Road articles
Would anyone mind if I updated various road articles to use infobox road rather than the number of different templates that are used at the moment. The main advantage is consistency. -- WOSlinker (talk) 19:51, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, please do. Would you need any help with it? BejinhanTalk 04:08, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

No article?
I was suprised to find that there was no article on English Wikipedia about the Malay language version; Malay Wikipedia is just a redirect.
I noticed this bit of an attempt; I also had a look for references, but there is not much in English. I suspect there are news sources to show notability in Malay, but I can't speak it...
Wouldn't this be a nice little article to get going - and preferably >1500B so it could be a "Did you know"?
Anyway - just a passing thought; I can't really do it myself because of the language problem. Cheers, Chzz ► 16:14, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
- I've added it into my to-do list. Hopefully it'll be done within the next few weeks or so. Any article that I write must have a DYK. :) Thanks for the suggestion. BejinhanTalk 04:27, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
- Started the draft page here. And yes, it's difficult finding reliable sources, even in the Malay language. That would be a big problem. I can't even find the founding date of the Wikipedia, other than what was said in the Indonesian Wikipedia article. Even then, the ref was a link to the history of the Malay Wikipedia's Main Page. :( Anyone can edit the draft page, just make sure reliable sources are cited. News pertaining to Malaysia
This is an idea, since we're having a monthly newsletter and there's not much project news to fill it out, why don't we have news relating to Malaysia too? The big news, of course. Like if there's a by-election, general election, disaster, etc. Anything notable enough for a mention. If not, having a 3-point newsletter would be waste of time. A 2nd suggestion would be have it as a bi-monthly newsletter. And make the Collab of the Month bi-monthly too. Any thoughts/better suggestions? BejinhanTalk 04:25, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
- It might be OK, if it linked to relevant Wikipedia articles. I'd keep it brief and take care to be neutral though. Chzz ► 17:00, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
- 2010 in Malaysia would be a good place to start with. Cerevisae (talk) 02:25, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
- Chzz, that was what I was thinking too. My notability yardstick for it would be a Wikipedia article. Cerevisae, thanks for the link. If there are no objections, I will start putting in major events in the Sept newsletter. BejinhanTalk 06:20, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
- No objection from me, certainly - I think it is a great idea; it might help get more people interested and involved too. Chzz ► 12:51, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
Recruiting users
Currently there are 21 active project members. However not all are actively participating in the project(ex. Collab of the Month) and I was thinking that maybe we could recruit users. They don't have to be Malaysians or anyone living in Malaysia. They could just be someone interested in helping improve WikiProject Malaysia(and Wikipedia). We could hold a 'contest' and award a barnstar to the user with the highest successful referrals and the user with the highest referrals. BejinhanTalk 06:35, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
Jimbo meetup
This might be of interest to the Wikipedian Malaysians. Jimbo will be coming to KL(for the first time) this September 27-28. He might be available to meetup with the Wikipedians here. Is there anyone interested in meeting up with him? Please let me know as soon as possible. Bejinhan talks 04:08, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
Standards of English
I noticed that there hasn't been any mention (and apologies if I missed it) of improving the atrocious standards of English present in almost all Malaysian articles. I have taken it upon myself to personally correct a couple of pages, but honestly just reading those articles was embarrassing. I suggest this be given a higher priority in revamping Malaysian wikipages. I will correct those I come across (and am open to counter-corrections, of course), but we need more active English-literate users to do this as well (it sounds like a mentally deficient llama wrote some of these).—Preceding unsigned comment added by 120.141.121.80 (talk • contribs) 03:48, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for your comments and your contributions to improve the quality of pages related to Malaysia. I had to admit that this problem is quite widespread and cannot be completely eliminated due to lack of enthusiastic contributors on Malaysia wiki-pages. However, we will strive our best in this aspect.Cerevisae (talk) 05:16, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, it's too bad. I want to get that tackled according to our plan page but we have a contributor problem. :p At this point of time, this project has 23 "active" members. But not all are enthusiastic about improving the articles concerned. It's kinda difficult to work with and I can't run a one-man show. Bejinhan talks 05:27, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
- Unfortunately bad English is only one of a number of problems with Malaysian-related articles, after copyvios (three CCIs this year), POV-pushing and BLP violations. Nonetheless, it would be good to fix it in a focused way. I'll have a think over the next 24 hours.--Mkativerata (talk) 05:48, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

Photo requests
I have two photo requests related to airlines of Malaysia:
- Malaysia Airlines Admin 1 Building - MAS Complex A - Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport - Subang, Selangor
- This Flickr image http://www.flickr.com/photos/29428354@N08/2743957852/ is of the building, but it is copyrighted. I have tried to contact this guy to get him to relicense, but so far I had no response

Proposal: Collab of the Month
As of now, there are three nominations with only one support for each. Should there be a "rule" whereby a limited amount of nominations is allowed so that instead of nominating what we want, we should also !vote for the other nominations? Having multiple nominations with a tied number of votes is going to get the collab to nowhere and that would mean another month without a collab. Bejinhan talks 04:53, 14 September 2010 (UTC)
WikiProject Malaysia article edit drive
As I mentioned in an earlier posting here, it might be a good idea to have a competition with the purpose of drawing and encouraging editors to edit articles within this project scope. This is something that the Guild of Copy Editors is having and they have received a good response. I participated in their July drive and it was good. Barnstars were awarded to participants based on the number of articles they edited and the length of those articles. I am thinking of drafting a page based on that drive for this project. Are there any objections? Someone, please reply. I'm tired of talking to the wall here. Bejinhan talks 10:46, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
- Sounds good - I think this is the kind of project that has something for everyone. --Mkativerata (talk) 10:50, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
Malaysia articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release
Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.
We would like to ask you to review the Malaysia articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.
We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Lat as a Featured Article Candidate
Hi, I am pretty sure most, if not all of you, know of Lat. After going through much work, it is now being nominated to be a Featured Article. I would appreciate comments on the article's suitability to be an FA, based on the criteria WP:WIAFA, or suggestions to further improve the article towards that goal. Please read the article and proceed to Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Lat/archive1. Thank you. Jappalang (talk) 06:46, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
Collab question
Right now, we have 3 open collab nominees. All of them only received votes from their nominators. Since they're tied at 1, I guess that we can't take any of them. But that'll also mean another month without a collab. So any suggestions about a tied collab? While you all are at that, please go to the collab page and vote for your choice to help break the deadlock. Bejinhan talks 13:00, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
- I wonder whether we can make the edit drive you suggested above the "collaboration" for the next month. It could be a good place to start and would allow gnomish editors who aren't confident building content to participate. --Mkativerata (talk) 16:47, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
- Do you mean collab. to write the draft page? Bejinhan talks 11:31, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
- I was thinking more like collaborate to do the copyediting work. Of course, non-members could join in, there'd be the lure of shiny barnstars. --Mkativerata (talk) 22:20, 26 September 2010 (UTC)
- Ah, yes ok. I started the draft page here. What about if we asked for everyone's input as a collab? It needs expansion and other opinions. Bejinhan talks 05:40, 27 September 2010 (UTC)

Malay word
Hi Project Malaysia members, I wonder if anyone here is good in the Malay language or knows someone who is? At Project Gastropods some of us are trying to get the article Dog conch up to GA status. Apparently this species of sea snail is called "siput gonggong" in Malay, which seems to mean howling or barking snail. I am wondering if that basically just means "dog snail", since clearly the snail does not actually bark or howl? Any help would be much appreciated. Invertzoo (talk) 23:04, 30 September 2010 (UTC)
Hi all! I was recently in Malaysia and spoke there against censorship, and as a part of my research I read our entry Censorship in Malaysia.
One concern that I have about the entry is the list of banned movies, which is not well referenced. The list is referenced almost entirely to IMDB, but when you click on the link, the page at IMDB is blank. I suppose it used to not be blank, but it is blank now.
I am thinking that the list needs to be removed and then rebuilt with valid sourcing, and I suppose people here would have the best knowledge and resources to be able to do that.--Jimbo Wales (talk) 20:21, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks Jimbo. I can't find any reliable consolidated list of banned films, although IMBD does seem to have some kind of categorisation: [1] But of course IMDB isn't reliable anyway. I agree it should be rebuilt, but it'll need to be done by ad hoc sourcing (ie individual sources for each entry, such as [2] for Schindler's list). This is probably the only way it can be done, especially because I strongly suspect Malaysia has banned many more films than are currently on the list (no value judgement there). The list would be better of as a prose account of notable examples of Malaysia banning prominent films. --Mkativerata (talk) 22:55, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for that head-up, Jimbo. Instead of providing a list of banned films as a ref, I think it is better to ref them one by one. I've started on it. Anyone who wants to add refs is very much welcome to do so. Bejinhan talks 06:21, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
- I think this needs to go into the next newsletter. I couldn't find any sources for some of the movies listed... Bejinhan talks 07:17, 2 October 2010 (UTC)

Dewan Rakyat SVG follow-up
Here's the archived discussion. I'm glad that the SVG is available now, after a week of fixing the thumbnail rendering. Of course, it's now placed in the appropriate article. I should also note that the image should not be updated to reflect changes, because it serves as a snapshot of the 2008 election results.
Another SVG image is planned for the current (and hopefully up-to-date) Dewan Rakyat representation, which might be uploaded soon. Regarding the state assembly seats, I have a test-image here. Hexagons are assembled but boundaries are not complete. In the near future, the EC might redraw the boundaries of constituencies based on the 2010 census, so that might add hexagons into some images. Meanwhile, any suggestions on my SVG mini-project are welcomed. Hytar (talk) 16:23, 20 October 2010 (UTC)

WikiProject cleanup listing
I have created together with Smallman12q a toolserver tool that shows a weekly-updated list of cleanup categories for WikiProjects, that can be used as a replacement for WolterBot and this WikiProject is among those that are already included (because it is a member of Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions). See the tool's wiki page, this project's listing in one big table or by categories and the index of WikiProjects. Svick (talk) 20:27, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
Honorifics, titles, chief, etc.
A lot of Malaysian statesman articles are listed with their honorifics and/or titles, and the redirects don't necessarily exist. When I look for Malaysian names in en.wiki, I search for just the name, dropping tun, datu, and variants; however, I just went to clean up an article and found that most of the statesman names include the honorifics, explaining why I thought there were a lot of basic articles missing. While this may be culturally common, using honorifics and titles, it's not standard for wikipedia, and they should be removed.
And, yes, other stuff exists, the use of doctor, especially, when dealing with western MDs. And this should also be cleaned up.
--Kleopatra (talk) 00:03, 8 November 2010 (UTC)
- In general I agree, but we have to be a little careful here: there are some people like Tunku Abdul Rahman where the honorific title is virtually inseparable from the name and by far the most common way to refer to them, and WP:NCP makes an explicit exception for them. Probably the best way forward is to draw up a (short) "whitelist" of names that can keep their titles, and clean up the rest. Jpatokal (talk) 02:23, 8 November 2010 (UTC)
- This example is a little unfair, because this is both the affectionate vernacular name, and his given name is so common that it would make an important fundamental article with lots of hits one of en.wiki's infamous and non-navigable redirects. So, I agree not to argue for dropping Tunku on this article!
- I think, however, that most ministers of state, lower level politicians, and some other prime ministers can drop many of the honorifics and titles. I think a white list would be good. Sadly, I can probably help with very little of it, but I think it could clean-up the Malaysia articles. --Kleopatra (talk) 02:42, 8 November 2010 (UTC)
- For starters, I have created this page for the list of articles with these honorific titles. It needs some working on and once we've compiled everything, we can start creating redirects or moving the pages. Sounds okay? Bejinhan talks 05:42, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
Page Move
Dewan Undangan Negeri was recently moved to State Legislative Assembly, then to State Legislative Assembly of Malaysia. Thoughts on this? Chipmunkdavis (talk) 08:59, 15 November 2010 (UTC) The individual state pages were moved too. Chipmunkdavis (talk) 09:02, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
- Why a move without consensus? Can the mover provide any reliable sources to justify that move? Bejinhan talks 14:49, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
- Technically a move doesn't need consensus to be done. If undone however, per WP:BRD there needs to be discussion. I wasn't sure enough to revert myself, hence bringing it here. Chipmunkdavis (talk) 15:06, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
- For the individual state pages, I have no problem with either usage since a simple google search would show that the term "State Legislative Assembly" is quite commonly used especially by the local english media. However, for the main page "State Legislative Assembly of Malaysia", i think it should be renamed again to "State Legislative Assemblies of Malaysia" since the article talks about not one, but many legislative assemblies in Malaysia. ќמшמφטтгמtorque 01:00, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

Proposed move for First Lady of Malaysia
Hi, i plan to rename the article First Lady of Malaysia to Spouse of the Prime Minister of Malaysia. Guideline on town names needed
User:DarknessVisitor recently moved a bunch of towns in Sabah to Town, Sabah, Malaysia, one over previous consensus (albeit limited) for Town, Malaysia. I think that per the general naming policy that article names should only be as specific as necessary, towns that need disambiguation are placed at Town, Malaysia. In case there are multiple towns of the same name in Malaysia, it should be Town, State/Territory, with the Town, Malaysia as a disambiguation. Thoughts? Chipmunkdavis (talk) 14:29, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
- I have reverted 2 of the moves done without consensus: Papar and Beaufort. I think there are more. Im not sure if we need additional guidelines on this as it seems that WP:PLACE has covered it. But that guideline is a bit too long and general. But i have no problem with having a Malaysia-specific guideline. Perhaps we can put it here WP:MOS-MY. ќמшמφטтгמtorque 15:18, 15 February 2011 (UTC)
- I reverted Pitas, Malaysia, which should cover all the towns. We could put a country entry at WP:PLACE as well, just for clarification. We may also need to find a guideline for islands. Do we note them by Name island, just Name, or even Pulau Name? Chipmunkdavis (talk) 17:24, 15 February 2011 (UTC)
- Yea we could add Malaysia to WP:PLACE. For islands, in my view, it think its best if we use "X Island" format because (1) this is the English language wikipedia and (2) for the sake of consistency - if we just use the name without the word "Island", there may be instances where there may be multiple places with the same name as the island, making it necessary to disambiguate by adding "Island" at the back. Then, there may be article titles with the word "Island" and some without it. ќמшמφטтгמtorque 01:27, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

Mind the BM versions of articles
I see that the Malaysia-related articles on the English Wikipedia have generally improved further than I last checked. Quite a number of them are far ahead of their Bahasa Melayu equivalents. Thus I'm here to make a request for those who are fluent in BM to translate the best Malaysia-related articles (such as Kampung Boy, which I just looked at) to BM for the Malay Wikipedia. I hope that someone fluent enough in BM can translate the whole articles to BM. Alternate scripts
There was a massive additions of alternate scripts to many Malaysia-related articles by User: Yk Yk Yk. Notably adding Tamil, chinese and Jawi scripts. I disagree to additions of alternative scripts because (1) they are unofficial scripts; (2) the only apparent purpose of inclusion in wikipedia is for decorative purpose, i doubt many chinese, indians and malays can even read those characters; (3) this is the English wikipedia; (4) they are not widely used, except perhaps in official documents; (5) there are also other languages in Malaysia, should we add those as well?; (6) they clutter up the lead. Any thoughts? ќמшמφטтгמtorque 00:59, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
While we're at it, we might as well come up with a guideline on this coz this has been an ongoing issue for years. ќמшמφטтгמtorque 01:01, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
I agree with you. This issue (albeit in a slight different way) has been cropping up in the Malaysia article every now and then. I don't see why such scripts should be added. Firstly, like you said, this is the English Wikipedia. This is not a translation dictionary or whatnot. Only the official name should be placed at the infobox. Secondly, to those who say they should be added, how do we determine what languages are added? Just because Chinese, Tamil, and Malay constitute the language used by the 3 main races doesn't mean they are the only languages used in the country. Why don't we add in all the other languages as well? Might as well list out all the languages (which probably amounts to more than 4)! So far, at the Malaysia article, we have managed to counter such scripts mainly because those wanting to add them do not have a strong rationale for doing so. Yes, I think it's time for such a discussion. Maybe not wiki-wide. Just for WikiProject Malaysia. Bejinhan talks 02:00, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
I have been reading the guidelines and unfortunately, this seems to be allowed. The only problem now we're having is all the alternate names in the infoboxes. Malaysia-related topics have plenty of those! I checked out a few and they had Malay and English names. This is the English Wikipedia, people! This is not the Malay Wikipedia. Why have the Malay names? Bejinhan talks 02:04, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
- Just to add my opinion: I actually don't quite agree with it too. Previously, other users (notably Fookjian95) added these vernacular names to the infoboxes of the articles (his justification here). I completely disagreed with that since Chinese and Tamil are not official languages and promptly removed them. In the last 24 hours, an anonymous user began reverting my edits (here), that's why I added the vernacular names to the lead paragraphs as a compromise. - Yk (talk) 06:27, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
- To answer User:Bejinhan's question on why Malay names are present in the infoboxes: because Malay is the official language. Look up South Africa and European Union, they have names in more than 10 languages in their infoboxes because they're all official. - Yk (talk) 06:30, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
- This is the English Wikipedia. Whether Malay is the official language or not doesn't matter. There is no guideline that states official languages should be added in the infobox. In my opinion, I don't think it should be added. The English Wikipedia is for the English-speaking world. They definitely won't be able to identify the Malay terms, for ex. Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur. Bejinhan talks 06:57, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
- It's just convention, I guess. Look at the articles for all the countries (e.g. Spain, not everyone knows what Reino de España means; Malta where English is one of two official languages). As for administrative subdivisions, I can point out a whole host of articles: Kaliningrad Oblast, Bavaria, Jalisco, Quebec, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, etc. They're all in English Wikipedia too. - Yk (talk) 07:18, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
- Now another user (User talk:Acecon) has reverted my edits and placed the alternative scripts back in the infoboxes. We really need a consensus on this, and an external (non-Malaysian) opinion. Again, I reiterate my stand:
- I oppose placing non-official language scripts in infoboxes per User:Kawaputra's arguments above and because it goes against Wikipedia convention. If people make up their own rules there would be a proliferation of languages in any infobox just because a small number of people think it's justified.
- I weakly oppose placing names in non-official languages in the lead paragraphs (again per Kawaputra's argument), yet I feel that if it is useful and relevant information, it should be kept.

- Now another user (User talk:Acecon) has reverted my edits and placed the alternative scripts back in the infoboxes. We really need a consensus on this, and an external (non-Malaysian) opinion. Again, I reiterate my stand:
- I think Malay should be in infoboxes. It is Malaysia's official language. But not Tamil, Chinese, etc. The [applicable guideline has no hard and fast rule. However, I'm not a fan of cramping the lead of the article with multiple scripts for the reasons on which everyone seems to agree above. --Mkativerata (talk) 19:50, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
Just to clarify my position, i think alternative scripts/language (Chinese, Jawi, Tamil) should be removed from the infobox AND lead. The available guideline allowing alternative names in the lead specifically states that: "Nevertheless, other names, especially those used significantly often (say, 10% of the time or more) in the available English literature on a place, past or present, should be mentioned in the article, as encyclopedic information." I doubt the Chinese or Jawi version of Malaysian place names ever appears in any English literature or publications. I dont really have a problem with the inclusion or exclusion of Bahasa Malaysia in the lead or infobox. We all seem to be in agreement on the exclusion of alternative scripts in the infobox. Only left to decide on the lead and the inclusion of BM. ќמшמφטтгמtorque 01:55, 23 April 2011 (UTC)
- Seems like all the users who placed the alternate names in the infoboxes that I invited to this conversation aren't willing to make their cases. Based on the current consensus, I will remove the Chinese & Tamil names from the infoboxes after 24 hours. - Yk (talk) 04:00, 24 April 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for informing them YK. ќמшמφטтгמtorque 01:04, 26 April 2011 (UTC)
Shall we try to conclude the discussion on the remaining issues? (1) scripts/languages in the Lead; (2) bahasa Malaysia in Lead and Infobox. (1) It appears that most agree that alternative scripts and languages should also be removed from the Lead (ie Jawi, Chinese, Indian) with just minor reservations; can we agree on this? (2) It also appears that Mkativerata and YK agree that BM should remain in the article (lead and/or infobox) but Bejinhan opposes this. ќמшמφטтгמtorque 01:04, 26 April 2011 (UTC)
- That seems to be a good summary. I don't think we're desperate for a resolution on the second remaining issue (BM in the lead) -- it is the infobox that has been causing the most problems and there is a clear consensus for that now. --Mkativerata (talk) 01:11, 26 April 2011 (UTC)
- Re. the second issue, I am thinking of starting an RfC for it. I think that some guidelines is needed re. foreign languages (languages other than English) in the infobox. Bejinhan talks 02:26, 26 April 2011 (UTC)
- I will remove the alternate scripts since consensus is clear. I welcome the RfC on the inclusion of official languages as there seems to be no solid guidelines on the issue, only convention. - Yk (talk) 02:36, 26 April 2011 (UTC)
- I also support RFC for this. Meanwhile, i was thinking of solidifying or codifying the result of this discussion here :WP:MOS-MY, rather than just relying on this discussion for any likely future disputes. If anyone can think of a better place to put this up, please suggest. Thanks. ќמшמφטтгמtorque 03:58, 26 April 2011 (UTC)

Proposal to promote the Malaysian Manual of Style
Hi. I was hoping to promote the Wikipedia:Manual of Style (Malaysia-related articles) into a proper wikipedia guideline. Similar to those found here Category:Wikipedia Manual of Style (regional). The procedure is to start an RfC. But before i do that i was hoping to obtain the views of project members here, whether you would support the idea or not. I would appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks. ќמшמφטтгמtorque 04:38, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
- I support. - Yk (talk) 15:57, 30 April 2011 (UTC)
- Sounds like a plan. Finish a draft before you RfC though, it will be easier to create then discuss than to discuss then create. Chipmunkdavis (talk) 16:04, 30 April 2011 (UTC)
- Yes. I think it is already quite complete now. The major issues involving Malaysian articles have been addressed there: widespread use of honorifics, multiple languages, names, etc. I'd give it another few weeks maybe before I submit it for RFC. ќמшמφטтгמtorque 02:39, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

Need an image of South Asian spider Phaeacius
I am working on an article about Phaeacius, a very unusual jumping spider from South Asia and especially Malaysia. There are no images on Commons and none at FIST - the spider is very well camouflaged and hard to find. Most of the images on Google Images are "all right reserved", and the two that are not "all right reserved" have licences that are not usable for Wikipedia as they forbids commercial use and derivatives. Does any one know how to contact Wikipedians in South Asian, who might be help in finding images of Phaeacius. --Philcha (talk) 11:47, 5 May 2011 (UTC)
First line
I noticed there is an unwritten convention among Wikipedia users who edit Malaysia-related articles (including myself) to wikilink and unbold Malay styles and titles in the first line of articles:
I suggest not wikilinking it and boldfacing honorific prefixes in the first line.
If you take a look at this article:
The first line gives his full name, then Baron Mandelson, but not Lord Mandelson (which is in the infobox), when in fact, the only way people address Barons in the UK is Lord [name/territorial designation].
My point is, how many Malaysians actually know about how to address Lords in the UK? Most of them would probably think it not wrong to say Lord Peter Mandelson (completely wrong). But then if you reverse that proposition: how many British actually know about honorific prefixes such as Datuk in Malaysia? I would say the number lies around the same percentage of Malaysians unaware of how to address British peers. Yet Malaysia-related articles have to go out of their way explaining this and that, resulting in the first line looking very busy (wikilinks, bold and unbold text). Don't you all see the cultural bias here?
By the way, for UK-related biographies with honorific prefixes, they don't wikilink and unbold Sirs and Dames:

Malaysia FAC?
Hello fellow wikiproject members,
Our article Malaysia is I think getting close to being able to take a run at Featured article status. It'd be very appreciated if anyone wishes to help in any way. Obviously there is copyediting, but it may be worth seeing whether the information currently in the article is WP:DUE, if there's any information not in that should be included, etc. It would also be good if editors could look at the history section and see whether in their opinion it is a useful summary, as there have been some differing opinions on this. Thanks,
Chipmunkdavis (talk) 04:36, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
- That's great. Hope it breezes through FAC... and hopefully, some of those editors stop persisting on adding images where they aren't supposed to be. It wouldn't be good to have an edit war while the FAC is going on. Bejinhan talks 05:38, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

Yang di-Pertuan Agong
It was brought to my attention in another discussion that we use Yang di-Pertuan Agong to refer to that position in many of our articles. However, while I initially thought that is what they were mostly referred to as, I looked around and it seems many places simply refer to the position as "King". I don't think Yang di-Pertuan Agong should be moved, but I'm wondering if it might be better to simply say "the King" (King) instead of "the Yang di-Pertuan Agong" in prose. Any thoughts or wider experience with references to him in english? Chipmunkdavis (talk) 23:11, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
- Yeap. The standard format in the Malaysian English media seems to be "Yang di-Pertuan Agong" in first mention, "King" in all subsequent mentions. —Yk Yk Yk talk ~ contrib 23:15, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

Banknotes of Malaysia
Hi WP:MY. I'd like some advice regarding the use of banknote images in Malaysian ringgit. With the recent announcement of new currency designs, I've been actively updating said article, and one of the things I plan of doing is to add MYR banknotes into the article to illustrate design changes between the four series released. With Wikipedia's fair use policy though, these images might be removed. BNM outlined in Section 27a of the Central Bank Act 1958 that the use of these images need their permission in advertisement, which I believe for Wikipedia's purpose isn't. The copyright is still held by BNM. What do you think would be an alternative to getting these images into the article? Thanks. — Blue。 04:46, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
- I don't see why we can't use it. I suggest asking for copyright advice at Commons. Chipmunkdavis (talk) 10:48, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
- Got response. It's best that we minimize the use of banknote images for the article. Images released by the copyright holder should be enough. — Blue。 12:58, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
WikiWomen's History Month
Hi everyone. March is Women's History Month and I'm hoping a few folks here at WP:Malaysia will have interest in putting on events (on and off wiki) related to women's roles in Malaysia's history, society and culture. We've created an event page on English Wikipedia (please translate!) and I hope you'll find the inspiration to participate. These events can take place off wiki, like edit-a-thons, or on wiki, such as themes and translations. Please visit the page here: WikiWomen's History Month. Town names
Is there a reason we disambiguate town names TOWN, Malaysia instead of TOWN, STATE like a lot of other countries do? This might be an Eastern thing, but it seems to me to be more conventional to use the negeri as the disambiguator. I checked this on Google with my home town, and got 748,000 for "Miri, Malaysia" and "1,510,000 for "Miri, Sarawak". Why are we doing it this way? Icarustalk 14:07, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
- It's normal disambiguation. We don't disambiguate if we don't have to. We disambiguate to Malaysia if it conflicts with somewhere outside or Malaysia or something else. We disambiguate to state if there's more than one in Malaysia. And so on, I suppose, if needed. CMD (talk) 15:59, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
- Right, but why are we disambiguating in that particular way? TOWN, Malaysia looks odd to me. Why aren't we doing it like Canada, Australia, American (and some other) articles do it (TOWN, STATE)? That would be in-line with local custom. Icarustalk 08:56, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
- Because that's how standard geographical disambiguation works, per WP:NCGN. It may look odd to you to see "Town, Malaysia" (and I assume you are from Sarawak, by your userpage), as you live in Malaysia, and thus will most often encounter media which assumes the reader will think the places being discussed are in Malaysia. For an international audience, this will not be the case. CMD (talk) 10:14, 5 March 2012 (UTC)
- So why do we put titles like Nogales, Sonora instead of Nogales, Mexico? Or Atella, Basilicata instead of Atella, Italy? Or Colonia, Yap instead of Colonia, Micronesia? Or Hipólito Yrigoyen, Misiones instead of Hipólito Yrigoyen, Argentina? I would think those would be in the same boat? Icarustalk 17:08, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
- There's more than one Nogales in Mexico, and more than one Hipólito Yrigoyen in Argentina. As for the other two barely edited stubs, they should be moved. Their titles definitely don't help me identify them. CMD (talk) 08:02, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

Melaka vs Malacca?
Recently the article Malacca Sultanate was given an expanded rewrite, which is a very laudable and badly-needed effort. However, the editor Orhanghazi had changed the spelling of Malacca to Melaka in the title as well as the entirety of the article body; the reason given is that "Melaka" is a more commonly used term and the Malaysian government-sponsored Encyclopedia - The Encyclopedia of Malaysia - wrtten by top Malaysian academicians, also used "Melaka". As far as WP:MOS-MY guideline is concerned, editors should generally use English names, except when it's more commonly known in its Malay name. Does 'commonly' necessarily mean within the Malaysian context or otherwise? We didn't use Melaka for the strait nor the state. — Blue。 07:35, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- Commonly means within an international context. Our articles should use Malacca unless there's a very specific reason not to in any instance, such as when quoting a source. CMD (talk) 10:27, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- I suppose the said article should then be edited to reflect this. However the original titles have become redirects and I'm not sure whether its the "Sultanate of Malacca" or "Malacca sultanate" is proper for the article. — Blue。 10:56, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- More recently published travel books such as Lonely Planet, Periplus and frommers as well as academic writings, no longer use 'Malacca'. CIA World Factbook have been using 'Melaka' for years, and even foreign scholars like L. Andaya have been using the term since 1984.(سڠ ڤڠليڤور لارا (talk) 11:09, 29 November 2012 (UTC))
- The Factbook is a tool for diplomats, and will use the an English state name provided by the Malaysian government unless it has good reason to not do so. Note it still uses "Strait of Malacca". As for your other isolated examples, they're true, but as a google n-gram shows, Malacca is historically completely dominant, and remains the most common term. At any rate, that should be determined on the main Malacca article, not a subsidiary. That it is a historical article makes the "Malacca" spelling even more relevant. CMD (talk) 11:49, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- Being dominant does not means its correct. Google books is rather a pathetic academic source in writing the Histroy of Malay Kingdoms, and using google n-gram cannot justify the internationality of the term. Im surprised that you refer to Lonely Planet as "isolated example", how isolated it is?LOL. I completely agree that Malacca Straits is the more commonly used term, but Malacca Sultanate and Malacca State is an obsolete term based on corrupted English spelling and only still in use by some general historian who does not specialized in Malay studies. Its just that most comprehensive records and writings on Melaka Sultanate use 'Melaka' not 'Malacca', for example, the thousands of pages translation of Ming Shilu by George Wade.سڠ ڤڠليڤور لارا (talk) 12:40, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- Wikipedia naming conventions aren't based on whether they're "correct" or not, but on whether they're the most used. This is laid out in WP:Commonname. An isolated example is a single publication, which the lonely planet is. As for the n-gram, it is although not definitive, quite a useful example of international english usage.
- I suppose the said article should then be edited to reflect this. However the original titles have become redirects and I'm not sure whether its the "Sultanate of Malacca" or "Malacca sultanate" is proper for the article. — Blue。 10:56, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- The BBC still uses Malacca: [5]. They shouldn't, but they do, and that's the point for WP:COMMONNAME -- what international English language sources say. --Mkativerata (talk) 19:15, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- And the WP:COMMONNAME says that to determine several alternative names, it is useful to observe the usage of major international organizations, major English-language media outlets, quality encyclopedias, major scientific bodies and journals. The usage of 'Melaka' can be observed here:- UNESCO - CIA - Lonely Planet 1 and 2 - (for those who may not know it, this is the largest travel book and digital media publisher in the world and all its publications that i ever read so far are using 'Melaka') - Encyclopedia of Malaysia as well as the writings of scholars like Andaya (A History of Malaysia), Barnard (Contesting Malayness), Milner (The Malays), Khoo Kay Kim (Malay society), Sneddon (The Indonesian language), Ooi Keat Gin ( Southeast Asia), Benjamin (Tribal Communities in the Malay World), Wade's Ming Shilu, majority of ISEAS publications and a variety of Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland. Malaysian Branch publications. سڠ ڤڠليڤور لارا (talk) 02:20, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
- A quick check through Google Scholar for the use of "Malacca" and "Melaka" shows that the former is cited about 20,000 results higher than the latter. Omitting the term "strait" and "straits" from the results shows "Malacca" is 10,000 results higher than "Melaka", possibly indicating a more commonly used term of Malacca in English-language academic papers. That's not the be-all-end-all, I admit. — Blue。 02:51, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
- Even if they were close, we currently use "Malacca", which should not be changed without consensus, and should definitely not be changed all over subarticles if it's not changed on the main article first. Consistency is criteria for article naming. CMD (talk) 17:30, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
- Then kindly change the main article "Malacca" to "Melaka", which is in line with UNESCO naming convention, to get the consistencyسڠ ڤڠليڤور لارا (talk) 18:32, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
- I'd suggest proceeding by opening up a requested move at Talk:Malacca. --Mkativerata (talk) 19:32, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
- Considering the precedent Burma remains at Burma despite complete UN recognition of the name, that UNESCO spells a city a certain way is not a strong argument. Wikipedia names articles by their WP:Commonname (further details found at WP:Article title). If you wish to change that, you'll have to discuss it at those pages. CMD (talk) 22:59, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
- Using only a google search is not a strong argument either. Ive presented many instances of usage of 'Melaka' by some major organizations and i have yet to come out with those official Melakan state English publications itself, that obviously use 'Melaka'. I admit that there are more English publications stuff that used Malacca in google books, (including the old ones dating back since the colonial era), but most of them are dealing with the sultanate's history in brief, and practically unreliable in re-writing the article. Most of the sources which i consider reliable, are the one from scholars specialized in Malay studies as I mentioned above, containing detailed descriptions of the Malay society and the sultanate. As a Google Ngram Viewer shows, 'Melaka sultanate' is contemporerily dominant, and the usage of 'Malacca sultanate' is declining. سڠ ڤڠليڤور لارا (talk) 01:49, 2 December 2012 (UTC)
- A google search isn't the argument by itself, it's data showing widespread usage, supporting the argument which is endorsed by wikipedia policy, of WP:Commonname. The n-grams are organised through time, so the age of the sources is accounted for. Looking at your ngram in all English shows a more mixed picture. I could throw a bunch of sources that use Malacca around, but it wouldn't prove much. The point is that no-one should go around changing placenames throughout wikipedia when there is no consensus to do so, and especially not when it is in opposition to an ubiquitous current usage. As Mkativerata said, if you want to change how we refer to Malacca/Melaka, you need to do so with an WP:RM at Talk:Malacca. CMD (talk) 02:29, 2 December 2012 (UTC)
- Do we revert the article back to the original name of Malacca Sultanate, or the Sultanate of Malacca for the time being? The latter seems more consistent to other "Sultanate of ..." articles. — Blue。 04:43, 2 December 2012 (UTC)
- And in the WP:COMMONNAME, observing the usage in major international organizations, major English-language media outlets, quality encyclopedias, major scientific bodies and journals, comes first (and all their examples i have shown above, indicating not only widespread but recognized usage ) - then after that only you can resort to some google search.سڠ ڤڠليڤور لارا (talk) 04:47, 2 December 2012 (UTC)
- I think CMD and Mkativerata had pointed out the obvious, that we should reach a consensus of WP:RM if we want to use Melaka instead of Malacca because it affects not just the Sultanate's article but every article and instances that mention the name in the whole of English Wikipedia. We can't have two different spellings referring to one subject. It's like using the word Melayu instead of Malay, Cina instead of Chinese and Pinang instead of Penang in the English articles. — Blue。 05:32, 2 December 2012 (UTC)
- I am perfectly aware with the need for WP:RM, neither I wish to maintain the current usage of Malacca and Malacca City in their respective articles either, its just that i need to highlight this issue extensively here first before proceeding to it. The usage of Melaka instead of Malacca is incomparable with those of Melayu instead of Malay and Cina instead Chinese, which I think would be realized by a normal primary school kid, LoL. Just like I said before, more extensive works in English on Melaka History that I encountered are using 'Melaka'. Ive proceeded with WP:RM anyway.cheers.سڠ ڤڠليڤور لارا (talk) 13:37, 2 December 2012 (UTC)
