Agenda and Notes from Meeting

[edit]

1. Introduction to meet up by organisers (if there are any newbies joining us)

2. Round table for participants to say what you’re working on

  • Jon (talk) added some stuff to Wikidata for the WP: WikiProject New Zealand/New Zealand Women in Architecture WikiProject. NZ Best Design Awards, and its purple, gold and black pins, which are ready for you to attach to people, buildings, etc. Also brushed up the NZIA awards and added the named awards. Added NAWIC (National Association of Women in Construction) but haven't added their annual awards yet.
  • Marshelec has created two new articles for the WP: WikiProject New Zealand/New Zealand Women in Architecture WikiProject. These are for Lucy Greenish and Dorothy Wills who were the first and second women to become Registered Architects in New Zealand (although 20 years apart !). Also created a new article on a local topic: Pariwhero / Red Rocks, although there is scope for further expansion. Marshelec has also been active as a reviewer for Articles for Creation. His AFCR stats since mid-April are: 6 Accepted, 18 Declined. One of the accepted articles is for a Chinese-born New Zealand orchestral conductor Tianyi Lu. Another is the Waiwhetu Aquifer (created by User:Wainuiomartian). It was great to be part of getting these articles published. Other work for WANZ has included development of some policies, and contributions to the 2023-24 General Support Grant application. Currently developing plans for a low key Wikipedia Open Day to be held at Wadestown Library during the forthcoming 1lib1ref campaign.
  • Noracrentiss (talk) More sleuthing to find full names for Contributors to Transactions and Proceedings of the New Zealand Institute where only the contributor's initial is given. Plus through a family contact, got information about the Women + Architecture Editathon published in the newsletter of the Wellington branch of the National Women in Construction Association. Thinking about doing a follow-up item after the Editathon for this newsletter which is always looking for copy.
  • Wainuiomartian (talk) created an article for the Waiwhetu Aquifer, with help from User:Marshelec.
  • Ambrosia10 (talk) 21:23, 12 May 2023 (UTC) has been doing Wellington on a Plate and used the opportunity to give Kristen Kish as new profile image. Have been working on SPNHC2023 presentations. Will be submitting slides for both presentations this weekend. Attended the Te Papa #1Lib1Ref event which was a day full of fun. Have been working on my normal projects of Women Genera - we're still writing papers, and Hidden Figures - where we've just submitted the introduction module for feedback. The ORCID module should be ready for submission next week. Have expanded a couple of moth articles. And have also been doing Wiki gardening, Mix'n'matching, Te Papa botany folk linking etc. Had a meetup with the National Museums Edinburgh geoscience specialist Rachel Walcott to talk scientific minerals and a project she is considering doing.[reply]
  • Einebillion (talk) has attended Te Papa's staff #1Lib1Ref session on 9 May. Really successful day with the Digital Outreach Manager Avocadobabygirl convincing a number of new staff to sign up and give it a go. Four new sign ups. Mordreth007, Amylouedits, Porrhothele, and 3treehouses. About to start working through the about to be published book Through Shaded Glass: Women and Photography in Aotearoa New Zealand 1860-1960 by Lissa Mitchell, Te Papa Press, Wellington, 2023. On the admin front I've been continuing to work on the 2023-26 funding bid to ESEAP].
  • Quilt Phase - taking photos of structures and buildings etc in Wellington and adding to Wikicommons and adding them to Wikidata.
  • Einebillion - admin work for Wikimedia Aotearoa NZ & #1Lib1Ref
  • Gertrude206 - Wikipedia articles, Wikidata and Wikicommons as needed. Tidied up stuff on the World of Wearable Art - biography of new owner, expanded on the building - old Wellington Show Buildings. Article to be written on disambiguating these buildings due to name changes to buildings and organisations. Saw short film about photographer Jos Divis - another bio to write for her.
  • Wainuiomartian working on an aquifer article and has recently published on them and is now looking for another project.
  • Turnagra Tend to focus on Wikipedia, Wikidata a little and wikicommons via Wikishootme - got good article status on Taiari / Chalky Inlet. Blue Smoke article first song recorded in NZ. Half a dozen articles sitting until publishing on Wiki. Update Marine Reserve article needs updating. National Parks need work and is preparing to do this.
  • Sameeenz early stage of Wiki journey - different areas and interests. Cataloguing librarian and excited about Wikidata. Working on getting NZ libraries into Wikidata.
  • Stitchbird2 (talk) 22:20, 12 May 2023 (UTC) - also attended Te Papa's staff #1Lib1Ref session on 9 May, the stats from the highly successful and enjoyable day can be found here: Wikipedia:GLAM/Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa/Workplan. Hopeful that this event will create some momentum at the museum for getting staff involved in wiki work with fortnightly informal lunch meetups scheduled. Have completed several disambiguations of botanical collectors in Te Papa’s database, linking them to wikidata items (creating/editing these where necessary), as well as linking/creating scientific papers & scientific authors in wikidata.[reply]

3. Progress on Action Points and future events

Don't forget to add your program to the Campaign Dashboard. The Dashboard is a key tracking tool for reporting back to Wikimedia Foundation and will help us ensure that we get funding in future years. If you are unsure how to add programs to the Campaign dashboard contact: Ambrosia10 (talk) on her talk page.
  • New Zealand Wikidata Thesis Project aims to get New Zealand dissertations into Wikidata. Project Page, Project Dashboard. There is a google spreadsheet of theses authors with Wikipedia pages who need their theses adding to their page if folk want to work on this during #1Lib1Ref.
New information: Video on how to add thesis to people's pages has been completed.
Project Contacts: DrThneed, Giantflightlessbirds and Ambrosia10

  • Visit to Parliamentary Librarians Any update from Pakoire?

5. Good Article / Featured Article Work Focus article is: Matiu / Somes Island

Progress update? Wainuiomartian has nominated the article for Good Article status. Waiting for it to be looked at.

6. Wiki News - add any news from the wider Wiki movement the group may be unaware of

  • Just letting folk know that the Wellington City Archives have placed about 38,000 images into DigitalNZ. See this news release as well as the Wellington City Archives category in DigitalNZ. If the images aren't in the public domain they are often license CC-BY and they are a great resource for images of Wellington. - Ambrosia10 (talk)
  • The April GLAMwiki newsletter has just been published - see this link. Ambrosia10 particularly liked the information on Oceania GLAM project being undertaken by an editor in the UK as well as the Indonesian structured data marathon event for Indonesian images in Wikicommons. Great idea for a possible event that is something different from the normal writing Wikipedia articles. - Ambrosia10 (talk)

7. Demonstration of a tool

8. Other questions

  • Discussion about why to join the Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand society.
