Welcome

[edit]

Hello, Samara levine and welcome to Wikipedia! It appears you are participating in a class project. We encourage you to read our instructions for students. Your instructor or professor may wish to participate in either the School and University WikiProject or the Global Education Program. The Global Education Program is supported by the Wikimedia Foundation and offers official online and classroom support through the Ambassador Program.

Here are some other pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{Helpme}} before the question.

Before you create an article, make sure you understand what kind of articles are accepted here. Remember: Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and while many topics are encyclopedic, some things are not.

It is highly recommended that you place this text: {{Educational assignment}} on the talk page of any articles you are working on as part of your Wikipedia-related course assignment. This will let other editors know this article is a subject of an educational assignment and should be treated accordingly.

We hope you like it here and encourage you to stay even after your assignment is finished! Pharaoh of the Wizards (talk) 20:24, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome!

Hi, thanks for your edits to this article. Unfortunately there are a few problems

You have a list of references, but because you have not used in line references, it is impossible to attribute each part of the text to a specific reference
You have not wikilinked to other articles, or followed the bird project conventions and MoS for section headings and their capitalisation
The text appeared almost in one edit, which makes me wonder where it comes from
There is a large unattributed quote under references, needs a reference and should be a note, not loose text or a reference

I'm minded to revert the article to its previous version, but I'm aware you are a student, so I'll give you a bit of time. Please look at an article like Corn Crake to see how an article should be laid out and referenced. Let me know if you need help, or post on the project talk page Jimfbleak - talk to me? 12:41, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reply. You may find the WikiEd add-on (My Preferences - Gadgets) useful if you are not already using it. Wikipedia:INCITE#Inline_citations and Wikipedia:Citation_templates are your complete guide to referencing, let me know if you get stuck Jimfbleak - talk to me? 16:02, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jim, I really appreciate your patience. I think I have corrected the citations and they are now in the correct format, I am, however, still having trouble referencing my citations within the piece. Since a reflist has already been made by the original editor, I'm not sure how to add my references to that list in order to properly use them for in text citations. I appreciate the referral to those two sites; I think they will be very helpful once I get my foot in the door a bit more. Samara levine (talk) 02:00, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

For the in test citing, write <ref> ___the source____ </ref> and if will add the citation to the references and the appropriate number to the statement being referenced.

Much better. I made these changes, and removed the tag. Could probably do with a few more wikilinks, and the first para of your section appears to be unrefeerenced. I'm away for a couple of days, I'll have another look when I return. Jimfbleak - talk to me? 05:28, 3 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The previous reviewer did not havethe experience to apply WP:PROF correctly. I work very frequently with articles like this, and I am confident in telling you that the purpose of WP:PROF is to be an alternative to the GNG, not an additional requirement, and this has been accepted at essentially all AfDs. A person with a named professorship at a major university fully meets the requirements of WP:PROF, and so do people with distinctions like Fellowship of the AAAS, which is much more than mere membership. Either of these are always been considered sufficient distinction for Wikipedia .

It is however be good to add a list of the most cited published papers with their citation figures--its appropriate content.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

GA nomination

[edit]

Hi Samara: I've started a review of your Red-collared Widowbird article, and have been stymied by this edit. In the future, please don't change the status of a GA review on the article's talk page. There is a bot that does this, based on certain things happening at the GAN page. These are now out of synch, and will have to be fixed by an administrator! :P By the way, it's also good form to fix the things mentioned in the first review before submitting it again; those "citation needed" tags are still there! MeegsC (talk) 15:06, 18 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

My apologies! I'm new to the nominations; I appreciate the help! I didn't realize there were still "citation needed" tags. I addressed these now and I believe addressed the other concerns of the first review. If not, I appreciate all the constructive criticism! Thanks again! Samara levine (talk) 15:16, 18 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No worries! I've left a note at the GAN page, asking for help. By the way, you might consider asking for a peer review at WP:BIRD before submitting your article—at least until you get the hang of what's needed. This article is quite a ways from GA status, but I'm certainly willing to work with you to get it there. If you want see examples of bird articles currently at GA status (to see what sort of standard they're held to), see the listing on the WP:BIRD page. And don't forget that there are lots of us at the project ready and willing to help you out; just ask!  :) MeegsC (talk) 15:20, 18 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have a tip. I see your name is not "clickable" with your comment there, so I think you might have signed it not in the way that is described at H:Cheatsheet. That way should make things easier. Best. Biosthmors (talk) 22:40, 30 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I'm not sure what the problem is because I added the signature as I always do? Let me know!SGL333 02:15, 31 March 2013 (UTC)
Additionally, can I assume that people will have seen my comment or should I contact them directly? SGL333 22:12, 31 March 2013 (UTC)
I emailed you an option. Also, you could ask User:Sage Ross (WMF), though I do doubt it will work (for you to get the instructor right). Sorry I might have given you an untenable suggestion! Best. Biosthmors (talk) 03:05, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
