'm rather swamped outside Wikipedia right now and can't commit to mentoring you. If you haven't come by it yet, you can find other potential mentors at Wikipedia:Adopt-a-user. signed, Rosguill talk 18:11, 17 November 2021 (UTC)

Discretionary sanctions topic area changes

In a process that began last year with WP:DS2021, the Arbitration Committee is evaluating Discretionary Sanctions (DS) in order to improve it. A larger package of reforms is slated for sometime this year. From the work done so far, it became clear a number of areas may no longer need DS or that some DS areas may be overly broad.

The topics proposed for revocation are:

  • Senkaku islands
  • Waldorf education
  • Ancient Egyptian race controversy
  • Scientology
  • Landmark worldwide

The topics proposed for a rewording of what is covered under DS are:

  • India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan
  • Armenia/Azerbaijan

Additionally any Article probation topics not already revoked are proposed for revocation.

Community feedback is invited and welcome at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Motions. --Barkeep49 (talk) 16:59, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
