Just wondering, is the above a real wikipedia project? or just a template? kawaputrahello! 21:34, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

Assessment ratings

I'm seeing a tendency for the articles in the Malaysia project to be rated with a higher importance than I believe they deserve. I recommend taking a look at how the articles in the Indonesia project were rated to see what I mean:

compared to:

In the Indonesia project we used an article importance hierarchy, with the very general articles being given high importance and the more specific sub-articles decreasing in importance. For example, relating to foods:

  • Top importance: Culture of Indonesia
  • High importance: Cuisine of Indonesia (a sub-article of Culture of Indonesia)
  • Mid/low importance: Rendang (a sub-article of Cuisine of Indonesia)

The same rules applied for history, politics, etc.

The only articles about people we rated with high importance were very well known individuals like presidents, whereas in the Malaysia project I'm seeing this rating being given to plenty of seemingly obscure people (even though they may be known within Malaysia) or very specific and obscure events, organizations, places, etc. Per the assessment project, importance is meant to be a rating of "the probability of the average reader of Wikipedia needing to look up the topic", rather than the average Malaysian reader.

Comments welcome... (Caniago 07:01, 11 August 2007 (UTC))

I generally rate people on the degree of importance or contributions they have made to Malaysia. eg: V. T. Sambanthan. I did refer to Category:High-importance Singapore articles. As for events or treaties i rate subjectively (ya, maybe this is wrong) but sometimes the importance of a particular event or people has been downplayed by the government and/or media. Like the 20-point agreement (Sabah) which is important in the formation of Malaysia in 1963. As for the others, i did also see Category:Top-importance Japan-related articles, where they rated sudoku and sushi as top importance. Hence i rate Nasi lemak as high. But I will duly note the Indonesian rating system and that "the probability of the average reader of Wikipedia needing to look up the topic". Will try improve. kawaputrahello! 07:44, 11 August 2007 (UTC)
And i think Mahathir should be rated Top (he's one of the very few Msians known worldwide), and Nicol David (No.1 squash player in the world) shd be rated high. Comments welcomed. kawaputrahello! 08:07, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

bin

I corrected 3 instances where the bin in various names was capitalised (Najib, Hishammuddin, Onn bin Jaafar). From what I can tell, this mostly originated when some anon changed the bin to Bean which was then changed to Bin. If anyone comes across any more instances remember to correct but bear in mind it appears to be standard practice to capitalise the Ibni in Mizan Zainal Abidin. Also there is still an unresolved naming issue at Talk:Hishammuddin Hussein. Nil Einne 14:04, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

No FA?

It looks like we've missed the boat on FAs for August 31st? No current FA that haven't been TFAs and don't see any mention of any article that's very near FA. On the off chance that anyone is working one one and thinks it's achievable, there is already a request for the 31st on Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests so I suggest you mention it there to make people aware Nil Einne 17:13, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

Actually just noticed durian is a FA but unfortunately it's a bit late now given it's only minor relevance. If we'd gotten in before York F.C. perhaps... :-P Nil Einne 14:10, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
Ironically York F.C. didn't even make it :-P Nil Einne 13:37, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

Indian Malaysian

Apa Kabar, Vanakkam, and Hi,

I have just joined your group. Also, would like to let you all know that there is an AfD going on in regards to an article called Dravidian civilizations which was started by a couple of trouble makers. Just to let you all know that I am not canvassing for people to vote on this page. However, there are several other users who are taking the liberty, just because they disagree with my articles and other people's articles, to go ahead and vandalize, remove items, change names of articles, and remove certain project banners from the page - specifically the WikiProject Dravidian civilizations. Users to watch out for are Bakasuprman, Sarvagnya, Gnanapiti, and KNM. These users are purposely doing these things because they are against me, not because they want to improve any articles. Anyways, I am glad to have joined this group Wiki Raja 06:11, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

Collaboration

Should we proceed with the collaboration for Malaysia. Its been awhile but not much action here. kawaputratorque 21:31, 14 September 2007 (UTC) Halooooo. kawaputratorque 07:43, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

A while? It's been two months. Just get started with the collab thing already so we can move on. I certainly wouldn't want this WikiProject to end up a failure like certain megaprojects in Malaysia. - Two hundred percent 08:27, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

In view of the minimal activity here and small number of participants, i decided to change the collaboration thingy from "Collaboration of the week" to "Collaboration of the month". Just say if u object. Thanks. kawaputratorque 18:27, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

AND, ive made Malaysia our FIRST collaboration of the month! :) kawaputratorque 18:44, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

Alaeddin Mosque, Jugra, Malaysia

I made a move request to change the title Alaeddin Mosque (Konya, Turkey) to Alaeddin Mosque, since, it seems to me, that of the several mosques named Alaeddin, the one in Konya is the most important in terms of architecture, history and general interest. I suggest transforming the current Alaeddin Mosque header I created into a disambiguation page for the others. Since there is an article on Alaeddin Mosque (Jugra, Malaysia), if anyone from Malaysia has an objection, he or she would be welcome to express it in Talk: Alaeddin Mosque (Konya, Turkey). Best regards. (There are two trolls infesting my edits, so don't be surprised by its length). Cretanforever 13:04, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

Book or journal reference for Penanggalan

Hi all, a few of us are working up vampire for a crack at FAC sometime soon. There is a mention of a Malaysian vampire-like creature called a Penanggalan. Was wondering whether anyone had a folklore book which could be cited as a reference with it in, which'd be good for both the vampire page and the Penanggalan page. cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 11:05, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Mack Zulkifli

Mack Zulkifli has been tagged for speedy deletion, but I think it needs a better discussion. I'm not sure how notable this is, but it's been around since 2006. Totnesmartin 12:12, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

Between Silat and Pencak Silat

One user insists to separate the two articles while others are trying to combine the two arguing both are actually the same thing. Your comments are needed here: Talk:Silat#Merge_between_Silat_and_Pencak_Silat to avoid any unilateral acts in the future whether to merge or to combine them. Thank you. — Indon (reply) — 08:11, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

Naming conventions

Do we need a naming conventions article for Malaysia? Some stuff is partially covered in existing articles e.g. Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Chinese) & [[Wikipedia:Manual of Style (Arabic)] but not that well. For example, there is obviously usually only one correct transliteration of a Chinese name for Malaysians and they nearly always use the style Lee Kuan Yew not Lee Kuan-yew or anything else. (Or Harry Lee Kuan Yew if the person has an English name). Similar for Malays their correct name is usually their Malay name even if it originates from Arabic so there are some important distinctions. Another issue is how we refer to people in articles. According the the MOS we should use the surname/family name but this obviously doesn't work for many Malaysians. While most articles use the correct style, e.g. Mathathir, Samy Vellu etc some can get confused e.g. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor (see my comment on the talk page there) and it would be helpful if we have a naming conventions article we can direct people to when there is confusion.Nil Einne 02:44, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

Ya, i think we need some sort of a naming convention. Also to deal with honorifics in Msian names. kawaputratorque 03:05, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
I'd be interested to see what you come up with. We have a similar situation with Icelandic people - most of us have patronymics and not family names. See Wikipedia:Manual of Style (Iceland-related articles). Also see Wikipedia:Manual of Style (Ethiopia-related articles) for more patronymics. Haukur 19:09, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
One question. Would you like to sort Malaysians by first name like on the Malay Wikipedia? We do that with Icelandic people, see Category:Icelandic people. Haukur 00:08, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
Sounds like a good idea, i think. FYI, Malaysians using patronymics are Malays, Indians, and some Dayaks in Sarawak. The rest actually have family names, so this might be a bit confusing. Sorting by first names might not work well with Chinese ppl. They have names like: Koh Tsu Koon. 'Koh' being the family name, and 'Tsu Koon' his first/given name. In M'sia we have gotten used to calling Chinese ppl in that order: 'Koh Tsu Koon'. Not 'Tsu Koon Koh'. But maybe we can only apply first name sorting to other Msian, but not the chinese, unless they have English names maybe. kawaputratorque 02:30, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
Okay, but even if we sort the Chinese by family name we are still sorting them by their first name, right? :) Haukur 16:31, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
Heh heh. Ya, thats right. (: kawaputratorque 06:02, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
So how do we sort biographical articles by their first name. Im guessing just do this: eg: Abdullah Badawi -> [[Category:Malaysian pimps|A ]] ? And, do we need some sort of permission to start/create the page: Wikipedia:Manual of Style (Malaysia-related articles) ? kawaputratorque 18:44, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
You need no-one's permission, just go right ahead. To change how someone is sorted you usually modify the DEFAULTSORT parameter, or add one if there is none. Here's an example: [1] Haukur 18:49, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
Ah cool. Thanks for the tips. If nobody's gonna start the page, i'll probably do it soon when i get all the stuff sorted. kawaputratorque 18:58, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
The page Wikipedia:Manual of Style (Malaysia-related articles) has been created. Please check for any errors or POV made. Thanks :) kawaputratorque 16:18, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Ticker Symbol Template for Bursa

I'm planning to create a template for placing ticker symbol of companies listed on Bursa Malaysia, at the same time grouping it into a category. An example would be Microsoft, which has two such templates in the beginning of the article.

So far I found two options for external linking. Example quote "1818" belongs to Bursa Malaysia Berhad.

  1. Via Yahoo Finance (SG). Example~ KLSE: 1818
  2. Via The Star Online: Business. Example~ KLSE: 1818

If we can't have one option, I can have both templates created, but I prefer an option. So I welcome suggestions on this. Hytar 20:01, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

Is "1818" a company? Are you talking about creating something which results in this: eg: Sime Darby (KLSE: SIME) ... ? I'd say go for it. I dont know which is better, but i'd simply choose The Star's link. kawaputratorque 09:20, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
Also, according to Bursa Malaysia, they no longer are called "Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange", but are now known as "Malaysia Exchange". So, i believe the symbol should be "MYX", instead of "KLSE". kawaputratorque 09:44, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
Fully agree with the idea Jannisri 11:18, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the feedback. In a few days I'll start this template and look around for articles on Malaysian listed companies to place this template. It's going to link to The Star for now but it isn't final. Here is how it's going to look like (example):

  • Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) (MYX: 5347) is the largest electricity utility company in Malaysia and also the largest power company in Southeast Asia with...

One more thing, please check out the history of Template:Hkex. The editors mentioned about naming conventions and they prefer the "common" one (SEHK). In our case, many might not have heard of MYX and may type {{klse|5347}} instead of {{myx|5347}}. So should I create 2 templates (and redirect KLSE)? Hytar 18:03, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

Thats cool Hytar. About using "KLSE" or "MYX", i think we should use whichever is the official symbol. If there is no official symbol, maybe u can use whichever. I think its not necessary to make 2 templates. Its your call. Another thing, why do u use the number ticker instead of alphabet tickers? E.g: (MYX: 5347), instead of (MYX: TENAGA). Is this the convention used? But, im fine with any really. Good luck! kawaputratorque 06:55, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

Our stock quote is in 4-digit number, unlike the States alphabet system. Anyway I've decided to stick to MYX since it's "official". Besides, I'll start the template (and place them in articles), while others follow suit... I'll deal with any changes later, after more feedbacks. -- Hytar (talk) 19:50, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

Finally, the template is created! Any assistance of placing the template in hard-to-find Malaysian companies (in Wikipedia) is welcomed. Hytar 19:35, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

Great job Hytar! I will add those tickers whenever i come across a listed company. kawaputratorque 16:10, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

November collaboration

Hi guys, we need more votes to determine which article we gonna collaborate on for November. So please vote. As u might know, the collaboration thing is for 1 month, but today is already 14 Nov. I was thinking that we just have the collaboration for the whole of December. This means, we close the voting process on 30 Nov. Just an idea. kawaputratorque 06:15, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

The Southeast Asian cinema task force was recently started as a joint project of WikiProject Films and WikiProject Southeast Asia. Editors who are writing about the Malaysian films are welcome to join the project, where they will find support for collaboration on new articles and the expansion and promotion of existing articles. — WiseKwai 11:26, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

Interwiki

Most of the articles under WikProject Malaysia do not have any interwiki connection with the Malay Wikipedia. I would like to suggest that this will taken into consideration when composing articles related to Malaysia as these articles are also available in the Malay version. dromoz.com has been blacklisted due to spamming

There are still over 500 links to it on ~250 main space pages, mainly articles about Malaysian locations. I am going to start removing those links or making them non-clickable, since the pages can't be edited/saved while they contain a blacklisted URL. The original report of problems with this domain may be found here. --Versageek 19:34, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Im sorry im not sure what constitute "spam". The dromoz links provide maps for the many different geolocations in Malaysia. The website doesnt appear to be advertising anything or promoting any product or website. It doesnt seem to be consistent with WP:SPAM. If anything it looks like it is more of a matter or WP:EL. The user who placed these links (User:Thisisjonathanchan) appears to have been indefinitely blocked for innocently (?) placing these links, and he wasnt even given any warning. Is there something i am missing here? kawaputratorque 19:53, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
