Archiving for WT:SHIPS

Before I place the tag for MizaBot to get to work, I was concerned about our existing archives and whether they will cause any conflict with the bot? Specifically, I had to move archive pages 1-9 to /Archive 1 instead of /Archive01 etc so there are redirects in place. I also compacted 13 archive pages into the current 7 pages and pages 8-13 are currently blank [1]. In case it matters at this point I believe we will go with a 28 day time period and archive pages at about 200k in size. All the best :) --Brad (talk) 14:55, 1 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How long to start archiving?

I put the tag on my user talk page, and I was wondering how long it took it start archiving. Here's the code:

{{User:MiszaBot/config
|maxarchivesize = 120K
|counter = 1
|archive = User talk:QuasiAbstract/Archive%(counter)d
|algo = old(1m)
|minthreadstoarchive = 1
}}

~QuasiAbstract (talk/contrib) 16:02, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"1m"? What's that? The manual clearly states that only days and hours are supported. The bot runs on a daily basis (you really can figure that from its contribs) and will visit your page only if you fix the error. Миша13 16:27, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I missed that, thanks. (It was supposed to be month) ~QuasiAbstract (talk/contrib) 00:00, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

peer review

I was wondering if you could take some time out of your schedule to head over to the Heroes (TV series) talkpage and give us an honest peer review. The page has gone through some major changes in the last few months, and it would be fantastic if a prominent editor/contributor like yourself, could head over and give us at the Heroes Wikiproject some sound opinion and ideas on improvements for the page. We have all worked very hard at improving the page, and we need great outside, reliable and trustworthy users to come over and help us improve. I you are interested in joining the peer review discussion with other prominent users/contributors, much like yourself, please follow the link. Thank you very much for your help and your continued effort to improve Wikipedia and its quality! Archiving

I set up the Miszabot Archive code on my Talk Page. Could you check if I have done it right ? as it has not archived anything.

Thank you,

Tovojolo (talk) 09:44, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please see User:MiszaBot/Archive HowTo#Parameters explained and read about minthreadsleft and minthreadstoarchive - there's not enough threads on your talk page. Миша13 18:59, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This newsletter is ready to be released. Please distribute it as soon as you can. Thank you! iMatthew 2008 17:43, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Done. In future please double-check the newsletter when you make significant layout changes. You forgot to close the outer (nav) table with a |} and I had to make a second run with my bot to fix it. Миша13 19:01, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What did I do wrong?

What did I do wrong here? Something stupid I assume. Nothing was archived last night. Thanks. —Wknight94 (talk) 16:35, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Woops. Not sure how I did that. Thanks. —Wknight94 (talk) 18:43, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the placement of the MiszaBot config template which you altered to prevent the first section ("Read this before proposing new criteria") from ever being archived? Of course you'd know more about the workings of your own bot than I do, but I think it is the intention of the archive system at WT:CSD to not have that first section archived. Happymelon 18:50, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The template must be placed before the first header as the bot looks for it only in the page introduction. And sections are not archived only if they contain no valid timestamps. Миша13 19:08, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Month incrementing...

Just as a question... when MiszaBot archives, doe it use the sig date of the thread or the date the archive is done for %(monthnameshort)s? - J Greb (talk) 23:04, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It uses the last date out of all timestamps (signatures) in the thread. The run time is only relevant in determining the thread's age (for the old(...) function). Миша13 17:33, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK... that makes sense with what I'm seeing. Thanks, - J Greb (talk) 23:26, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not working for me

Sorry to bug you with this since it probably happens a lot, but Miszabot has stopped archiving my talk page... not sure where I went wrong. Help please? Nobody of Consequence (talk) 16:36, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is indeed a FAQ #1. Please see User:MiszaBot/Archive HowTo#Parameters explained and read about minthreadsleft and minthreadstoarchive - there's not enough threads on your talk page. Миша13 17:31, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pre-problem with Misza Bot

Please take a look at [2] — something went wrong! -- Lea (talk) 09:21, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Someone's been messing with ==thread headers== inside a <pre> environment (and I think also forgot to close the tag), which cause the thread to be decomposed into individual ones. Using an HTML entity that represents the equal sign is a solution (the bot does not have a built-in wikiparser to detect pre and nowiki blocks). Миша13 16:45, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The problem was actually in the preceding archiving (diff). Search the diff for "== Heading 1 ==". This was inside <pre> ... </pre> so it was a part of the section at [3]. MiszaBot II caused a misformatted page because it archived </pre> but left an open <pre>. I fixed the problem by moving the start of the section to the archive. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:57, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Help please

I had Wernabot which is no longer active. I am trying to set up Misza bot to archive my talk page but I can't seem to do it correctly. I asked for help from my mentor and it's still not working. Would you please help get this to work of my talk page for me? Thanks in advance, --CrohnieGalTalk 14:58, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you look at User:MiszaBot/Archive HowTo#Parameters explained you'll note that even if not specified the bot will use default values for minthreadsleft and minthreadstoarchive. Since minthreadsleft defaults to 5 and you only have 5 threads on your talk page currently, it will not archive. Your talk page meets the minimum of 2 for minthreadstoarchive but archiving these will leave less than 5 threads on the page. So to clarify, the bot will only archive if there are at least two threads older than your setting and there will be at least five threads/sections left on the page when it's done. Hope that helps. 86.21.74.40 (talk) 16:07, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks I understand and I copied this to my mentor who helped me set it up since we both didn't understand if it was working. One more question, should there be a notice on my talk page that it is archiving for me? I've seen others who use Miszabot and they have a box on the top saying so. Thanks so very much, --CrohnieGalTalk 17:34, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You can have such a tag, but it's not obligatory. It's more of a courtesy note, but people could "discover" the bot anyway by looking in the page's history. Usually an index of archives (either an {{archive box}} or a custom one like mine) is enough. Миша13 19:09, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Universities newsletter

Would you be able to add the WikiProject Universities newsletter to your bot's list of monthly things to do? If not, it's ok, but it would really save me a bunch of time! Let me know here, thanks! —Noetic Sage 20:36, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not a problem at all. Just signal me whenever it's copyedited and ready for delivery and I'll run it. I assume the delivery list is the participant list? Also, is there an opt-out list (if not, is one planned)? Миша13 20:51, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much! Yes, the participant list you linked to is the right one. The current opt out list is here. I usually deliver on or soon after the 31st of every month, and the code is == The WikiProject Universities Newsletter: Issue X (MONTH YEAR) ==
{{subst:Wikipedia:WikiProject Universities/Outreach/Newsletter link|MONTH YEAR}} —~~~~
where MONTH YEAR is equal to the month and year of the issue (e.g. February 2008) and X is equal to the roman numeral of the issue (e.g. VI). The edit summary should read:

You've had your rewrite notice up a while now and I was just wondering what the status is. Many are anxiously awaiting your ability to recognize the {{resolved}} template.↔NMajdantalk 14:53, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Most of the components are written, but works on integrating the bot are somewhat on hold for now as real-life issues aren't leaving me with enough free time. Миша13 19:52, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Archive

Misza have i done the configuration correctly, i mainly manually archive my talkpage, but decided that i should let your bot to do but could you check the configuration. Terra What do you want? 18:56, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've changed the 9 hours to 18 hours, is that fine, and thanks for correcting the code. Terra What do you want? 19:40, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't say a thread that's 18 hours old qualifies for archival; even WP:AN/I uses 24 hours and that's an extremely busy forum. Most people use a setting of several days (5 in my case) on their talkpages, if not weeks. But that's your decision to make. Миша13 19:48, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've increased it to 24 hours, mainly because i don't want my talkpage getting too long. Terra What do you want? 19:54, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Judging from the activity on your talk page, I don't predict it getting long anywhere soon. Besides, the bot won't even touch it unless there's more than a couple threads on it (or unless you adjust the minthreadsleft and minthreadstoarchive parameters; User:MiszaBot/Archive HowTo#Parameters explained). Also, not all people visit Wikipedia every day and they might consider it a wikiquette violation if their messages get archived before they have a chance to read the response. But then again, that's your decision, I'm only offering guidance. Миша13 20:02, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've changed it to 70 hours, that should be long enough now. Terra What do you want? 20:06, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why?

I uploaded the image I took myself, and tagged it as well.

Bearingbreaker92 | Talk 03:48, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you're referring to Image:Gallardo Superlegerra.jpg (why make me guess?), you forgot to remove the "no license" tag after retagging it. That's why OrphanBot removed it from articles. Aditionally, my deletion bot didn't have {{self}} on the list of free license tags. Миша13 09:48, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Extremely stupid question

Hi Misza

On the instructions for setting up archiving using your bots, you leave out one teeny tiny important piece of information: When does it kick in? How do we know if it is working? Does it happen immediately? Thanks Rfwoolf (talk) 09:26, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not that stupid question, but still, you could figure that out from the bots' contribs. They run once daily (twice for AN and AN/I) at preset hours. So, after placing a template, wait until the next cycle. The bot should run, provided of course that there is anything to archive. Миша13 21:38, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I have added a new subsection to the instructions recounting this information. Rfwoolf (talk) 08:11, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bot archival

Hi Misza. I hate to be a wet rag, but I always found bot archival to be mind-numbingly complicated, although I'm usually good with programming stuff. Could you set up the bot archive Commons:Café? If I see you go through with an example, it might help. Thanks a million. 64.178.99.246 (talk) 16:53, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. 64.178.96.168 (talk) 19:31, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

We keep trying to add a "resolved" section to this page, for the resolved cases, but we think the bot keeps wiping it out. Sometimes the "resolved" header even appears in the archives. Can you check this out? Maybe it doesn't like single =. RlevseTalk 02:07, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm having difficulties finding that in the page history. Can you provide an example diff? Thanks, Миша13 21:39, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Me too (it's had lots of edits lately), I'm put the section back in and will keep a close eye on it. RlevseTalk 23:58, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I've put it back. Can you look at the 00:11 edit and see if there's any reason the bot couldn't handle that setup? RlevseTalk 00:13, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's something different. At present, the bot only recognizes ==second level== threads. Thus, a =first level= section header was treated as a part of the previous thread and archived along with it (but only the header and not content). The sections under the =completed= section were archived normally, i.e. when their time came. After the supposed rewrite, the bot should be able to handle any level threads, but not yet. You can put the completed section on a subpage and transclude it on the main one for now. Миша13 19:37, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

BOT not wiping the resolved section

[6], it pulls threads from both resolved and non-resolved without wiping out the resolved header, must be people keep changing it. Thanks for checking. RlevseTalk 11:17, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
