Unable to come

[edit]
  1. Jon (talk) — Sorry but I will not be attending if we use Zoom, due to philosophical reasons (it installs proprietary software, requires an account, and so on). We could very easily use Jitsi instead, which is open source, peer-to-peer, open standards (WebRTC), anonymous and encrypted, and works in browser tab/window.
I'm seeing some complaints about Jitsi's screen sharing online; it doesn't look quite ready for prime time. I've been having great success with Whereby, which is free, doesn't require an account, and has reasonable screen sharing – but it's proprietary, not open source. —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 10:03, 27 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  1. Gertrude206 Hi. I have a conflict with another Zoom meeting but will try and join if I can. All the best fellow Wikipedians.
  2. Quilt Phase (talk) My apologies, I had all good intentions and then completely forgot!

Agenda

[edit]

At the Feb 15 meeting the attendees discussed what could be improved to make the meetups more effective. The decision was more focus on tools and demonstrations of tools.

  • Introduction to meet up by organisers
  • Discussion and consensus on what videoconferencing platform to use.
  • Round table for participants to say what you’re working on and if you need help with anything – bring along your Wikipedia, Wikidata, or Wikimedia problems
  • Axel and Mike will introduce the Macron Task Force (draft) project to add macrons to NZ place name articles
  • Can anyone help with Draft:Abbie Reynolds? Declined less than 24 hours after creation, but only needs a bit of tweaking.
  • Demo – for those interested in demoing Open Refine or other tools please look at How to Share Your Screen in Zoom
  • Get on with problem solving, editing, and chatting
  • Can anyone help establish notability for G.F._Laundon? Academic or general.

Note: Organisers to update future meetings in the Wikipedia New Zealand event page and Event finder

Outcomes

[edit]
  • Discussion on video conferencing platform by group. Questions about user experience and needing simple ways of people to use. Big Blue Button was another option. Jitsi may have some user experience issues. Outcome Group agreed to trial Jitsi for the next meeting. If that doesn't work to go with Big Blue Button and then if that doesn't work go back to Zoom. Einebillion (talk) Ambrosia10 (talk) will test jitsi midweek and schedule meeting.
  • Vote of thanks for Schwede66 for his work on sorting the New Zealand macron issue.
  • Schwede66 and Giantflightlessbirds have been talking to the New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa (NZGB) about some of the older un-macroned items.
  • Round table discussion on how Covid-19 is affecting lives and contributions to Wikimedia Foundation.
  • Giantflightlessbirds has reviewed Draft:Abbie Reynolds. References are great. May be a problem with tone of the article. May need to be edited to focus on a neutral tone.
  • Giantflightlessbirds shared screen and demoed his recent work with Massey University including a java script tool / hack.
  • Schwede66 shared the macron work plan with the group.
  • The NZ Gazetteer identifier Mix'n'Match dataset that needs work to get these into Wikidata.
    • If creating a new item or filling out a matched item, try and get at least: instance of, country , coordinate location, located in administrative territorial entity [district or region]. Example: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q25661065
    • A lot of localities have been imported into the Māori Wikipedia and have empty Wikidata items
    • Unfortunately the import mangled the macrons(!), e.g. Ahik≈çuka = Ahikōuka, but I think these have been matched manually
  • Discussion about Covid-19 materials for Commons; it was suggested that Commons admin User:Podzemnik may be able to assist with policy guidance.
  • Tidying images from Timaru Botanic Gardens for import into Commons (David Nind)
