A new map

Hi there, its been a while since we've spoken, but I have continued to enjoy your excellent work on Pennsylvannian landmarks when I come across them. You helped me greatly with some maps last year and I was wondering if you could help again. This should actually be a fairly simple request: I'm working in my userspace on an expanded and improved version of Expédition d'Irlande and really need a map showing Bantry Bay in Ireland. At its most basic, the map would need to be like Image:Bantry-Bay.PNG, (although without the political division, which did not exist in 1796) possibly similar to this great map you did for me last year Image:Battle of Tory Island.svg. If you were feeling a little more adventurous, it could look a little like File:Battle of Bantry Bay,11 May 1689-en.svg, although without the lines criss-crossing it (there is no point redawing lines for this campaign, the fleet routes were hopelessly muddled - even they didn't know where they were half the time). Any help you can give will be gratefully appreciated and if I can give you a hand in anyway then I'd be happy to perform any reviews or copyedits you need. It its to be that style of map, then labelling France, Britain and Ireland would be useful. Beyond that, its not a problem if the towns listed stay as they are, although it is essential that Bantry Bay, Brest, Cork and Plymouth are labelled. The only place I'd consider adding (and it isn't essential) is Spithead, the area of water immediately north of the Isle of Wight (where the British fleet was based). As I mentioned, there is no point trying to track the fleet's passage because not even they were sure where they were half the time. The map as it is is perfect in terms of the area it displays, because it clearly illustrates all of the places mentioned in the article. Is that everything you need? Flagship Niagara closing

I saw the newspaper reports, but did not see the PHMC report. If the Niagara is kept in port, it'll still be open as an exhibit at the museum. Some people have come up with novel ways to try and help drum up support. Hopefully, the state won't have to resort to closing historical sites to cut spending (I can think of a bunch of state salaries that could be cut instead, though). --​​​​D.B.^{talk•contribs} 03:41, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

I also see that the brig in Niagra is in danger of closing. Glad to know that PA is closing historic locations and at the same time opening casinos. Nice. It's really a shame. Captain Scott (and other matters)

Thank you for intervening and reverting the recent destructive editing on the Scott article. As you can see on the talk page, the editor concerned has "apologised", while continuing to post provocative remarks higher up. I will do my best to be patient - he may well be a very young editor - but I'd be obliged if you kept an eye on this situation, with a view to avoiding if possible an edit war.

On another matter: can you give me an English translation of "Die Saranzenin" - it's the title of an opera that Wagner never got round to writing.

Aurora mooring image

Thanks very much for doing this. I have replaced the former image. Would it be possible for you to comment on the article name change that someone has suggested? Personally I have no objection to either "SY Aurora's drift," or even "Drift of SY Aurora", the latter being close to my original title, way back. Before changing, though, I'd like another opinion. Joseph Priestley House

Done. I have done a pretty close sweep of the whole article, which I like a lot. I removed three or four terminal periods from captions that were single non-sentences, but I resisted making other direct changes. Instead, I have compiled a list much like I do at Peer Review. Where should I post it? I could leave it in my sandbox, where it is now, or I could copy-and-paste to the article talk page or anywhere else you'd like it. Just let me know. I posted it to the article talk page just now. I had read the article quickly a few months ago, but it was fun reading it down at the level of microscopic detail. You have included a lot of nice stuff about the native trails, the logging railroad, the penitentiary, and recreation. You will probably have seen the latest contributions to this page. I have made several attempts to interact with this editor with a view to meeting his concerns, but I see no point in trying further. This level of aggression, hostilty and false accusation is surely unacceptable. What is the best course of action now?

Thank you for the offer. Royalbroil said the same. I'm not sure if it'll be that useful for me though. On the occasions I have done vandal fighting, I like to see the diffs so I know what changes are made; I don't think I'd ever revert blindly. On the other hand, there have been a few times where a vandal has made a few edits to the same page and it's harder to unsnarl the mess with undo (this guy was quite impressive, in a bad way). Indian Lake, PA

Thanks for the help, explanation and AWESOME tutorial material.

I'm wrestling with what I need as a 'definitive source' for information on Indian Lake Borough, since we are Indian Lake Borough. I could have the Mayor issue a proclamation or Council vote on a declaration of fact. What do I do with it; post it on the Official Borough site, perhaps? I do not wish to be argumentative; these are real questions I'm unclear about. Your reference materials look super and maybe I'll find the answers there as I digest them.

I've stayed away from adding more up-to-date demographics, etc., than the 2000 census, over the concerns you mention. As for the links, I believe you are right; you can get everywhere you need to from the Official Borough site; it has been moved, however, to www.indianlakepa.us. The old url points to the new site, so it's OK. If you wish to correct it, I won't undo it though...  :)

There is a book on the Lake by the late John McIntyre. I'll check on the publisher. On the long drive home from Pgh to the Lake tonight I reflected and the light went on... I get it... think encyclopedia... We have a demographic and data sheet we put together for a recent Planning study which I will post on the Borough site as a reference. We have a bunch of data on the Planning Commission site but access to it requires registration so I knew not to link to it. Most locals use the community-service website as the real handy reference. What I need to do is step back and think about what info users will go/come to Wikipedia for, and which they will 'goggle' for. Facts on Wikipedia, and opinions/ads/issues they can search for.

I am extremely impressed with the effort that goes into keeping this 'right' and the wealth of quality info available; the least I can do is my part in what I/we contribute. Your patience and help is most appreciated. I apologize for being dense, but I get it now.

Every attempt by me, you and user Ottre has been thrown back in our faces. He repeatedly breaches the rules of behavior concerning civility and assumptions of good faith, and has clearly no intention of cooperating with anyone. I appreciate the efforts you have made to resolve the dispute, but I believe the time has come to take further action, to restore some sanity to this page and to allow the updating of the article to proceed. Non-prophet

I might even be a 501(c)(3). The truth is I've watched quite a few people linking or unlinking that very thing, and both groups seem to include a few fierce advocates. When I see the fierce ones coming, I hide in the bushes until it's safe to come out. On the other hand, I did notice the changes to the caption punctuation and couldn't resist sending off a kind note to the other editor. I pointed him/her to the relevant section of the MoS. And, oh yeah, I have been doing a bit of work here and there, User:RFD got me motivated by stubbing John Allen Wakefield, so I nommed Bad Axe massacre for GA and did a quick article on Elizabeth Armstrong (settler). I compiled some sources to fill out the red link at Neutral Ground (Iowa) in the template. Hi, I see you have placed Windber, PA's page under semi-protection. I understand it was because "Sterling" kept being added. I have family members from Windber and I can tell you that Sterling helped save the Polish Falcons. Black Moshannon State Park

You seem overly concerned with this page and ought to therefore just go away.

Your implication that I have engaged in:

"vandalism (including page blanking or addition of random text), spam, deliberate misinformation, privacy violations, personal attacks; and repeated, blatant violations of our policies concerning neutral point of view and biographies of living persons"

Is obviously very wrong. Why would you imply these things without any basis??

I thought you would like to see the number of page views for when White Deer Hole Creek and Joseph Priestley House where on the main page. The numbers, of course, mean nothing but its interesting to see them. White Deer Hole was viewed roughly 17,500 times and Priestley House was viewed 11,900 times. I like check the page views if anything of possible importance happens to the subject of an article, to see if there was any effect. Last January, Kinzua Bridge had a jump in views when it was mentioned on the History Channel. I have yet to have DYK to break 5,000 (I was close, though, with my latest), but I've haven't written of huge importance or interest. The number of page views for Emma Watson shows where most people's interest lie. But when I crunched the numbers, the number of page views on the initial day for the Priestley House had increased 32,000%, White Deer Hole Creek by 80,000% versus only 6,000% for Miss Watson. Forest Park

Thanks. I had been working on this one off and on for about a year, and I took it from PR to FAC without the GA step or sounding any klaxons. I had fun doing the map, which flummoxed me for a while. I assembled it from 30 Census maps at the 1.1-mile setting. Then I put them together like a jigsaw puzzle on a big canvas. I was surprised that this actually worked. To tell the truth, I'm not sure what I did. I sometimes proceed by trial-and-error until I hit upon something that works. I should take more notes. Right now I'm catching my breath, doing a few reviews, and fiddling with Oregon river and creek articles. Now and again I circle back to Tryon Creek. A week or so ago I visited the park along the creek to take some photos, and I got yet another map from someone at the park headquarters. He said that the reason I'm having trouble with the tributary names is that some of them are informal and unlikely to appear on maps. I ran into the same problem with Balch Creek. Totally unrelated subject: I've been thinking of this for a while, but haven't gotten around to talking with you for a long time. Last year, Omnedon and I moved all Minnesota townships to "_____ Township, _____ County, Minnesota" for the sake of consistency and clarity, so that all township articles in the state would be at the same naming format. What do you think about doing the same thing for Pennsylvania? As I work with Pennsylvania geography, especially with National Register of Historic Places in the state, I'm finding it tiresome to have to keep checking whether there's a county name attached to the township or not. PR backlog

I'm sorry I'm not doing much to reduce this at the moment. I am wrestling with the peer review of a long article (HMS Pinafore) that never made it to the backlog. I should be finished on that this weekend, so will try and weigh in against the backlog then. At the moment requests for PRs are coming in a lot faster than reviews are taking them out, so the backlog is likely to keep rising, unlike the British GNP. I was trying to figure out if the topic of entomological warfare should cover recent revelations about the use of insects in U.S. interrogations of foreign terrorism suspects. (see for instance:[1], or [2]), incidentally, the second article is by Jeffery A. Lockwood, who is probably the foremost scholar on the topic. Fishes at WP:PR

Hi Ruhrfisch, I see you're currently in the middle of doing the "no-transclusion-to-save-space" trick at WP:PR. While you're there, would you be able to take care of one other issue? Gobioides Broussonneti was created and a peer review opened, but it was then moved to Violet Goby and another peer review opened, so both Wikipedia:Peer review/Gobioides Broussonneti/archive1 and Wikipedia:Peer_review/Violet_goby/archive1 now exist. "Feel free to download the images we see to promote state parks, but be sure to credit the Pennsylvania Bureau of State Parks."[3][4] is kind of vague: which image? What about old photos like this one? Was it donated (and hence copyrighted by a non-federal employee since it could not be published before 1923; did its copyright expire or something)? Download, but what about use, commercial and non-commercial? Is their logo copyrighted? Your case is aided by "The contents of this server are considered public information."[5], but "Documents available from this server may be protected under the U.S. and Foreign Copyright Laws. Permission to reproduce may be required." might be contradictory (although one can argue that "documents" do not encompass images).[6]

As I recall, you had success with PennDoT for Plunketts Creek Bridge No. 3. Communications with PennDCNR to clarify the situation (to get them to refine the copyright statements and disclaimers on the site) or to obtain an OTRS might prove to be a surer way to ensure that no disputes arise for images from the site. Speaking for myself, the "Feel free to download the images we see to promote state parks" is not the same as "feel free to use the images we see in any manner you desire". I would prefer to get them to clarify which parts of their site are in the public domain (the other photos, especially the old ones, could prove to be of great value); so the OTRS or their updating the site would be better. Reminder: creation does not equate publication. Public domain for pre-1923 images refer to images published before 1923, not created before 1923. Jappalang (talk) 21:26, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

As for the DoT OTRS, it depends on how the OTRS was worded. If the ticket specified that only the contents of the brochure are in public domain, then no, you cannot use the ticket for photos not on the brochure. If the ticket specified that any image by the PennDoT is in public domain, then yes, you can use the same ticket (would be good to set up a template on Commons for such a case, like commons:Template:Gary Lee Todd permission).
