Prizes will be handed out in the coming weeks. Please be patient!
Congratulations to everyone who has been successful in this year's WikiCup, whether you made it to the final rounds or not, and a particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup who have achieved this year. Thanks to all who have taken part and helped out with the competition. While it has been an excellent year, errors have opened up the judges' eyes to the need for a third judge, and it is with pleasure that we announce that experienced WikiCup participant Miyagawa will be acting as a judge from now on. We hope you will all join us in welcoming him to the team.
Next year's competition begins on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; it is open to all Wikipedians, new and old. Brainstorming and discussion remains open for how next year's competition will work, and straw polls will be opened by the judges soon. Those interested in friendly competition may also like to keep an eye on the stub contest, being organised by Casliber. The WikiCup judges will be back in touch over the coming months, and we hope to see you all in the 2014 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Disambiguation link notification for November 3
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Orel Hershiser's scoreless inning streak, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Mike Marshall (baseball) (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Just wanted to thank you for the help. Been trying to find a way to improve this article for a while.
Articles you might like to edit, from SuggestBot
We are currently running a study on the effects of adding additional information to SuggestBot's suggestions. Participation in the study is voluntary. Should you wish to not participate in the study, or have questions or concerns, you can find contact information on the SuggestBot study page.
IMPORTANT CHANGES: We have modified the selection of articles SuggestBot suggests and altered the design to incorporate more information about the articles, as described in this explanation.
Note: All columns in this table are sortable, allowing you to rearrange the table so the articles most interesting to you are shown at the top. All images have mouse-over popups with more information.
Changes to SuggestBot's suggestions
We have changed the number of suggested articles and which categories they are selected from. The number of stubs has been greatly reduced, the number of articles needing sources doubled, and two new categories added (orphans and unencyclopaedic articles). We have also modified the layout of the suggestions and added sortable columns with various types of information about each article. The first two columns are:
- Views/Day
- Daily average number of views an article's had over the past 14 days.
- Quality
- Predicted article quality on a 1- to 3-star scale. Placing your cursor over the stars should give you a pop-up describing the article's quality (Low/Medium/High), current assessment class, and predicted assessment class.
The method we use to predict article quality also allows us to assess whether an article might need specific types of work in order to improve its quality. The work needed might not correspond to cleanup tags added to the article, since our method is not based on those. We have added five columns reflecting this work assessment, where a red X indicates improvement is needed. Placing your cursor over an X should give you a pop-up with a short description of the work needed. The five columns seek to answer the following five questions:
- Content
- Is more content needed?
- Headings
- Does this article have an appropriate section structure?
- Images
- Is the number of illustrative images about right?
- Links
- Does this article link to enough other Wikipedia articles?
- Sources
- For its length, is there an appropriate number of citations to sources in this article?
SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians. It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. We appreciate that you have signed up to receive suggestions regularly, your contributions make Wikipedia better — thanks for helping!
If you have feedback on how to make SuggestBot better, please let us know on SuggestBot's talk page. Regards from Nettrom (talk), SuggestBot's caretaker. -- SuggestBot (talk) 00:43, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

Do you do hook promotions?
Hi, I had a DYK approved a few days ago, but the hook has yet to be promoted (with other stuff promoted in the meantime, at T:TDYK, see Katherine Ritvo. Not sure who is promoting hooks these days, but looks like a labor shortage over at DYK generally, so I'm pinging a few people about this. Thanks! Your assistance requested at Portal:Chicago
Hello there. Espresso Addict and I are going through all of the currently featured portals and looking to see which ones meet the current standards, which ones need some improvement, and which ones need serious improvements or need to be delisted.
Portal:Chicago is still in decent shape, but there is one issue that I would like to address with it, which is the large variation in size between the entries in the selected article section. Most of the entries are between 4 and 6 lines on my screen (1600x900 resolution), however some are as short as two lines, while some are as long as a dozen lines. When some selected articles are four or six times as large as others, it creates a huge variance in how much space that section takes up on the portal itself.
Portal:Chicago is not in danger of being delisted (there are many more serious issues to worry about anyways), however I would like to get this issue resolved as part of my effort to clean up the featured portals overall.
Please let me know your thoughts, Sven Manguard Wha? 21:51, 11 November 2013 (UTC)
Kinky Boots (musical) going forward
Good work finding more information for the article. We are slowly but surely getting there. I have addressed more of the PR comments and marked those "done" or "fixed", but some of them are still left for you. Can you indicate on the PR page which ones you consider done, so that we can easily see which ones are still outstanding? Based on the PR comments, I did some more moving content around, and, by George, I think I've got it organized in a sensible order now. Plus, based on the rather extensive discussions about this point, I have created a separate article for Kinky Boots (Broadway cast album), moved the remaining cast album info to a lower section called "Recordings" and put a cross-reference there to the article for the album. Plus I've updated my own bulleted list of comments to show what I regard as still outstanding there. I should say that some of my comments are "aspirational", such as those about things like images and musical analysis, so I don't think that all of them would have to be fully addressed to get to GA. However, I do feel strongly that most of them should be fully addressed for GA, and we can continue to discuss any disagreements that you have with any of them at the article's talk page. -- Ssilvers (talk) 04:41, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

GAN December 2013 Backlog Drive
Hello! A GAN Backlog Drive will begin in less than 4 days! In past Backlog Drives, the goal was to reduce the backlog of Good article nominations. In the upcoming drive, another goal will be added - raising as much money as we can for the Wikimedia Foundation. How will this work? Well, its pretty simple. Any user interested in donating can submit a pledge at the Backlog Drive page (linked above). The pledge should mention the amount of money the user is willing to donate per review. For example, if a user pledges 5 cents per review and 100 nominations are reviewed, the total donation amount is $5.00. At the time this message was sent out, two users have submitted pledges for a total of 8 cents per review. All pledges, no matter how much money, are greatly appreciated. Also, in no way is this saying you must make a pledge. |
